House of Bread
A community kitchen serving a nutritious lunchtime meal every day of the year!
Today's noteable events during lunch service: 34 children were served lunch, most of them with parents. Our Director was losing to a child in a board game of Sorry! The game had to end so the child could catch the busy with mom.
One dad was given information on the Montgomery County fatherhood initiative, and selected books to read to his little girl at home.
Another family, who is staying in their camper, was given information on how to access showers and laundry services at the Dream Center.
And, two individuals looking for a detox program were given options for treatment.
In addition to serving lunch, we provided meals for programs at Dakota Center and Dayton Fellowship Club today.
During the last few days, we've connected 2 people with Montgomery County Addiction services to receive recovery services from drug addiction. Two may not seem like much when we've served over 1,000 meals in these days, but these two people.... it means the world. It means a chance to get their lives back. We're always serving more than just lunch.
Thank you to Auditor Karl Keith and his staff for volunteering today!
We are so fortunate to know and adore Mal - and be the recipient of the incredible vegetables that he grows every year for us to cook! Hands down, the best butter lettuce, squash, zucchini, beets, tomatoes the size of softballs…. We are fortunate that his labor truly benefits hundreds of people who walk through our doors
And the Greek fest this coming weekend!
Find a complete list of 30 festivals taking place in September and 32 taking place in October at thislocallife.com/festivals.
Over this Labor Day weekend of 3 days, we served 835 meals in our dining rooms. Of those 835 meals, 245 of them (30%) were served in our Family Dining Room to our youngest guests and their adults. Our youngest guests range in age from infants to teenagers, and it is a pleasure to serve!
Our hearts are full right now! One of our former staff members came in recently to talk with our community health worker about their struggles with addiction. Taraisa made the calls and got them into the program they needed. He called today to tell her thank you! His ending words on the call: “tell her I think she saved my life”.
This is what we do. 365 days a year we are here to care for people in crisis.
Addiction takes many different forms and looks differently, but the damage it creates can be devastating. Calls like this give everyone struggling with addiction what they need most: hope.
Always grateful to community partners who help serve our neighbors. An hispanic family showed up at our back door at 330 today looking for an open food pantry. We were able to help direct them to our friends at Have a Gay Day on Needmore Road before they closed at 4pm. (they are about the only pantry open on Sundays). We shared information with the family about other pantries and our operating hours and services.
On the day when our friends at FOA Families of Addicts are holding Rally 4 Recovery, we are CELEBRATING that two of our guests came in, straight out of rehab programs, sharing with us that Recovery happens! Our community health worker will be encouraging their continuing recovery efforts and connecting them with peer recovery supporters and sober living options.
A big thank you to Samaritan Behavioral Health for spending time in our family dining room doing activities with kids and passing out some school supplies.
Come visit them today and tomorrow during lunch!
We had a few volunteer slots open up for Wednesday if you’d like to volunteer with us from 10am-2pm!
