The Air Force needed a small plane to move the President on short trips, so they chose this aircraft.

COMING TO GREENVILLE MAJORS AIRPORT...

The Barnstormer Saturday warbirds are coming to Greenville. These historic aircraft will be on display for one day only in Greenville.
Get up close. Watch and listen as they start, belch smoke, and rumble down the runway.
The event features several historic aircraft, including a former AIR FORCE ONE. You will see planes from World War II and the early 1950's. The pictures show the actual planes scheduled to attend.

Ever wonder what it's like in the cockpit? Follow Ike's Bird pilot, Al Benzing, as he goes through the checklists and flies the Aero Commander L-26B. Al will explain what he doing, and you'll hear all cockpit conversations and radio calls. Thanks to Erik Johnston for producing this video.
The air show announcer telling the crowd about the departure of Air Force One. He got a little mixed up when recalling the story of Pres. Truman signing the Order creating the Air Force in 1947. He called the plane, “Scare Crow”, then corrected to “Scare Cow”.
Actually the plane was nicknamed the “Sacred Cow”. It was built as a Douglas DC-4 and modified for military use. It was first used by Pres. Roosevelt during WWII. Among the modifications was the addition of an elevator in the tail area to lift the wheelchair bound President in and out of the plane.
Pres. Truman used the “Sacred Cow” for a number of years before upgrading to a DC-6 variant, called the “Independence”.
How often have you been to an airshow that features Air Force One? Here she is on takeoff today from Andrew’s AFB. The President left this morning to fly to London for the Queen’s funeral. The timing just happened to work out, as the takeoff occurred during the Andrews Air & Space Expo.

Meet Col. Matt Jones (left). He is the commander of the 89th Special Air Missions Wing. This group provides executive transport and airlift for our nation’s top executives…. Including Air Force One.
When the President lands or departs at Andrews AFB it is Col. Jones who escorts the President to and from the plane. He stopped by to see Ike’s Bird today and hear a little about the history of 1950’s Presidential transport. Gerald Oliver, CAF volunteer is on the right.
Thanks to Col. Jones and his team for their great hospitality to Ike’s Bird and crew this weekend.

Undersecretary of the Air Force visits Ike’s Bird. The honorable Gina Ortiz Jones is accompanied by MSgt Antonio Lofton and the USAF Honor Guard. The meeting took place in Hangar Two at Andrews AFB in Washington DC.

Ike’s Bird is now in Hangar Two at Andrews AFB. The Air Force is building a display next to the plane that shows the history of Andrews. Will get more pics for you as the weekend progresses.
Next to us is the C-47 “That’s All Brother”. The display next to them is all about the 75 years of Air Force history.
Just outside are 120 military planes, including the USAF Thunderbirds.
IKE’S BIRD IS BACK IN WASHINGTON. DC...
This video shows the plane taxiing onto the ramp at Andrews AFB today. It’s the first time this former White House aircraft has been back to its former home outside DC. We were invited by members of the current Presidential Air Force unit to bring the plane to this year’s big 75th Anniversary celebration of the USAF at Andrews. Watch for more updates here as the weekend develops.
