😔Limited access to veterinary care can have tragic consequences not just for pet owners who consider their companions family members. Telling clients you can’t help them because they have no money is as emotionally taxing for veterinary teams.
Our recent Burnout Study highlights the link between burnout and economic euthanasia in the veterinary profession. While economic euthanasia can’t be eradicated completely, there is a number of steps veterinary practices can take to reduce the frequency of this procedure and the mental toll it takes on their team:
📌Expand payment options in your hospital. This could include third-party payment plans, pet insurance, and collaboration with charitable organizations.
📌Consider training staff on coping mechanisms for moral dilemmas, and coaching with an emphasis on emotional and psychological wellness topics.
📌Hold proactive financial discussions with clients. Promote preventive care and offer pet-specific screenings for early detection of diseases.

👩⚕️Are hybrid work arrangements a viable option for veterinary teams?
Galaxy Vets recently conducted our Third Annual Burnout Study to gain insights into the work preferences that veterinary professionals find most appealing and to explore opportunities for providing more work-life balance.
The study results demonstrate that staff members in all roles would benefit from hybrid work arrangements and having an option to work from home to complete administrative tasks, a flexible schedule to accommodate childcare, and a better work-life balance to improve mental health.

😓Have you ever felt emotionally drained after dealing with your clients’ stress and frustration? If so, you may have experienced what's commonly known as "compassion fatigue."
In the new episode of the "Consolidate That" podcast, we talk with Sarah Dalton, a Client Care Coordinator at Danville Family Vet, about her recent essay on compassion fatigue in the profession and the emotional struggles veterinary teams experience.
Sarah Dalton joins Ryan Leech and Dr. Ivan Zak to discuss the behind-the-scenes work that veterinary professionals do and the critical importance of self-care, support groups, and client education in preventing and managing compassion fatigue.
💬"When clients come in, they put all their trust into us, and it's up to us to keep that trust. And that can be a lot because compassion fatigue is just about giving all you can and not having anything left to give," Sarah says.

💥Today, we want to give a big shout-out to our Director of Non-Profit Initiatives, the one and only Dr. Andrew Ciccolini!
Non-profit work is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. It takes someone who is passionate, motivated, and a true leader to make things happen. And that's precisely what we see in Dr. Andrew!
🙌🏻Under his leadership, the Galaxy Vets Foundation team has accomplished A LOT. Over the past year, we have fostered a fantastic community of about 300 veterinarian and nurse volunteers worldwide. We’ve responded to over 30,000 requests from pet owners from Ukraine and helped them get the virtual veterinary care they need and financially supported dozens of shelters and animal welfare organizations in that war-torn country.
So, if you're interested in starting your non-profit organization, volunteering your time and skills, or learning more about non-profit work, Dr. Andrew's experience and wisdom can offer some valuable insights and inspiration!

Are you looking for ways to promote flexibility in your workplace? Our Vice President of Field Operations, Steve Kemph, has some great tips to share👇🏻
1️⃣Allow your doctors and their support teams to have a dedicated one-hour quiet time block midday or mid-afternoon. This time allows them to make client callbacks, catch up on medical charting, and treat pet drop-offs. It also helps technicians catch up on tasks like preparing surgical packs, charting, and cleaning.
2️⃣Have a daily 10-minute lunchtime burst meeting for each hospital branch to report on the current status of their work and what changes are needed for the rest of the day. This gives your hospital the flexibility to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

🤔What are the benefits of partnering with Galaxy Vets and becoming employee-owned?
Nobody can answer this question better than our co-owners! Meet Dr. Jeff Smith, medical director and a leader of Danville Family Vet, in the new "Consolidate That" podcast episode!
Dr. Jeff joins Ryan Leech and Dr. Ivan Zak to discuss his experience and challenges being a small-town vet and how joining Galaxy Vets help unleash the hospital’s growth potential!
💬”A lot of us are 1-, 2-, 3-doctor practices in small towns. My HR, my marketing, my inventory management, my leadership training is something that I do after 6 p.m. or before I go to bed. Technological changes are happening so rapidly, you can’t keep up with them, and what I need is a partner with all those resources that can help me. What if I had a professional HR team and a professional marketing team? A computerized inventory management system like the one Galaxy has implemented here? Just within a month, we had our inventory slashed to a fourth of what it was; it’s almost like an ondemand system now. It’s just amazing what you can do with a proper team. It allows me to focus on patient care. It makes us better," says Dr. Jeff.
We are so thrilled to work with the Danville crew and achieve our goals together!❤️

🤔Thinking about selling your veterinary hospital? You definitely want to learn more about what potential buyers look for when they purchase a practice and what M&A strategies are out there!
We’ve got just the resource for you. Tune into the conversation between Jeffrey Feldberg and Emmitt Nantz, COO at Galaxy Vets, in the new episode of “The Deep Wealth" podcast at https://bit.ly/3LsplAX
In this episode, Emmitt and Jeffrey discuss how Galaxy Vets’ employee stock ownership plan works, which aspects of it benefit practice owners and their teams, what may make a potential buyer walk away, and how to optimize your practice’s EBITDA and P&L before talking to a buyer.
💬"Specific to Galaxy, that's a couple of key opportunities. One, I'll look at people, I'll start with people. If you have a team that you've pulled together this, this talks to the culture piece. But if you've got a team that's engaged, they're curious, they problem-solve, and they want personal development and growth – that's really exciting to a potential buyer, that's an opportunity to leverage the talent that you've acquired to expand the entire enterprise," Emmitt says.

They highlight the importance of trust and alignment between executive teams and private equity firms and the business growth challenges that practice owners face.
💬"If the executive team doesn't introduce things that are accepted with trust and if there's no trust in the executive team, I think that's where it all breaks apart," Dr. Ivan Zak says.

Burnout rates have returned to pre-pandemic levels after a significant spike in 2021, potentially due to COVID-19-related complications.
Our recent Burnout Study shows that work exhaustion has decreased over the past year, while job satisfaction has risen to the level of pre-2020. However, there are some critical findings to note:
📌Practice managers were the only group whose burnout rate increased and remained high
📌There was no significant difference in burnout rates between privately-owned and corporate practices or different practice categories (small animal, large animal, equine, etc.)
📌The lowest burnout rates were among relief workers and practice owners
As we continue to prioritize the well-being of our veterinary teams, let's keep an eye on those who may need extra support.

🤓Have you heard about EBITDA?
EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. This measure shows a more realistic number for the buyer as it excludes owner benefits, rent, and other factors that have nothing to do with the actual profit of the practice.
To get the highest purchase price for your business, you need to strive to improve the value of your EBITDA since buyers are willing to pay more for clinics with substantial revenue!
