Kermit Lynch: The views from Saint Romain looking down on the Côte de Beaune are striking, as is the sight of the local terroir with its steep, winding vineyards and extremely rocky soils. The higher elevation and higher limestone content give this blanc a lively, bright initial punch, floral aromatics, and a round, opulent finish. The estate’s history runs deep in Saint Romain, which is the native village of the Taupenot side of the family, with these old vines being part of the family holdings for generations.

Jeb Dunnuck 94: The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is smoking good, with a full-bodied, rich, opulent wine that has classic cassis and darker blue fruits as well as leafy to***co, baking spice, and bouquet garni notes. This textured, ripe, sexy wine stays nicely balanced, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another awesome value.
James Suckling 94: Dark berries, cedar, walnuts, sweet spices and pencil shavings on the nose. Full-bodied and so polished and linear, with a chalky texture to the tannins. Wide and layered. Beautiful fruit. Lingering and refined.

Wine Advocate 96: The 2022 Albariño Cepas Vellas feels quite reductive and difficult to read on the nose. It took time to open up, but the palate showed the depth, balance and clout of the wine from minute one. Vinous 92: The 2021 Chianti Classico Ama is outrageously beautiful. Rich and sensual, with tremendous depth, the Ama shows just how important the vintage is. Readers who want to explore the house style will find a gorgeous wine with which to do that. Dark fruit, leather, spice, to***co and menthol build in a sumptuous layered Chianti Classico that hits all the right notes. Bright acids and vibrant floral accents round out the finish. Superb.

Vinous 94: The 2020 Sancerre Generation XIX is seductive with its round, full body caressing the palate. It offers pure fruit that’s redolent of pineapple as well as florals. At 14.5% alcohol and with 10 months on lees, there’s plenty of weight. While the alcohol is a bit higher than I’d like, this is still an impressive and ambitious style.

The comparison of wines from the Willamette Valley to those from Burgundy is a classic one. The cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are produced by 00 Wines (Double Zero) from Chris Hermann beautifully showcase this idea in every bottling. Using techniques learned from some of the greatest producers in Burgundy, Chris has set a standard in Oregon for Old-World style wines that are as approachable as they are singular.

“I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It’s never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with “a Grenache lover’s dream.” This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years.”

We can’t believe February is already here! This is what we got going on to kick off the new month!

2015 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata
One of the most prominent and historical producers in Piemonte, the wines of Paolo Scavino never disappoint. Family owned since 1921, each vineyard is meant to show the uniqueness of terroir in Barolo and the vast versatility of the Nebbiolo grape. The wine from the Rocche dell’Annunziata vineyard is indicative of the Scavino style and prove to be some of the most sought-after Barolos with each vintage.
The “grand cru” of the La Morra village in the Barolo appellation, Rocche dell’Annunziata sits on a south facing slope with exposure to the sun throughout the day. Recognized as one of the most complex and elegant vineyards of the winery, the wines produced show silky tannins and delicate fruit with underlying notes of leather and to***co. The 2015 Riserva is ready to drink now, but can age beautifully for years to come.
