We love using science experiments as the basis for a pragmatic dyad session!
Wishing Liz a very happy birthday today! 🎉
Raline Sexton will be coming to our Darien office to talk about the science of sleep. If you would like to attend please RSVP!
Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Alli! 🎂
Many Autistic children are primarily gestalt language processors (GLPs), meaning they often first learn to communicate using scripts or gestalts.
Lots of children will progress naturally through the stages, but many kids will need additional support.
However, it’s common for parents and therapists to attempt to use strategies developed to support analytic language processors, which can slow the language development process for many Autistic GLPS.
This is why it’s so important for people who care for and work with gestalt language processors understand how to best support them!
Happy Birthday to our wonderful SLP Megan!
If you haven’t seen post about feeding and neurodiversity yet, take a look!

The Team at Lindsay Scott SLP & Co. is ready for another great year of Speech, Language and Learning!
All smiles on the swing today! 😁 When the swing comes to a stop, this kiddo practices requesting more.
Swipe to learn how parents can best support Episodic Memory (EM) and social development in autistic children. ➡️ ➡️ ➡️
EM and social development have been shown to be linked to one another. Parents of autistic children are therefore highly encouraged to engage in elaborative reminiscing with their child to support their child's memory and social development.
Here are some evidence-based strategies we recommend for doing so!
This kiddo is practicing colors and requesting more! We're having fun and feeling motivated by combining two motivating activities: baby sharks and bus. 🦈🚌
Here are some simple tips ASHA recommends for supporting language development in young children! We hope this information is helpful for parents looking to enrich their child's language environment.
1️⃣ Play! Model language in the context of songs, social games and movement!
2️⃣ Repeat what your child says. This shows your child that you understand what they're saying and will increase their confidence to communicate.
3️⃣ Expand on your child's utterances. This shows your child how to put words together in new ways!
4️⃣ Use pictures to talk about past events. In addition to talking about who, what, and where, also include internal states and feelings.
5️⃣ Read together. Instead of asking questions, label and describe objects and actions in picture books. This leads to exposure to new vocabulary and concepts.
What are some tips that you might have for parents? Comment below! ⬇️
Having some fun with balloons this morning! We're using different colored balloons to model colors on our AAC device. 🎈
Adding water to our car wash to practice our "tongue tap" /t/ sound at the end of words! We used "Get it wet!" as one of our models for final /t/ sounds.
SLPs in action! Thank you, Kristen and Katherine, for setting up our brand-new swing in the office. Our kiddos are going to love it!
Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) and Analytic Language Processing (ALP) are two ways that children learn and process language. Recognizing the characteristics of GLP is important so that your child’s language development can be nurtured and supported effectively.
Based on how a child processes language, the best treatment approach can be determined. When a child is identified as a GLP, the speech-language pathologist will use the 6 stages of Natural Language Acquisition (NLA), which outlines the language development of a GLP, to determine where to start intervention. Other ways to support your GLP include identifying the underlying meaning of your child’s gestalts, acknowledging your child’s gestalts as communication by repeating them, modeling language, and engaging in child-led play.
Happy Friday! Here we are coloring while modeling different colors on the talker. 🖍🎨
Using a highly motivating activity while cooling off in the heat to promote requesting. Using PROMPT to assist verbal approximations for more and water!
This kiddo loves to play with superhero figurines! He gets to express his creativity freely by making up stories with these characters while practicing his targeted language goals.
Baby shark is a highly motivating activity for this kiddo! Today a new book was introduced with songs. We sang songs while modeling keywords on his AAC device.
In phonological disorders, individuals may struggle with organizing and producing sounds correctly, leading to difficulties in clear communication. Characterized by patterns of errors, such as substituting one sound for another or omitting sounds, phonological disorders can impact a person's ability to be understood and express themselves fully. However, different phonological disorders can be treated with different interventions!
Working on expanding gestalts through a play-based approach making play-doh people!
🚂 All aboard the learning express! This kiddo is practicing identifying numbers 1-10 with our pretend train shop! He points to each one as he counts because the visual cues of each train help him to associate a specific number with a particular quantity.
Working on identifying different long A sounds in our reading and spelling them!
