Flamingo Gardens
Spend the day in this 60 acre botanical garden and Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary. Florida's largest
Established in 1927, Flamingo Gardens is one of the oldest botanical gardens in South Florida. The 60-acre not-for-profit botanical garden contains over 3,000 tropical and sub-tropical species of plants and trees and its Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the state. With some of the last natural jungle growth in South Florida, the Wray Bot
It’s breakfast time, and our flamingos are chowing down! They feed by dipping their heads upside down into the water, scooping up water and mud, and pushing it through their beaks. The lamellae in their beaks trap small organisms like algae, tiny crustaceans, and plankton, leaving behind a tasty treat.
Flamingo Groves (now Flamingo Gardens), through business partner Frank Stirling, was part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture program as an official citrus lab experimental station. The goal of the station was to test multiple species of citrus in the South Florida climate. This article from May 14, 1929, mentions that Flamingo Groves received 241 buds from various species of citrus for testing.
Art of Bonsai Fall sessions started this past Saturday. New students worked with their dedicated New Student Instructor and 4 Expert Bonsai Teachers worked with the more experienced students to help them wire, report, and trim their trees.
Registration for Winter Bonsai Work Shop Class will open in late October. Please check our website:

This cute little nighthawk was found by one of our staff members in the middle of the road as a nestling. After months of care, he was trained to eat live bugs and was released into the wild yesterday. Nighthawks have incredibly large mouths and fly with them open to catch bugs, flies, and mosquitoes in the air. After the recent rains, he should have plenty of mosquitoes to eat!

The Everglades is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exceptional variety of its water habitats has made it a sanctuary for over 400 species of birds and it provides refuge for over 20 rare, endangered, and threatened species. These include the Florida panther, snail kite, alligator, crocodile, and manatee.
While Flamingo Gardens is not located in the Everglades, it is adjacent. Flamingo Gardens educated 250,000 visitors about the importance of this World Heritage site in 2023.

Flamingo Groves (now Flamingo Gardens) published its own postcards so visitors could share the beauty of South Florida with friends near and far. This image, from one of the postcards in our historic archive, is from the early to mid-1960s. It shows visitors listening to a guided tour of the orange groves. Today, you no longer need to stand in the hot sun for our tours. Visitors can take a narrated tram ride through the grounds to learn more about our flora and fauna and the history of Flamingo Groves. We also have the Wray Home Museum and VIP tours available to guests.
North American River Otters' may have streamlined bodies for swimming, but their faces are made for photo ops! Fun fact: A group of otters are sometimes known as a "romp." Do you know other names for a group of otters?

If you would like to join the EcoTeers and help with our efforts, contact Ashley at [email protected] or call 954-473-2955.

Did you know that Flamingo Gardens has many of the largest trees in the state of Florida? Flamingo Gardens has 15 trees that have been certified by the Florida Department of Forestry as the largest of their species, called Champion Trees. Many of them are the largest in the continental United States as they won't grow in climates further north.
We are working with the Department of Forestry to certify more of our trees as Champions, and currently have 11 new nominations.
Flamingo Gardens works daily to protect and expand the tree canopy here in the Gardens, to help absorb carbon and mitigate climate change, but also to showcase the beauty of tropical and sub-tropical trees. These are just four of the 15 Champion trees at Flamingo Gardens: "Cavanillesia plantanfolia" or Cuipo tree; "Enterolobium cyclocarpum" or Ear Pod tree; "Sterculia apetala" or Panama tree; and "Khaya nyasica" or African Mahogany tree.
Thanks for coming out for James the Flamingo’s Birthday Bash! Photos of this afternoon’s celebration by Laura Wyatt.
