DART Announces Next Phase of Service Enhancements, Most Will Be Effective September 16, 2024
Rail passengers will see increased service frequency on the weekends to mirror increased usage- starting on September 28
Recent ridership data from Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) shows continued increases toward pre-pandemic levels, with ridership at approximately 80% of pre pandemic levels to end the last quarter. This upward trend is marked by changes in rider behavior including more frequent weekend ridership. Customer feedback encouraged increased service frequency, and DART will deliver on this concept via the latest service changes; most of these will launch on September 16. These updates will include rail weekend schedule frequency improvement, bus service optimization, and reassignments of bus bays.
Rail Schedule Frequency Improvement:
Weekend riders on all of DART’s rail lines including Red, Green, Blue, and Orange will experience increased service frequency, with trains running every 20 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays between 6 AM and 10 PM. This is an increase in service from the current schedule. Weekend service outside of these hours will remain at a 30-minute frequency. Passengers should note this service change will be implemented on September 28 to coincide with the start of the State Fair of Texas.
“The way our passengers utilize DART is evolving,” said Dee Leggett, DART’s Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “Weekend ridership continues to grow – exceeding pre-pandemic ridership levels. This means our passengers are utilizing the system to reach more entertainment destinations and getting more out of DART throughout the week. This will be especially true as we enter State Fair of Texas season! This service change features increased rail frequency during peak hours on the weekend launching on September 28th. We are excited to fulfill this long-standing request for increased service from our passengers, and this increased service frequency will carry on after the Fair concludes.”
Bus Service Improvements:
Route 222: This route, serving the Southwestern Medical District, Brookhollow, and Regal Row will be discontinued and replaced by the extension of an existing route, Route 207 and the creation of a new route, Route 122.
Route 207: The expansion of this route northwestward will reconnect the Lemmon Ave. corridor with jobs and other commercial destinations in the Regal Row area, such as the Family Place, the new Salvation Army Headquarters, Dallas County Elections Headquarters, the Thurston corridor, and the Inwood/Love Field Station.
Route 122: This new route will serve the remaining segments of current Route 222 as a loop originating and ending at Southwestern Medical District/Parkland Station with an improved 30-minute midday frequency. It will focus on Arlington Park and Brookriver, including service to Empire Central and the Mexican Consulate in Brookhollow. Unlike Route 222, this route will not serve Inwood/Love Field Station – that area will be served by route 207.
Route 22: Travel between Forest Lane Station and Forest/Jupiter Station will now have 10-minute service intervals on weekdays to help support this heavily traveled portion of the route. The remainder of the route will continue to have 15–20-minute service intervals in the area that connects Addison Transit Center with Downtown Garland Station.
Route 17: Buses will now use SMU Boulevard and Worcola for improved access to SMU/Mockingbird station from Greenville Avenue.
Express Route 308: A new 2 PM trip will be added, departing from Cedars Station to supplement trips added to this schedule in June.
Routes 9 and 47: Will now observe a new Dallas timepoint, moving from Elm & Griffin to EBJ Union Station.
Routes 28, 214, 224, and 233: Minor schedule changes will be implemented to enhance on-time performance.
Forest Lane, Inwood Love Field, Spring Valley, SWMD/Parkland Station will have new bus bay boarding locations, customers should follow the signage at each location.
These updates are part of DART’s ongoing efforts to improve the frequency, accessibility, efficiency and reliability of our transit services.

Service Change Beginning on Monday, September 16th DART will introduce a host of service changes designed with convenience and connectivity in mind. Watch for details within a few weeks on DART.org, printed brochures, and social media.
Over the past 40 years, DART has connected millions across North Texas to jobs, education, healthcare, and entertainment. Today, we run a 700-square-mile network with buses, light rail, regional rail, microtransit, and paratransit. Our $17 billion in station-related development is just the start.
North Texas is set to become the 3rd largest U.S. region in a decade, with millions more people and jobs. DART's new Strategic Plan is our roadmap to meet these challenges. The plan will serve as our guide over the next decade as we move from Point A, where we are, to Point B, where we want to be. We’re evolving from a transportation service to a key regional asset, enhancing mobility, driving economic growth, and improving quality of life.

