A common myth is that healthy foods won't raise blood sugars. A healthy food is one that provides your body with the macros and nutrients it needs. When we are discussing "healthy" foods, we always need to qualify it. Many foods that are considered "healthy" are not necessarily a great choice for someone who is a diabetic struggling to keep their blood sugars in range. Context always matters.

Non scale victories are more quickly apparent and easier to see then the weight on the scale.
Body weight is variable throughout the day and can fluctuate. It is important to recognize non-scale successes as they happen.
Teaching our children is the key ingredient to helping them live healthy lives. We need to teach them about food. We need to teach them how to cook so they can make healthy food and can rely on themselves!
These were gone so fast and I didn’t get an after picture. They were so yummy!

My 4 year old picky eater found the shopping ads today and decided to circle all the foods she thought I should buy that she is willing to eat.
She chose a mix of fruits, vegetables and even Sushi 🍣!
She also chose Soda, Oreos and Ice Cream because she is a kid with human taste buds and those things taste good.
It is absolutely okay that she likes those treats and eats them when given to her.
My job as her parent is to limit how many high sugar/dessert foods she eats and by increasing her high nutrient foods such as fruits & vegetables. I do this by filling my kitchen with high nutrient food and making sure that she has at least one healthy choice at each meal that she is willing to eat and …not purchasing the other foods.
It is really tricky with a picky eater but worth the effort!
Our kids pay close attention to what we do. We don’t talk about how healthy it makes us to go to the gym and lift weights around our house but my husband and I get up early and make it a priority to hit the gym and lift weights regularly. My son brought this home from preschool last week. I just absolutely loved it!
Our kids are watching and learning from us. Let’s set good examples for them to emulate!

Making nutritious food choices for ourselves benefits generations.
The most influential way we can benefit our children's health is by making good choices for ourselves. Children are remarkable mimickers and will follow our lead. This is termed 'modeling' and it is the most effective way to teach our children.
Cooking at home is the first step to a healthy lifestyle for ourselves and our children. Creating a mealtime environment benefits the family in more than just healthy eating. You want to set aside specific times during the day where you sit down as a family. Make the time consistent and intentional. Try and avoid distractions during the meals so the focus in on eating and family time.

Including your kids in the planning and preparing of meals has many benefits!
1- Learning to cook is a life skill that will benefit them forever
2 - kids are much more willing to try food when they have helped prepare it.
3 - I have found it provides a nice opportunity for one on one time with my children.
4 - getting to have a say when why gets served for meals helps them feel like their opinions are heard.
5 - it’s so nice not to have to decide what’s for dinner EVERY night!
My kids all got cookbooks for Christmas last year from . We have loved them. My 7 year old picked these meatballs for her meal and the recipe was simple enough she could do almost the entire thing on her own - including making homemade sauce!
Side note: an easy way to adjust a meal like this for your macros if you don’t have enough carbs for as much pasta as you want is to cook up some zucchini noodles and mix your pasta noodles with the zoodles!
This month we will be focusing on having a healthy family. It can be difficult to create healthy habits when you have kids. They not only make your life very busy but can be picky eaters and resistant to change.
I had a friend once tell me that she wanted to eat healthier and change her lifestyle but she was being met with so much resistance from her kids. They were used to eating out most nights for dinner and would complain when she tried to serve them home cooked meals. She eventually decided to throw in the towel and give up. We don't want that to be you!
Stay tuned for ways to get your kids involved in eating healthier and being more active! If the whole family is excited about the changes you are making you are much more likely to be successful!
