How to Keep Your Apartment Cool
🔹 USE FANS.
Fans can make a room feel up to seven degrees cooler, and they use much less electricity than the air conditioner. Place some portable fans throughout your apartment. If it’s an extra warm day, try putting a bowl of ice in front of the fan. It acts as a DIY air conditioner.
Another trick is to utilize exhaust fan. Exhaust fan take the hot air out. Hot air rises, so turning on the exhaust fan over your oven while you cook or turning on the bathroom for while you shower will put the hot air out of your space.
🔹 COVER YOUR WINDOWS.
Window treatments aren’t just a design element, they can keep heat out. Keeping your blinds closed, especially when you are not at home, will keep your apartment cool. Help spruce up your room while also cooling it down by adding curtains. Simple, light colored fabrics work to deflect the sun’s rays. You could also purchase specialty curtains like insulated or blackout drapes to help to keep the heat out. You have a lot of options for styles and curtain type, so see which works best for you. To make your apartment look larger, try hanging the curtains just above the windows!
🔹 TURN OFF HEAT GENERATORS.
Running electronics like your computer and TV all day put a lot of heat. Be sure to turn off and unplug electronics when you’re not using them. Similarly, close the doors of rooms you don’t use throughout the day. This lets the cool air circulate through the open areas easier.
🔹 PROPERLY USE YOUR AIR CONDITIONING.
The energy preferred setting for AC is 78 degrees Fahrenheit. This seems warm, but when paired with the tips and tricks above it should be comfortable. If the 78-degree temp still isn’t cutting it, be mindful of not setting the AC too low. Your apartment won’t cool down faster by setting the temperature to 60. It’ll just make your unit overwork, and potentially acquire exponential costs if you forget to set it back to the normal temperature. Decide what temp works for you and try to not adjust the setting any cooler. You can bump up the temp a bit higher when you’re not home. It will save on energy costs, but it might take a minute for the room to get back down to your preferred temperature.
🔹 SELF-COOLING TIPS.
While most of these tips pertain to your space, there are plenty of things you can do to cool yourself down during those extra warm days. The most important thing you can do is drink plenty of water.
You’ll also want to think about materials. Wear light-weight cotton or moisture-wicking materials and invest in seasonal bedding. Ditch the extra blankets and heavy quilt for lightweight cooling sheets and pillows. If you’re especially uncomfortable at night, try investing in a cooling mattress pad. It doesn’t have to cost you an exorbitant amount to stay cool and comfortable in your home.
Hopefully, these tips will help you beat the summer heat without having to double your utility budget. Get creative on staying cool!
It can be hard to find the energy to get the week started! Here are a few ways to raise your energy this Monday morning!
Quick Cleaning Tips 🧹🧴🧼
Ah – it’s that time again. Cleaning day has arrived – but wait! You don’t have time to deep clean your apartment today. Whether you have unexpected guests stopping by or you’re throwing a last-minute get together, one thing is for sure – you’re on a time crunch. If it’s cleaning day for you anyway, or if you should’ve cleaned last Saturday, then you probably can’t bear to see your apartment in bad shape for one more day.
With a few quick cleaning tips that cover tidying your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living area, your apartment will be s***k and span within an hour.
Keep in mind – this won’t be your typical deep cleaning session, but it’ll keep your mind at ease until the next afternoon you decide to tackle your apartment’s dirt and grime. But before you get started, here’s a quick list of supplies you’ll need:
• Duster
• Paper towels
• Multi-surface disinfectant spray
• Glass cleaner
• Vacuum
• Sponge
• Foaming disinfectant bathroom cleaner
• A desire to clean (this may be harder to come by)
DECLUTTER YOUR APARTMENT.
✅Decluttering is the first step to cleaning your apartment. You won’t be able to get everything done within an hour if you are cleaning around your belongings. Put the dirty dishes from your sink into the dishwasher and pick up all of your dirty clothes and place them into the hamper.
DUST TABLETOPS.
✅This is where your handy dandy duster comes in. avoid trying to wipe down your tabletops, especially with disinfecting wipes, before dusting. You will end up with a wet wipe full of dust, making it harder to actually get grime off the counters without spreading your collected dust back onto the surface. Dust your dresser, nightstands, living room table and any side tables or counters that could use a quick swipe.
WIPE EVERYTHING DOWN.
✅It’s time to wipe down your counters, tables and any surface that will be seen or used by guests (or that you use frequently). Typically, paper towels and a multi-surface disinfecting spray will do the trick. You just want to remove any sticky spots or food stains on the kitchen counter and give all of your surfaces a nice shine.
Here's a tip for cleaning your bathroom: your sponge and foaming disinfectant bathroom cleaner will be your new best friend. Simply spray the foam, let it sit for a minute, and then use a damp sponge to wipe it up. And don’t forget to use this foaming spray on the toilet, as well. Next, spray your bathroom mirror with glass spray, and wipe it down with a paper towel to remove water splash marks.
HIDE THAT CAN’T BE CLEANED.
✅Don’t have time to organize all of the clothes you’ve taken off the hanger and tried on? Put them in the closet – that goes for your assortment of shoes on the floor, as well. All of your random stuff that you haven’t found a perfect place for yet – put it in the closet. This is what closets are for! Not really… but that’s what they’re for when you have company coming and only a short time to make the place sparkle.
Close the shower curtain, keep items on your bathroom sink minimal by putting your toiletries or makeup under the sink and replace your dirty dishtowels with clean ones.
VACUUM.
✅Quickly vacuum your bathroom floor to remove hair and dust, the entryway to remove what’s been tracked in from outside, the living room by the couches, and the kitchen where the majority of the crumbs lie. You may not have time to vacuum the entire place, but vacuuming the most highly trafficked areas (and most highly seen) will do great things for the appearance of your newly cleaned apartment.
FINISHING TOUCHES.
✅You’re almost at the finish line with just the finishing touches left. Fluff the couch pillows, fold the decorative blankets, place your décor back where you had it, and hey – why not light a candle (or turn on your plug-in candle warmers) to set the ambiance!
Now that your apartment sparkles (for the most part), it’s time to make it smell as lovely as it looks. Voila! You have a clean apartment!
