Flamingo Gardens accepted many birds evacuated from Peace River Wildlife Center - PRWC which was hit by both hurricanes Helene and Milton. With huge assistance from our collaboration partner, The Pet Project FL, who donated transport, we will care for these beautiful native animals until they can be safely returned. Please donate to support Flamingo Gardens' efforts to help #MakeADifference and consider supporting these other wonderful animal welfare charities as they recover from the storms. #MakeADifferenceMonday #FlamingoGardens #ThePetProjectFL #PeaceRiverWildlifeCenter

It’s feeding time for the alligators and Elvis sure loves his snacks! 🐊 American Alligators play an important role in balancing the South Florida ecosystem, and here at Flamingo Gardens, we’re proud to give both Elvis and Priscilla a safe home. #WildlifeWednesday
Opening September 28, 2024 in the Gallery, "Rewild Florida – The Art of Stephanie McMillan" is an exhibit of drawings of South Florida plants and wildlife by Fort Lauderdale artist Stephanie McMillan. Her art portrays iconic species such as the Florida panther, manatee, and alligator, as well as less widely appreciated species like the spiny orb weaver, larraflower, and the ring-neck snake. Moments like this make all the hard work worthwhile. This year, we received a few killdeer eggs, and although we couldn’t see through them with a candler, we put them in an incubator. Lo and behold, we were surprised when they hatched! Three months later, and with zero human imprint, we set this survivor free! He did a great job flying and ate immediately after release. #WildlifeWednesday #FlamingoGardens

It’s breakfast time, and our flamingos are chowing down! They feed by dipping their heads upside down into the water, scooping up water and mud, and pushing it through their beaks. The lamellae in their beaks trap small organisms like algae, tiny crustaceans, and plankton, leaving behind a tasty treat. #FlamingoFriday

This cute little nighthawk was found by one of our staff members in the middle of the road as a nestling. After months of care, he was trained to eat live bugs and was released into the wild yesterday. Nighthawks have incredibly large mouths and fly with them open to catch bugs, flies, and mosquitoes in the air. After the recent rains, he should have plenty of mosquitoes to eat! #WildlifeWednesday #FlamingoGardens
