She grew up in Syracuse, New York, spending summers on Owasco Lake. She attended St. Mary’s Academy in Los Angeles, California, then moved back east to attend Le Moyne College, graduating in 1959. At Le Moyne, she met Joseph Mantaro. They were married in 1960. Mary was a teacher and homemaker who was very social and outgoing. She played bridge with several groups, read avidly, and happily embraced the challenge of a novel recipe.

Both Mary and her husband Joe loved fishing on Lake George, socializing by the pool, and enthusiastically attended both the New York City Ballet and the races in Saratoga. Mary was up for any adventure. She brought her ready laugh, sharp jokes, and conviviality to many gatherings. She took special delight in good stories and jokes. Throughout her long illness, she kept her characteristic lighthearted spirit.

Michael V. Ferraro Obituary 2024 - Applebee Funeral Home 08/07/2024

Michael V. Ferraro

Michael Vincent Ferraro, age 45 of Wynantskill, NY, died on Saturday August 3 very suddenly and unexpectedly while vacationing with his family. Michael was known simply as Mike, ‘Raro, and when in trouble with his mom, his full legal name.

Mike was born in Syracuse, NY on February 14, 1979 to Vincent and Elizabeth Ferraro. Mike was the younger brother of his sister, Jill Ferraro. The family lived in East Syracuse, NY until moving to Delmar, NY in August 1983. Mike attended Slingerlands Elementary School, Bethlehem Central Middle School, and graduated from Bethlehem Central High school in 1997. He attended some college at SUNY Oswego and HVCC. As a kid Mike played soccer, played Tri-Village Little League, played piano and drums, and made lots and lots of friends.

Mike met the love of his life, Amber Lee Pawlikowski, in 2006 while working in the produce section at the Glenmont Price Chopper; she was “his” barista at Starbucks there, their eyes met one day and the rest is history. They were married May 5, 2012 at Sunny Hill Resort and Golf Course in Greenville NY. On July 20, 2019, Mike and Amber became parents to their baby girl and little wonder, Anneliese Willow.

Mike worked for UPS for 14 years in addition to Price Chopper before landing full time employment with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles where he was promoted quite a few times before achieving his most recent role as a Highway Safety Program Analyst. Mike was also made honorary football champion of his fantasy football league by his friends just after his passing.

Mike had a zest for life like no other; he LIVED and LOVED and had a very vibrant soul. This was evident in all aspects of his life from his boisterous laugh and unmatched sense of humor, to his love for being out on the water, through his group chats with his many many friends, his appreciation of hazy IPA’s and dedication to rating them on Untapped, traveling anywhere and everywhere to see Phish or any live music show, golfing, fantasy football and the 49ers…the list goes on.

As a friend recently said, Mike “lived and loved the loudest in the way he absolutely glowed when his eyes fell upon his three greatest loves: Amber, Anneliese, and Timber”. Everywhere Mike went, he ran into someone he knew, and always made a new friend. Mike was always so helpful, generous, willing to go the extra mile for anyone. A friend recently noted “Mike is an incredible spirit. He had a wonderful way of looking at life without complexity. He loves everyone. And he is kind. I hope we can bring a piece of that spirit into all of our lives as we move forward.”.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife Amber Ferraro and daughter Anneliese of Wynantskill, father Vincent Ferraro of Delmar NY, and sister Jill Elizabeth (Ferraro) Smith of Malta, NY. Mike is also survived by cousins Laurel Dwyer Gergerich (Garth) and their daughter Addy of Norton, MA, cousin Leia Dwyer of Watertown, MA, uncles Carmine Ferraro and Frank Fortunat of Hamburg, NJ, and uncle Robert Dwyer of Providence RI. Mike is also survived by his in-laws Mary and Garry Pawlikowski of Cold Brook, NY, brother in law Shane Pawlikowski and his wife Amy Wilk of New Fairfield, CT, brother in law Chad Pawlikowski, his wife Asia and their sons Kayden and Lucas of Yorkville, NY. In addition Mike is survived by the many many friends he has made over the years, as well as his beloved German Shepard, Timber.

Mike was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Conklin Ferraro in 2008, his aunt Ellen Dwyer in 2010, his maternal and paternal grandparents, and many dear close friends.

The family will receive visitors at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave. Delmar on Sunday August 11th from 4:00 to 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl. Delmar on Monday, August 12th at 10:00 am.

Interment will not be done at this time.

A reception will follow; details to be determined and will be posted on social media.

A Go Fund Me has been established for Amber and Anneliese and can be found at https://gofund.me/fa8df2b9. We want to thank Mike’s good friend Marty and his wife Carrie for establishing the Go Fund Me.

We want to thank everyone who has already donated and provided support in so many ways from providing food to mowing lawns to just being here and helping soothe and comfort us, and help us make plans. It is a testament to how much Mike was loved and will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, go see a live music concert, raise a drink to Mike, and enjoy the show. Mike always loved a good shindig.

Carol A. Cohen Obituary 2024 - Applebee Funeral Home 07/29/2024

Carol A. Cohen

Carol Ann Cohen, 83, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on July 27, 2024. It was her 61st wedding anniversary.

