Introducing Carole Joy Gellineau! Don't miss out on the chance to see Carole Joy Creations' gifts at the Juneteenth Event this Saturday. Be sure to swing by her booth!
Carole Joy's Story Continued:
After receiving her cards, a friend asked her to design one for him and his family. Within months Carole Joy Creations was launched with six of Carole Joy’s black and white pencil drawings. She sold her small card line in Hal's Restaurant and a few beauty parlors in the Hartford, CT area. Realizing that the industry demanded color to be competitive she added watercolors and oil paintings to the line. The consumer response was tremendous.
To keep up with the demand while continuing to write the card verses, it became necessary to hire freelance artists. Victor, experienced in marketing, decided to exhibit their line of cards in the National Stationery Show, held annually at the Javits Center in New York City. Eventually, the company added other products, including books; “Baby’s Heritage” and “Your Extraordinary Self”. Before long, Carole Joy Creations could be found in retail outlets from shops in Harlem to Macy's department stores, to retailers in the Caribbean and Africa.
She was commissioned by Carlson Craft, the largest wedding invitation company in the U.S., to design their line of African-American wedding invitations. Over the years, Carole Joy Creations grew to be one of the largest Black-owned greeting card companies in the country.
The company has been featured in numerous publications including Essence, Black Enterprise, the Danbury News-Times, Business Digest, the Hartford Courant, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Some of the awards and honors garnered by the entrepreneur include recognition from JCPenney, the NAACP, the State of Connecticut, the International Black Buyers and Manufacturers, Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha sororities, and the National Greeting Card Association.
Before retiring, she introduced the Carole Joy Creations Gallery at the Harlem Fine Arts Show to display the beautiful art that adorned products over the years.
