As we age, our bodies tend to break down old bone tissue and form new bone tissue to replace it. But for those who have osteoporosis, the bone tissue either forms too slowly or breaks down too quickly. This causes bones to become thin, fragile, and prone to fracture.

Have you ever been injured while playing sports, lifting heavy objects or ever fallen? At some point in our life, one of these scenarios will ring a bell. When that happens, all we know is that we are in pain. But what does it mean? Is it a rupture? Is it a tear?

When you hear about injuries caused by a rupture or tear, the injury is to either muscles or tendons (or both). Left untreated, it may cause permanent disability. So if you are in pain after an injury, seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

At The Orthopedic Clinic, we want you to live your life in full motion. Having a ruptured muscle or tendon causes excruciating pain that prevents you from doing that.

Cold and heat therapies are both effective for enhancing muscle recovery and reducing muscle damage. Ice is better to use towards swelling, inflammation and pain early on where heat may actually make an injury worse.
If you’re dealing with lingering injuries (older than 6 weeks) then it’s okay to use heat. The increased blood flow relaxes tight muscles and relieves aching joints. This is especially helpful to improve range of motion on a joint that maybe isn’t moving as well.
Use heat before stretching or doing a home exercise program. You can still use ice or cold treatment after exercise or activities to prevent any flare of inflammation. Just remember “Warm up, cool down”.

Knee injuries are the most common injury in female athletes. Along with ligament damage like an ACL tear, females tend to have increased rates of irritation under the kneecap known as patellofemoral syndrome. Women's joints, including the knee, generally have more looseness and range of motion than men's. Women also often have less muscle mass around the knee, contributing to more instability, which can lead to a ligament tear if the ligament gets overstretched.

If you think you may have a knee injury, let us help you. Call us at (386) 255-4596 to schedule an appointment.

As Florida temperatures start to drop, more people tend to golf. Here are 6 ways to prevent golf injuries for the upcoming golf season!

1. Strive to be flexible. We might sound like a broken record, but flexibility is your number one friend in golf.
2. Strengthen your muscles. No need to bulk up, just really try to find the right strength training exercises.
3. Another great way is to build up your endurance by walking, bicycling or even swimming. This helps with those long hours on the course.
4. Marinating proper posture. Try standing with your feet should-width apart and slightly rotate outward. Knees should be slightly bent while keeping your spine relatively straight. Your truck tilted forward leaving most of the movement to come from your hips. DO NOT HUNCH over the ball.
5. Beware of over swinging. Be patient and relax. Over swinging can hurt your lower back and put stress on your joints.
6. Last but surely not least, select the right shoes. If you can, wear specifically designed golf shoes with short cleats. Long cleats dig into the sod and hold your feet planted as you swing, which may place more strain on your knees

Our Story

The Orthopedic Clinic has been helping greater Daytona Beach area patients live their life in full motion with expert orthopedic care for over 50 years. The practice has grown to include 12 physicians, 10 mid-level providers, with a professional staff of more than 150 taking care of patients at 5 convenient locations. The Orthopedic Clinic offers physical therapy, the area’s only orthopedic walk-in clinic, and a state-of-the-art surgery center. With offices in Daytona Beach, Port Orange and Palm Coast, The Orthopedic Clinic is the largest and most comprehensive orthopedic practice in the area.

The Orthopedic Clinic was founded in 1961 by Dr. Thurman Gillespy Jr., who was one of the first orthopedic surgeon in the Daytona Beach community. His practice provided much needed orthopedic care that wasn’t previously available, and it quickly grew to a multi-provider practice in East Central Florida.

Dr. Gillespy trained in an orthopedics program in Philadelphia, PA, where he met Dr. Gilbert Martin, Dr. Willis Stose and Dr. Mel Dodd who joined The Orthopedic clinic shortly after its inception. The founding partners believed that orthopedics was about treating the individual patient, not just the illness. They took the patient’s lifestyle and health goals into account before recommending a treatment plan.

Today, we still follow in our founder’s footsteps. Our mission is to provide quality, cost-effective healthcare to the community-one patient at a time.
