A Diffuse Traumatic Brain Injury usually refers to a Diffuse Axonal Injury which is a component of traumatic brain injury. This occurs when there is stretching, twisting and sheering of neurons in specific areas that causes widespread damage.
A Traumatic Brain Injury can occur anytime there is rapid movement of the head as the brain moves and stretches causing diffuse or local damage to the neurons.

The official diagnosis criteria of a DAI or Diffuse Axonal Injury is if the individual goes into a coma within 6 hours of a head injury. However, recent research may change this criteria in the future.
