Won't file your personal, company's or tax exempt organizations's taxes in time? Avoid a penalty by considering an extension! Failing to file your 990 (or filing late) has some pretty steep consequences. These penalties can include:
- $20 late fee per day after the deadline, up to a total of $10,000 or up to 5% of your total gross receipts.
- Larger nonprofits (with annual receipts greater than $1,000,000) can suffer even greater fines: $100 per day.
- And if you fail to file your 990 three years in a row, you may lose your tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) status.
File an extension using one of the following forms:
- IRS Form 7004:https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f7004.pdf
- IRS Form 4868:https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf
- IRS Form 8868 (for tax-exempt organizations): https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8868.pdf
Note: An IRS Tax Extension extends the amount of time to File a Tax Return. It does not Extend the amount of time to Pay any Taxes Due. The IRS will still expect the tax payment on the traditional deadline. However, the IRS Penalties for a Failure to Pay are significantly lower than the penalties for a Failure to File. So, if you are short on cash, it is better to pay what you can & file the Tax Extension before the deadline.
Nonprofits, are you ready for tax season? Exempt organizations with a filing obligation must submit the appropriate version of Form 990 (or file an extension request) by the 15th day of the fifth month following the close of their tax year. Therefore, if your organization's fiscal year ended on 11/30/2023, the deadline for you to file is Midnight EST on TODAY!
If you aren't ready and need to file an extension, use Form 8868PDF to request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-PF by visitinghttps://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8868.pdf
