True crime show shoots....dramatic, yes....pleasant topic, no! Loop
Spent the week on a second round of interviews for a pretty heavy documentary...this time in Northern Virginia. Been doing a lot of travelling work this year!
Shooting on the tip top of Dallas today.
We recently produced this short promo for an Olympic hopeful in Dressage. Sara Sasso-Toolin is an immigrant to the U.S. and built her equestrian business (ForteBellaEquestrian.com) from the ground up before aspiring to the gold medal. God Speed, Sara! https://vimeo.com/869626262

Shooting for a brand you know overlooking Frisco's "$5 Billion Mile!"
Successfully wrapped a 10 day shoot in New York then returned to Dallas to be punched in the face by 115 degree heat indexes! Fortunately there's also a 10 day job in Seattle starting July 8th...maybe I'll just hang out there until October 😛
This reel is longer than most but addresses a common criticism I've seen for steadicam work. While the "six seconds" presented in most reels might be great, the shot lasted far longer and maintaining an excellent shot for an extended period is the hallmark of a talented steadicam operator. Feel free to click through for brevity😉

The flip side to the usual corporate video work I do is the occasional foray into narrative film and television projects. Here is the latest demo reel of some from the past few years!

It's hard to believe 2 1/2 years has passed since our last corporate demo reel but we've had a chance to shoot some beautiful projects in that time!
Spent a steamy day partnering with Haaksman Media to film an on-location segment for Science Channel's "Mysteries of the Abandoned" series in Pine Bluff, Arkansas alongside former owner Kathy Majewska. The Saenger Theater was a marvel of it's time when it opened in 1924 but was eventually replaced by the suburban shopping mall cinema. It'll be a tough sell to get it restored but at least we were able to save it's story!
Worked with Loaded Sky productions on an interview with Patricia Puckett, granddaughter of the boarding house owners https://www.facebook.com/OswaldRoomingHouseDallasTx that Lee Harvey Oswald rented a room from in 1963. She had a lot of personal recollections...this was a fascinating historical recording.
Spent another day in "Jerry's House of Football Woe" last weekend but this time for a Nerf gun battle. This is the 7th year running and they sold 4000 tickets...that's 4000 kids shooting it out this evening. We followed the organizer, Jared, around reality style and I was amazed at what a heart he has for bringing smiles to kids faces with this event. Barely makes a dime but is incredibly committed. Everyone in the ticket line wanted to take pics with him. Who knew this happened at AT&T Stadium?!
When the client said they had a jet for the shoot they weren't kidding. This wasn't your dad's Cessna 172!
A breathtaking view from the 55th floor today in Austin. Thanks to my old friend Kenny Hada for taking care of sound. He got the guy with the hammer drill on the 54th floor to stop long enough to shoot the interview 😆
Today marks 10 years in business for RL Films! Thank you to all past clients and and crew. The shoot today put us in a suite with a superb view of Reunion Tower and the Margret McDermott Bridge. Too bad they wanted a green screen 😄. Great to work with Jay Prichard on teleprompter again!
Podcasting for a tech conference at the Hyatt Regency...got the "downtown view" side of the hotel! Thanks to Michael Gerrard for the assist.
Some days you just get "THAT" interview location! Top of the Plaza of the Americas in downtown Dallas.
Interviews of experts for a Science Channel show. As a one-man-band it's a lot of work to set up but then you get to hit record and let the producers carry the load on Zoom:-) Best part is I like these kind of docu-mysteries so the day was anything but boring.
And there was another camera right behind me! Shooting for an upcoming MTV show this week...so you can be sure the subject matter is NOT music :-)
This was a little comedy gem I shot for writer/director/actor Wendy Pennington-Smith early last year. Got everything in the can in one day! It's a fun watch and at only 7 minutes. Glad to see it's done well on the festival circuit and appeared recently on PBS! Special shout out to my 1st AC, Adam Field.
"F NEWS" short film, satire, nominated for best comedy, best short and best actor A short film, satire, about a teenage boy fed up with fake news and conspiracies so he invents a device that can, "change the world."
In reviewing admin stuff beginning the year I realized I never post anything. Kinda rude to the 400 of y'all that have liked the page so I promise to do better moving forward! 2021 was a great year with a couple more short films shot, several new (and repeating) clients, and lots and lots of freelance work. The Texas history documentary, http://OnThisSite.TV, that we've been working on for several years stalled with the coming of COVID and we haven't been able to get it back on track with that particular network. Bummer as they actually had sponsors lined up for us. But it appears they've changed the focus of their programming so we'll keep trying elsewhere. Looking forward to another banner year and we hope it's that way for y'all, too!
Greenscreen or chromakey is a great tool to enhance the visuals of your video. But beware the pitfalls of allowing reflected light to ruin your image!
Don't Spill That: Controlling color spill from your greenscreen | by Tom More | LinkedIn Published: February 25, 2021. Recently a client contacted us needing help improving his home studio set up for Zoom calls. We met on Zoom with him in front of his green screen in a seated, one third-body shot.
If you're Zooming or podcasting you might be surprised to hear the quality of your audio is more important than that of your video...but it IS. I wrote this article to assist in getting the most out of your audio set up.
Do You Hear What I Hear?: Quality Audio For Your Streaming Videos When we think of video presentations we tend to prioritize the visual elements. I mean, “video” is right in the name.
We're all using video conferencing more and more. Here are some tips to use light to enhance your natural beauty:-)
Zooming right with flattering light! With virus concerns limiting face-to-face meetings more businesses and professionals have turned to video chat services such as Zoom or to video calls via cell phone. While this is a great alternative to being there it comes with some unconscious expectations from the viewer.
A sample of our most recent work for business clients and an example of how we use a video image to make a lasting impression.
I'm happy to say "Pandemic Mode" has given RL Films the chance to up our media game with a new website and sizzle reels, so please take a look and let us know what you think. Even more exciting news: Many of you know my wife Jennifer, who has been a part of the business in the background as writer, leader, organizer, and collaborator on several video projects already, but we've made the jump to a professional partnership making RL Films our official Family Business! She's a perfect fit for our expanded services and far easier on the eyes in an interview than I am;-) It is said two is stronger than one - and then there's that strand of three cords....:-) We are excited about how much more we can accomplish together for clients! I'm very proud to announce our Texas history show, "On This Site," pilot episode on legendary trail driver Oliver Loving was one of four finalists in the "short documentary" category at this past weekend's Lake Travis Film Festival! We didn't win the trophy but with a showing like that for our first effort I think this show has a real future:-) Thanks to fellow producers Jennifer Varela Jodziewicz, and Lance Eakright, the man who gave me the idea Bob Fraley, and special thanks to Devin Connelly of Ethos Media for introducing me to festival organizer Kat Albert at a Dallas Producer's Association event! Things do happen for a reason. http://OnThisSite.TV
