Our Story
Onerent was founded on March 17, 2014 by Greg Toschi, Chuck Hattemer and Rico Mok at Santa Clara University. The founders lost their off-campus housing last minute and found the topic of living was a top-of-mind stress for their peers. Intrigued by the opportunity for a more consistent and fair rental experience, Greg, Chuck and Rico were forced to take action.
Starting Up
The classmates scraped together some of their own money to launch Onerent’s business. They started working out of Rico’s garage and built a technology platform to standardize the leasing process and help University students looking for an off-campus place to rent. In under 6 months, Onerent processed over $1 million in rent and captured 90% of the off-campus student-housing market at Santa Clara University. This served as the launching pad for Onerent.[1][2]
After working with many property managers who used Onerent’s software to house students in their properties, the founders realized how little technology was really being used in the space of residential property management. They found that, using the software they were building and some logistics they could create something that’s location agnostic and simplify the rental experience for both property owners and renters.
