Nasal breathing over mouth breathing is recommended by almost all health providers.There are many benefits of nasal breathing over mouth breathing.
We all know the function of the nose is for breathing and mouth is for chewing/eating.Nasal breathing plays a crucial role for the proper development of upper airways.Mouth breathing can lead to enlarged tonsils and adenoids, bruxism leading to wear and fracture of the teeth, Temperomandibular disorders, dental caries due to a lack of saliva, and malocclusion. The main function of the nose is to filter the air before it goes to lungs, we don’t get this benefit through mouth breathing.We encourage everyone to consult with allergists,ENT doctors, and myofunctional therapists to help with proper nasal breathing!

We often see improper eruption of wisdom teeth which can lead to pocket formation. These pockets becomes the source for the collection of the bad bacteria. This local infection is known as pericoronitis. We prescribe antibiotics for temporary help but it’s not the permanent solution. If you are suffering on and off pain in the wisdom teeth, the ideal solution is the have the affected tooth/teeth removed.

As Dr Minal has spoken about multiple times, our oral health and systemic health are integrated. Poor oral hygiene can lead to poor overall health and poor overall health can lead to poor oral health. For example, diabetic patients are at high risk for gum disease. It is therefore crucial that your dental providers know not only issues you may have with oral health but also any systemic conditions you may have and medications you are taking.

We encourage you to keep your mouth as alkaline as possible and staying away from acidic beverages and foods. If during this holiday season you consume highly acidic food/beverage, rinse with water right after. The outer most layer of tooth is enamel. Acid demineralizes enamel and is a reason behind cavity formation.

As per our tradition, we have shared our holiday tip for today from our hygienists and Dr. Minal.

Toothbrushes are not able to reach in between teeth so you need to use dental floss, pre-threaded flossers, interdental brushes, soft picks, powered air/water flossers, or wooden plaque removers. The process of cleaning in between teeth helps get rid of food particles and prevent plaque formation to maintain good gums and teeth health.