DART President and CEO Nadine Lee announced findings on Friday September 6, at DART's second annual State of the Agency event in Addison, Texas.
Transit-oriented developments in the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) service area generated nearly $1 billion in direct spending and spurred 11,000 jobs between 2019 and 2021, DART President & CEO Nadine Lee announced during her second annual State of the Agency address on Friday.
The data comes from a recent study conducted by the University of North Texas Economic Research Group (ERG). It reveals the significant economic benefits of development projects near DART light rail stations. This study, led by Michael Carroll, Ph.D., evaluated real estate development within a quarter-mile radius of DART stations, confirming long-held beliefs among economists and real estate developers about DART’s impact on the region’s economic vitality.
“Transit services provided by DART are critical to regional mobility. DART’s network is designed to connect riders across city boundaries and provide crucial access to jobs, education, health care, entertainment and more,” said Nadine S. Lee, DART President and CEO. “DART opens up social and economic development opportunities at all of our stations.”
The study results are among numerous highlights from the State of the Agency address, sponsored by Archer Western Construction and held this year at the Renaissance Dallas Addison Hotel. Addison Mayor Bruce Arfsten and DART Board Chair Gary Slagel were among other featured speakers.
Lee, in her fourth year as DART president and CEO, also noted the agency’s long history of fiscal responsibility.
“We project every dollar we will spend over the next two decades and our board members approve that plan every year,” Lee said. “We plan and budget well within our means – and we have a long history of doing so.”
She pointed to the ERG study in highlighting the tremendous value DART brings to all 13 service area cities.
“This study further confirms long-held beliefs among economists and real estate developers about DART’s impact on our regional economy,” she said. The ERG study focused on 31 real estate development projects built near DART stations between 2019 and 2021. These projects encompassed a mix of commercial, residential, and public developments. The findings below illustrate the profound economic impact of these developments.
Direct Spending: DART’s transit-oriented projects generated over $980 million in direct spending.
Total Economic Impact: The cumulative economic impact within the 700-mile DART Service area, tracked by UNT since 1999, reached $17.1 billion, significantly boosting the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) region's economy.
Job Creation: These developments created 10,747 jobs in the DFW area.
Tax Revenue: The DART station area economic impact between 2019 and 2021 contributed $144.7 million in federal tax revenue and $49.6 million in state and local tax revenue.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the DFW region demonstrated remarkable economic activity from 2019 to 2021. Carroll emphasized that this growth is part of the region's broader, long-term trend of robust economic expansion. He noted that the trend of developing properties near light rail stations is not unique to DFW, as similar patterns are observed nationwide.
The study utilized IMPLAN software to create detailed economic models based on development spending data. IMPLAN is a widely used industry tool that calculates direct, indirect, and induced impacts of spending and employment. The results underscored the continuous economic growth and development around DART stations.
“Proximity to DART adds value to development,” said Lee. “The impact of DART light rail investments on local development shows residential and office space rent for substantially higher than surrounding projects. In total, development projects near DART stations since 1999 have resulted in an aggregated increased property value of $17.1 billion with additional contributions to the economy through direct and indirect means such as wage, tax, and other economic factors.”
Carroll highlighted the growing importance of connectivity and multi-modal access in Texas's rapidly urbanizing landscape, particularly in the DFW area.
“Over the decades, the development near DART light rail stations, including significant commercial, office and residential establishments, has not only provided transit accessibility but also simultaneously boosted the economic wellbeing of the DFW region,” Carroll stated. As the DFW region continues to urbanize, leveraging transit as a strategic mobility asset will not only enhance regional connectivity and accessibility, but is essential to sustaining our economic momentum through coordinated planning and development with our cities and alongside key stakeholders.

DART to test Silver Line trains on alignment between Plano and Richardson, Aug. 25-28
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) will begin a second run of vehicle testing on the Silver Line Regional Rail alignment beginning Sunday, Aug. 25.
The testing on Silver Line tracks will be exclusive to Segment C of the project, falling between Waterview Parkway and the Shiloh Road Station. Times of testing will occur between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. throughout the week.
Flaggers will be present at each of the rail crossings, where required by Federal Railroad Administration guidelines, to help drivers and pedestrians navigate traffic safely and accurately. Engineers and rail crews will be testing the timing and duration of gates, lights, and warning signals at each crossing to ensure safe transitions for both freight and commuter rail that will share operations in the corridor once the Silver Line is in revenue service.
“Safety for the public, our operators and employees are the top priority as we undergo this testing period,” said Trey Walker, DART vice president of capital design and construction. “We will be checking everything from top to bottom and reviewing, adjusting and re-testing to make sure that we can travel through the corridor safely. We want to make sure that anyone near the rail alignment knows we’re active in this area and coming through.”
Drivers and pedestrians can expect to see both Silver Line vehicles and CPKC freight rail trains running on the tracks during testing as crews will test a rail cutover between City Line Drive and Waterview Parkway. Freight rail service will still only operate during its normally scheduled times (between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.) once testing is complete.
Silver Line vehicle testing will include operating its simulated route with stops at the 12th Street, CityLine/Bush and UT Dallas stations with no passenger pick-up or drop-off points. All stations are still active construction sites, so onlookers are not allowed on platforms or nearby walkways. Quiet zones, which allow trains to use their horns only when there is a potential hazard on or near the tracks, will not be in effect during testing.
