In response to National Weather Service forecasts of heat indices exceeding 100 degrees, DeKalb County is opening cooling centers on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.🌞🌅

DeKalb County recreation centers and libraries will be available as cooling centers, during the locations’ normal business hours. Libraries are closed on Sundays.

For a list of available libraries, visit www.dekalblibrary.org/locations. For a list of available recreation centers, visit www.dekalbcountyga.gov/parks/mission-statementand click the Recreation Programs and Centers dropdown arrow.

Water fountains will be accessible at available libraries. 

A room in each available recreation center will be designated as a cooling center and water fountains and bottled water will be accessible at recreation centers and libraries. 

During cooling center activations, recreation center pools will be free to the public from 2 to 6 p.m.
The DeKalb County Department of Human Services, located at 30 Warren Street, Atlanta, GA 30317, also will be open to the public as a cooling center Friday and Monday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., during the excessive heat.

Seniors needing assistance can call the Senior Link Line at (770) 322-2950 for an assessment of need.
Persons in DeKalb County who need homelessness assistance or housing services can contact DeKalb County Coordinated Entry by calling (404) 687-3500.

The following community partners are providing assistance during the excessive heat:
Tucker First United Methodist Church, Sunday, June 30, 2024, and each Sunday, from 1:00 – 6:00 pm.  Free lunch, laundry and shower on Tucker First United Methodist Church Activities Center, 4315 Church Street, Tucker, GA 30084. This Shower Ministry is open every Sunday regardless of the heat emergency. For information, call 470-431-7800.

Seniors needing assistance can call the Senior Link Line at (770) 322-2950 for an assessment of need.

On Wednesday, June 26, demolition began at North DeKalb Mall to make way for construction of the mixed-use development Lulah Hills. The 73-acre project is a collaboration between DeKalb County Government, Decide DeKalb and national retail real estate owner EDENS, and will include retail and restaurant spaces, private residences, a 150-key hotel, and green spaces. Attendees of the demolition ceremony included DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, CEO-elect Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, Board of Commissioners, former Commissioner Jeff Rader, and Decide DeKalb President Dorian DeBarr.

🚒 DeKalb County Fire Rescue (DCFR) and the City of Decatur Fire Department will host a female firefighter weekend on June 22 - 23 to celebrate and empower women firefighters. 👩🏻‍🚒👩🏽‍🚒👩🏿‍🚒

The two-day community event will educate the public on the vital roles, challenges, and achievements of female firefighters through educational talks, practical demonstrations, and interactive activities.

On June 22, at DeKalb County Fire Station #7, 1712 Columbia Drive, Decatur, Ga. 30032, the community will receive in-depth insight into the life of a firefighter, including a tour of the new fire station and a live demonstration. RSVP at https://forms.office.com/g/md0SXBnmw8.

On June 23, an event for girls aged 14-18 will be held at the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Academy, 3161 Warren Road, Decatur, Ga. 30032. To receive a hands-on experience, participants will be immersed in the world of firefighting and will have the opportunity to challenge themselves with various firefighting skills. DeKalb County CEO Michael L. Thurmond and the Board of Commissioners hosted the sold-out event at Rainbow Park Amphitheater on Saturday, June 15. The 2024 Juneteenth Concert featured national recording artists El Debarge and BRICK featuring Jimmy Brown.

In 2020, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners voted to make Juneteenth an annual holiday in DeKalb County. DeKalb County Government has recognized June 19 as a paid holiday for DeKalb County employees since 2021.

CEO Thurmond was also honored with a custom painting by Atlanta-based artist Cecil Bernard.

On June 13, Super District 6 Commissioner Ted Terry hosted a community town hall meeting for residents of District 3 and Super District 7 at South DeKalb Senior Center. Attendees voiced concerns over recent BOC vacancies after former Commissioners Larry Johnson and Lorraine Cochran-Johnson stepped down in March. COO Zach Williams and department heads/representatives from DeKalb County Police Department, Code Compliance, Public Works, Roads & Drainage, Sanitation, SPLOST, and Watershed were also in attendance.

🏆 DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond was recently honored by the Atlanta Business League during their 45th Annual CEO Awards ceremony. Presented by Corporate Environmental Risk Management CEO and President Al Edwards, CEO Thurmond received the Distinguished Service Award for his staunch support of minority business development and his dedicated service to DeKalb County. First Lady Zola Thurmond was in attendance to accept the award on his behalf.

U.S. Representative Nikema Williams (GA-05) was also honored with the Catalyst Award.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs and District 2 Commissioner Michelle Long Spears recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new mural at Mason Mill Park. Made possible through the DeKalb District 2 Park Bond, the mural was completed in four months and is located under the bridge on South Peachtree Creek Trail. Atlanta-based artist Jermaine Clark was selected to complete the project.

After the ceremony, Commissioner Michelle Long Spears and the District 2 team hosted a community meeting to update residents on current and upcoming projects.

Bottled water will again be distributed today for DeKalb County residents who have been affected by the City of Atlanta’s water main breaks.  
 
One case of water per household will be distributed beginning at 1 p.m. today, June 3, at the Atlanta-DeKalb Human Services Complex, 30 Warren Street, Atlanta.
 
The water is available for customers in the affected area who are experiencing low to no water pressure during the City of Atlanta’s water outages and repairs.

Bottled water will again be distributed Sunday for DeKalb residents who have been affected by the City of Atlanta’s water main breaks.  
 
One case of water per household will be distributed beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday at the Atlanta-DeKalb Human Services Complex, 30 Warren Street, Atlanta.
 
Representatives from the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management,
Department of Human Services and
Fire Rescue and Police Department are coordinating the distribution.
 
“We are honored to provide mutual aid and assistance to Atlanta-DeKalb residents and our friends and neighbors in Atlanta during this crisis,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said.

The water is available for customers in the affected area who are experiencing low to no water pressure during the City of Atlanta’s water outages and repairs.
 
Earlier today, DeKalb distributed approximately 2,000 bottles of water to county residents who are city of Atlanta water customers.
 
Additionally, the county delivered bottled water to three City of Atlanta fire stations which served as distribution locations.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue has sent a 3,000-gallon tanker to assist the city of Atlanta, which is experiencing water outages throughout the downtown service area due to two water main breaks.

✈️ On May 11, DeKalb-Peachtree Airport celebrated its annual Good Neighbor Day Air Show. The event featured aerial demonstrations from pilots and paratroopers, and exhibits from DeKalb County departments. This year’s festivities commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day which occurred on June 6, 1944 when WWII allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France.
