Looks like Ill be adding a new starter solenoid to the list soon also. Bike previously had S&S heads and carb swapped in. Sitting at 26k miles now. Now I have major house projects in 2 houses to deal with the next few months. Hopefully with 2 bikes running Ill get some ride time in too. After the house projects, the chopper builds start in what will be the new shop.
Mounting the apes to the FLHT
Since the shovelhead project didnt make it for bikeweek due to parts issues, had to rebuild the clutch on the Road King to get a bike on the road. Installed Baker Heavy Duty throwout bearing, then an OEM style VTwin clutch pack in the other side. Topped it off with BelRay fluids. Shifts really nice now.
Couldnt find any how-to on Youtube for this so I made one myself. Cleve blocks with Jims 1743 and 1707
https://youtu.be/QT-zXzSD6CE
Replace cleve blocks in shovelhead Harley swingarm using Jims 1743 and Jims 1707 tools I couldn't find any videos or guides on how to do this on the internet, so I made a quick and dirty video on how to replace the cleve blocks in a 40 year old...
Making the extensions for the controls harnesses on the shovel FLHT. All joints soldered and friction couples, everything heat wrapped.
Slowly going together.
Cool tip of the day: remove steel bushings or races from stuck aluminum housing without damage and when smacking it out isn't an option. Ran into this issue while disassembling the FLHT shovel forks for rebuild. Trust me, the other ways are terrible on a job like this. Figured this out the hard way 😄
Spending the weekend watching qualifying and track testing for the Rolex 24 next weekend, which Ill also attend. Another awesome perk to Daytona life.
Polishing the fork sliders for the FLHT rebuild
My E85 Marty tuned 2011 P7B. When the FLHT is done Ive got some plans for this next..
Tearing down for fork rebuild, lowering and neck rebuild
FLHT shovel project: seat reshape
Wanted to cut that original couch way down and moderninize the bike with a more sleek look while getting my ass closer to the ground. Heres the process of reshaping in elapsed time.
Some before and after of the seat shape
And there it is with everything mounted up tight. Time to build an old school lowrider
Shovelhead FLHT project exhaust done. Fitted "new style" pipes to old style mounts by making hybrid brackets. Tig welded them together and those cool Krome Werks NOS pipes I had laying around are mounted solidly using the original rubber mounts. With some more tweaking around the engine and carb its sounding killer now. The goal is a complete rebuild on everything except engine and trans before bike week is here. 8 weeks out. Next up: suspension.
Now the carb is rebuilt, correctly jetted and a few other things cleaned up, mocking up some pipes to see how it all works together. This old shovel is sounding pretty snappy. It loves the match up so I'll go ahead and fabricate brackets and mounts to get these pipes mounted solidly. One step closer to cruising this nearly 40 year old bike.
Prelim fire up after carb rebuild. Fine tune will come later after a little more work.
Rebuilding the S&S E for the FLHT shovel project
Getting the first shop space set up in FL. Getting excited now. 👀
Been busy moving to my new house in Daytona Beach, now that my second book Beyond OODA is released. One of the many projects prepping my new place was to clean up the garage and get it ready to be my new shop and gym for awhile.
I used Rustoleum RockSolid polycuramine. Spent all day Saturday scrubbing, scraping sweeping and rinsing the concrete floor. Today I woke up and applied the coating. It really looks great.
A few thoughts if youre thinking about using this: Thoroughly rinae the degreaser and etching off the floor COMPLETELY. It will fisheye your finish. Also, I have a 1.25 car garage and the 2.5 car kit was JUST enough to do this space with 1 good coverage. The decorative chips are a bitch to apply evenly if theres any wind at all.
Cant wait to get my bikes over here and get back on my shovel chop project. This will be a great place to work, workout and create some cool content. The beach being 10 mins away for an easy break whenever is a bonus.
I'm Back!
Reviving this page for my personal custom projects. No more guitars. Choppers, cars, maybe some kitchen cabinets...I just like custom making s**t. Took a long break, traveled the country, made money, wrote and published two successful books, now slowly coming back to some gratifying handiwork.
Dennis Drummond dropped by from Nashville with his #001 GSM. This thing has been toured in multiple states and played on every studio track he's played in Nashville. Damn Dennis its only 2 years old!
After 2 years touring multiple climates and probably countless hundreds and hundreds of hours of play, the SS frets show no wear and the neck relief has not moved at all.
Nikolas A-Killa getting down on Keith's GSM. Continuing to see my guitars out there still making players smile...that's my reward.
For those who don't know, Nikolas is an up and coming young gun who I'm sure will be making an impact hailing from the Youngstown area.
A great shot from Dennis Drummond and his GSM #001. Damn that thing has got some wear on it!!
