EyesTurnGrey formed in the Summer of 2005, consisting of Western Maryland-area musicians, Jonny Malec (vocals, guitar), Max Rowan (bass) and Ed “Ace” Walter (drums). All three members had been and were currently in other bands from the area, were (and still are) friends who hung out regularly and began jamming together, writing improvised songs, initially, all instrumental, and Malec decided to add vocals to the jams as an experiment which stuck.The first EP was recorded within a few months of forming the band as a concentrated project and this would be when audio engineer/producer/dear friend/band-mate, Chris Powers, would take the helm in recording all of EyesTurnGrey’s material from that day forward.“The Proverbial Straw” EP was recorded by Powers at his home studio in 2005 and was released via burning CD-Rs by the band members and given out at shows, as the band had no label support.In late 2006, the “MORTALITY” album was recorded and was a concept record of what the band and friends had been going through, with the loss of friends and relatives, reflected in the lyrical content and overall somber melodies of the songs; one of which being “CLIFTON” about our close friend and band-mate succumbing to leukemia at the age of thirty-six and the instrumental closing track “TERMINUS” being about the passing of Dorothea Malec, of Potawatomi descent, with a tribute to her during and after the song, playing an indigenous tribal rite.All of the members of EyesTurnGrey continue to write, record and perform with their own projects and the reuniting of the band members after a long period of time, along with the publishing of these two recordings, prove that there’s still a fire to keep aflame for music that may have been shelved for a moment in time, but is back with full force and needs to be heard.
