This kiddo created a car robot while targeting comparing/contrasting, describing and sequencing! He is doing a great job explaining the different parts of his robot and how it works! #robots #speechtherapy #comparing #contrasting #describe #slp #darien #momsofinstagram
✨Sensory-Based Speech Session ✨ 📣Regulation, engagement and intrinsic motivation are the building blocks to accessing a child’s language. Thank you- @jessieginsburg.slp ‼️ ➡️Takeaways from Tori’s session: ❤️ Follow the child’s lead- let them listen to their bodies. As therapists, it is our job to put our thinking caps on and be flexible in how we address and intersperse goals in session! Meaningful speech and language instruction doesn’t always have to be at table. 🧡 Joint attention looks different for Autistic children- and that’s OKAY! (Stay tuned for a future post on neuro diversity🧠) 💛 If your child is using an AAC device, model, model, model! 📱 💚 “Up on feet” is a simple activity that provides rich sensory input for sensory seekers. Provide other types of input as well like squeezes and tickles to balance out the system. 💙 Movement/sensory based activities provide meaningful opportunities for children to learn and use language. Encourage any and all forms of communication. We love a total communication approach! #speech #slp #sensory #sensoryseeker #autism #neurodiversity #darien #darienmoms #ct #privatepractice
Happy Monday! AAC Core Words of the Week 🛑 STOP 🟢 GO This kiddo is exploring his new device program (Proloquo2Go) while playing one of his favorite iPad games. AAC isnt just for our friends with limited verbal skills. Our clinicians use AAC to promote language learning as these programs offer multimodal input and a robust vocabulary. Using AAC also helps fade cueing as it supports independent initiation and use of language! #aac #cueing #vocabulary #languagelearning #ipad #speechtherapy #languagelearning #slp #darien #conneticut #privatepractice

Sensory “warm up” activity to aid with transitioning into the therapy room. Combine one of your child’s favorite close ended activities (e.g., puzzle, nesting blocks) with a sensory item (Textured walking blocks are used in this video) to create a calming transitional activity! #sensoryplay #therapy #calming #transitioning #walkingblocks #puzzles #speechtherapy #privatepractice #momsofinstagram #darienmoms
Play is an especially appropriate context for language learning, because it is highly motivating, it permits the integration of content, form and function; and it encourages the child to bring knowledge of ‘scripts’ for everyday events to the foreground where this knowledge can support language use” (Newman & Colleagues 2015) ➡️Why teach play? - Playing is fun! - Endless opportunities for learning and using language in a naturalistic way - Develops social skills, flexibility and problem-solving skills - Promotes exploration and imagination - “Play and problem-solving are important contexts for extending the child’s use of newly emerging forms and meanings.” (Paul, 2017) - Play and Thinking are two of the many milestones of normal communicative development in preschool years (Paul, 2017 Table 9.1) ➡️JASPER is an evidenced based therapeutic treatment approach based on a combination of behavioral and developmental principles. - Developed by Dr. Connie Kasari (UCLA) - This approach focuses on foundations of social communication (joint attention, imitation, play) and utilizes naturalistic strategies to increase rate and complexity of social communication. - Goal of JASPER: Increasing spontaneous initiations of skills - Seeking out social interactions - Sharing and communicating with others - Generating their own play ideas ➡️Four Components of a JASPER Play Routine 1. An active social partner 2. Motivating and developmentally appropriate toys 3. Repeated practice 4. Flexibility and the addition of new steps and toys #jasper #practice #flexible #motivation #social #strategies #evidencebased #speech #behavioral #developmental #slp #darien
SLP Sensory Strategy Tips of the Day ⭐️ Start your session off with vestibular input to wake up your child’s system (swinging, jumping, bouncing on a ball) ⭐️ Proprioceptive input (deep pressure such as joint compression or bear hugs) combined with a simple fine motor activity (eg. bracelet making) is a calming activity to bring your child back to an optimal level of arousal for session ⭐️ Quickshift Regulation music is being played in the background for additional auditory input ⭐️Regulation is foundational along with engagement. Sensory time is highly motivating for our kiddos. When a child is regulated, engaged and intrinsically motivated, we can access their language and higher cognitive functions. What sensory strategies do you use in your sessions? Comment below! #sensory #strategy #tips #speechtherapy #language #crafts #privatepractice #momsofinstagram #momsofdarien
If you don’t have this game, you should get it! It is such a fun game to play in the hot summer. It helps build fine motor skills while targeting words like: pop, more, bubbles, sheep, push, etc. #teamwork #languagelearning #bubbles #summeractivities #targetwords #finemotorskills
