It’s hump day again, and this time you might be surprised by our recommendation…

Dancing.

That’s right – it doesn’t always have to be all work, no play.

So tonight, or right now, grab your partner, or grab yourself, throw on some tunes and throw down because, believe it or not, dancing is one surefire way to get your heart rate pumping!

It’s no secret – exercising regularly, especially if you’re just getting started, can be scary for some people.

We’ve learned over the years that forming good habits is about forming good micro-habits.

Maybe you want to lose 20 pounds before summer starts and only have two months to do so. That’s a big goal, and frightening because it’s so big.

Think instead about the very first step you have to take to get there – maybe it’s sitting outside the gym for 5 minutes, maybe it’s just walking through the door with the promise that you’ll return the following morning.

Moving gradually toward your goal will improve your confidence, because little steps are easier to accomplish than giant leaps.

Happy hump day, everyone! Which means it’s time for our Wednesday Workout. Today we’re featuring a variation of the traditional push-up, called the ‘Sphinx’.

This type of push up is meant to focus on the triceps, while also strengthening the upper body and core.

Here’s how to do it:

Start in a plank position, with your forearms flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart and parallel.
Push up with your triceps to lift your elbows off the ground.
Continue until your arms are fully extended, then lower your elbows until just above the ground, without putting the weight back on your forearms, for one repetition.
Rinse and repeat.

Note: the further forward you place your arms, the more difficult the exercise will be.
Let us know how much it burns in the comments below 😀!

What’s the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise?

Aerobic simply means ‘with air’ and anaerobic means ‘without air’.

Without getting too technical, aerobic exercises are exercises performed at less intensity, and for a duration that exceeds 2 minutes, such as jogging or swimming.

Anaerobic exercises, on the other hand, are exercises performed at high intensity, for short intervals – energy is exerted faster, and airways are stifled. Sprinting is a perfect example.

A balanced cardiovascular exercise program will blend both aerobic and anaerobic training for maximum lung and heart health and performance.

Let us know: what’s your favorite form of cardio?🤔

If you stop working out, will muscle turn to fat?
No, not really – you may get fat, but not because your muscle has BECOME fat.

This is not possible, because fat and muscle are two completely separate tissues.

In other words, when you stop strength training, your metabolism slows down, which means your body is burning fewer calories at rest.

Muscle recedes, and fat appears.

Of course, you know how to set the cycle back in reverse ;)

You may be wondering:

What’s a healthy body weight for me?

Everybody is different, and various factors play a role in determining each person’s ideal weight.

These factors can be biological, such as age, height, and natal s*x, but mental factors can be just as important.

An individual may define their ideal weight as the one with which they feel the most comfortable.

However, maintaining a moderate weight can reduce a person’s risk of developing a number of health conditions, including:

obesity
type 2 diabetes
high blood pressure
cardiovascular disease (CVD)

You can use this free tool to calculate your optimal body mass index:

Wednesday workout, here we go!

You may have heard of the deadlift – in fact, if you maintain any kind of weight routine, the deadlift certainly has a spot in your line-up.

But have you heard of the Romanian deadlift?

Unlike its counterpart, the Romanian deadlift emphasizes the hamstrings more than any other muscle, and strong hamstrings are the key to effective barbell squats.

Here’s how you do it:

Stand with the bar or weight in your hands as opposed to the floor.

Slowly lower the weight with a slight bend in your knees, bending at the hips and keeping your back straight.

Lower until you feel a slight stretch in your hamstrings – usually when the weight has just passed your knees – then drive your hips forward and use your hamstrings to power back up to standing.

Pro tip:

Maintain your back position, but don’t feel like the weight needs to touch the ground – remember, the emphasis here is not on your lower back, but on your hamstrings :)

Boxing is about graceful movement, timing, pacing, control, and power.

Watch your opponent, anticipate where he is going to be, defend your weakness before he finds it.

Find your opportunity, seize it, and don’t let up.

Nobody knew this better than this guy right here (we dare you to disagree!)...

The bilateral squat is of course the most common, but have you ever tried the one-legged squat?

First conceived by pirates (kidding) the one-legged squat is identical to the bilateral squat, except you’re balancing your weight on one leg.
This exercise is great for locating and maintaining your center of gravity while you exercise, though we recommend trying this exercise without weights first :)

Curious about Yoga, but worried that you may not be flexible enough?

Here’s a perfect beginner pose to help get you started.

The Mountain Pose:

1) Stand with your big toes barely touching, and your heels slightly apart.
2) Press into all four corners of your feet: big toe, little toe, right side heel, left side heel. As you push into your feet, feel how that engages your entire leg and keeps those muscles active.
3) Take a deep breath and roll your shoulders up and back, releasing them down, so your shoulder blades are resting toward each other and your neck is long.
4) Take a few deep breaths here, and close your eyes if you like ;)

Let us know below how this one makes you feel!

Ah, what to eat, if at all, before a workout!

If 30-60 minutes before a workout, we recommend a lighter snack, high in carbohydrates and protein.

If 2-3 hours before a workout, we recommend a light meal, also high in carbohydrates and protein.

This is where your energy and fuel will come from! Here are some of our favorites:

Fruit smoothies.
Yogurt parfaits with granola and fruit.
Bananas.
Oats.
Whole grain bread with a couple of slices of lean meat.
Chicken with rice and vegetables.
Apples with peanut butter and raisins.
Greek yogurt.

Nutritious and delicious!

Have you heard of the Irish champ who fell from grace only to rise again from the ashes?

His name is Tyson Fury.

Many years ago, he was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. He had everything a man could want: money, cars, a beautiful wife and family.

But what he didn’t have was peace of mind – inside, he battled depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and addiction.

He struggled for years – everyone in the boxing world had ruled him out, had said he was done-for and was never coming back.

But one day, when partying with kids half his age, he had an epiphany – he vowed to himself and to his family that this time he would change his ways.

And he did. He trained hard, every day, shed the excess weight he had gained, and overcame the demons in his mind that had held him back from glory.

On February 22, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Tyson Fury knocked out Deontay Wilder to become the heavyweight champion of the world – for the second time.

If you haven’t started down your path to glory yet, it’s never too late to start. If you’re struggling to get back to where you started, there’s always hope, a path waiting for you to take it.
