So the “Dump Sub”. Probably our strangest name on the menu! Delicious as it is with our smoked ham, turkey and provolone with lettuce, tomato, red onion and topped off with our homemade Italian dressing… yum…. But the name??? Well this one is named after our Uncle Joseph… Dump as he was called by his brothers and sisters... 5th child of the 8.. we called him Uncle Joe… the story gets quite fuzzy as to where the name Dump came from… I asked some cousins and my mom … there are accounts of dumped girlfriends, a story of diapers ..lol.. but the one I love is that he was cute and chubby like a Dumpling! Some of my favorite childhood memories were big events… weddings, anniversaries where I could sit back and watch Uncle Joe dance! He could jitterbug with the best! If there was swing music playing Uncle Joe was dancing. I found this video of him dancing with my mom ! Didn’t know she could cut a rug like that!!! He also was a really good upholsterer and he had a big old yellow school bus with his upholstery shop in it.. the big sewing machines fascinated me! I remember walking home from school one day and seeing that big old yellow bus and I knew that behind our front door would be laughter and a brown bag of penny candy he would bring for us kids.. Uncle Joe passed the earliest of his siblings .. but I am sure he met each of his family members at the pearly gates with big band music and a dance! Come by and order a Dump! Might make you feel like dancing too!
When we first started forming the whole concept of Marie’s one of the most important menu items to me needed to be the Italian sausage sub ! The sausage had to have the right flavor and that “bite” or “pop” when you bit into it! All you fellow Italians know what I’m talking about! It took quite awhile to find the right sausage… and when we did I knew that sub just had to be “The Augustino” named after Uncle Augustino “Gus” served up with peppers and onions and a cup of marinara on the side!! He was the one who always grilled the sausage… out back beside his pool!! A pool that all his brothers helped build and all us kids learned to swim and dive in! Uncle Gus was ALWAYS entertaining us! Whether he was playing his guitar and singing all kinds of funny songs he made up or playing along with Grandad on his mandolin and Uncle Don on the mouth harp it was always so special! We absolutely loved when he would somehow roll up a handkerchief and turn it into a toy he called a “sudacci” which when I looked in up in google translater it means sweaty.. lol. Maybe because they would wipe their brows with it when they were working??? And he would make it come to life and entertain us kids for hours! That is me in the corner with my cousin Curt and my brother Vince . You are loved and missed Uncle Gus!!
Demolition day! Why hire a crew when you have family that will do all the work?! 😂 Opening day of the new bakery is getting closer and closer!🤩 We will be closed on Monday, July 4th to celebrate our great country 🇺🇸 and also because we have to clean up our mess. We will re-open at 7am Tuesday morning!
