Our Annual Meeting was held on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Georgia Piedmont Technical College's DeKalb Conference Center. Our speakers included Board Chair Marquetta Bryan, '16, and Interim Executive Director Shara Sanders, '17.

At the Annual Meeting, we opened with a recap of our progress on strategic goals and a forecast for the upcoming year. Here are remarks from Interim Executive Director Shara Sanders:

Since beginning the Community Service Projects (CSP) program component in 2014, Leadership DeKalb has partnered with 50+ local nonprofit organizations on a variety of projects.

Leadership DeKalb welcomes new board member Adria Welcher, Ph.D., ’21, to its board of directors. Dr. Welcher is the Director of General Education and Associate Professor of Sociology at Morehouse College.

With a tenured background in higher education, Dr. Welcher is very passionate about social justice issues and understanding inequalities. Her primary research interests are race and class inequities in educational outcomes and residential choices. In addition, Dr. welcher has been featured in publications and on two PBS telecasts. She is an active member of the American Sociological Association, the National Academic Advising Association, and the Southern Sociological Society where she is the immediate past chair of the Committee on Racial and Ethnic Minorities. Dr. Welcher’s terms run through 2028.

With focus on the entire county, we position current and emerging leaders – reflecting the area's rich diversity – to unite, commit, and act to make DeKalb a premier place to live, work and enjoy life. Class members learn about history, diversity, government, justice, arts and culture, education, health and economic development in the county.

Classmates and alumni gain access to other leaders in all of these sectors. With over 1,000 alumni, we facilitate long-term leadership sustainability.
