The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey: A Novel by Walter Mosley

Ptolemy Grey is ninety-one years old and has been all but forgotten-by his family, his friends, even himself-as he sinks into a lonely dementia. His grand-nephew, Ptolemy's only connection to the outside world, was recently killed in a drive-by shooting, and Ptolemy is too suspicious of anyone else to allow them into his life until he meets Robyn, his niece's seventeen-year-old lodger and the only one willing to take care of an old man at his grandnephew's funeral.

But Robyn will not tolerate Ptolemy's hermit-like existence. She challenges him to interact more with the world around him, and he grasps more firmly onto his disappearing consciousness. However, this new activity pushes Ptolemy into the fold of a doctor touting an experimental drug that guarantees Ptolemy won't live to see age ninety- two but that he'll spend his last days in feverish vigor and clarity. With his mind clear, what Ptolemy finds-in his own past, in his own apartment, and in the circumstances surrounding his grand-nephew's death-is shocking enough to spur an old man to action, and to ensure a legacy that no one will forget.

Title: Sulwe
Author: Lupita Nyongo'o
Illustrator: Vashti Harrison
Age: 4-8 yrs

Synopsis: From Academy Award–winning actress Lupita Nyong’o comes a powerful, moving picture book about colorism, self-esteem, and learning that true beauty comes from within. Sulwe has skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.

Recommendation: It is never too early to learn self-worth and self-appreciation. The story also demonstrates how lovingly Sulwe’s mother shows sensitivity to how Sulwe feels. She then helps her to see that beauty is not only on the outside but inside as well.

Title: CROWN: An Ode to the Fresh Cut
Author Derrick Barnes
Illustrator Gordon C. James.

Age Level: 3-8 years

Brief Synopsis: Derrick Barnes’ first picture book is a poem describing a boy's feelings and inner thoughts while getting a haircut. The barbershop is where the transformation begins. It illustrates the self-esteem, confidence and pride boys feel when they leave the chair of the barber. It is a tradition that places on their heads a “figurative crown, beaming with jewels, that confirms their brilliance and worth.” It helps them to love and accept themselves.

Recommendation:

This 28-page picture book is a good read along for your young one. It is a fun way to introduce the “not so sure” about the barbershop and what it means. You can also bond with your child about their experience as compared to what is described in the book. You can also share in the art in the book as the illustrator brings out the details and character of the barbershop patrons.