Carol was born on March 9, 1941, to Kathleen Lewis and Harry Meinke in Brooklyn, New York, but she grew up in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. She leaves behind much-loved older siblings, Peter Meinke and Pat Bowen. She attended Skidmore College, Class of ‘63, where she met her husband Henry W. Cohen, when he stepped in her birthday cake. Luckiest thing he ever did! That moment sparked a love affair that would last the rest of their lives. She captivated everyone she met with her gorgeous red hair, emerald eyes, and sparkling personality. She was the kind of woman you named your boat for, as Henry’s grandfather Milton Alexander discovered upon renaming his boat “The Carol Ann” soon after meeting her. She enjoyed going to the Saratoga Race Track, where even Sam the Bugler was charmed and would play her “Fly Me to the Moon.” She loved classical music, had an achingly beautiful soprano voice, and enjoyed being part of the Capital Hill Choral Society for many years, singing at the opening of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

But her most prized role was that of being a mother to Delia Cohen, Diane Cohen, Carrie Field (Henry Field), Peter Cohen, Brian Cohen (Theresa Cohen), and Matthew Sharratt. She was the quintessential mother: loving, nurturing, always putting her children first in her thoughts and actions. When you entered her home, her cry of “Welcome!” would always ring out. Everyone congregated at her house after school, where she gave out homemade cookies or brownies. She always put a loving note in with her children’s lunches. She made every holiday and birthday special, beginning traditions all her children and grandchildren cherish. She was ever entertaining, whether making snow angels or imitating MC Hammer rapping. She loved to read, do the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle with Henry, and snuggle with her cat, Barnie (named for the annual family vacation to Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island), and just when you were least suspecting, she’d toss out a zinger, and make you laugh until tears ran down your face. In 1986, faced with all the girls soon leaving and being left with two boys and her husband, Carol decided she needed to learn about sports. So, she started rooting for the Giants and the Mets, who won the Super Bowl and the World Series that year. She became a die-hard fan.

Although she had retinitis pigmentosa, which ultimately led to total blindness, she never let that stop her and learned how to cook and take care of her grandchildren (Jack Field, Kate Field, Griffin Field, Lewis Cohen, Henry Cohen, and Jack McCafferty) despite not being able to see. She was beloved by all who were lucky enough to know her.

A private celebration of her life will be held by her family.

Donations in her memory can be made to: The Foundation Fighting Blindness (www.fightingblindness.org) or The Community Hospice, which took such good care of her during her last weeks (www.communityhospice.org).

Wendy L.W. Brandow Obituary 2024 - Applebee Funeral Home 07/26/2024

Wendy Brandow

Wendy Brandow

Harriet Lansing Woodward Brandow, known all her life as “Wendy,” passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday morning, July 24, 2024. Wendy was born in Albany on December 7, 1935, the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Ackroyd and Louis L. Woodward. She was a graduate of St. Agnes School Class of 1953 and briefly attended Bennett College in Dutchess County. Shortly after marrying John Brandow in 1959, the two moved to Alabama when John was stationed at Redstone Army Airbase. During those years Wendy worked for Boeing Aeronautics, often serving as a courier because she was considered so fleet-of-foot. From the early 1980s until 1996, Wendy worked as secretary for her husband’s law practice in Albany.

Throughout her long life, Wendy was a committed volunteer for numerous organizations. She was active during the St. Agnes/Kenwood merger that created Doane Stuart, where she went on to chair both the PTA and Alumni Association, and served on the school’s Board of Directors. She was a charter member of the Bethlehem Historical Society, where she volunteered for more than four decades. As parishioner of St. Andrew’s Church for more than seven decades, Wendy was known for her tireless service and organizational skills. In 1979 she founded “The Shop” at Saint Andrew’s and continued to volunteer there until last year. She also volunteered weekly at the Cathedral of All Saints’ Thrift Store.

Wendy was both dauntless and easy going, making many longtime friends through her various endeavors. Arranging outings or group lunches with friends, and doing whatever needed to be done for the groups for which she volunteered, kept her busy in the later years. Wendy always relished family vacations and spending time by the ocean with her family and dogs. From childhood onward, she loved animals of all kinds, and welcomed many pets and rescued animals into her home.

Wendy is survived by her devoted children, Katherine “Katie” Brandow, Margaret “Magi” Thayer (Tyler Thayer), and William “Bill” Brandow (Jessica Neidl), and her favorite (and only) granddaughter, Phaedra Thayer, who could not have asked for a better “Amma.” Wendy was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, John E. Brandow, and her beloved big brothers, Austin “Woody” and Louis “Ted” Woodward. In addition to her children and granddaughter, she is survived by many nieces and nephews and a wide circle of dear friends, as well as her dog and stalwart companion, Max. Wendy was widely admired for the energy and enthusiasm she brought to her various civic engagements, and she will be missed by all.

Calling hours will be at Applebee’s Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, July 30. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 31 at 10 am at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 10 North Main Ave., Albany.

Interment, Albany Rural Cemetery.

Kathryn D. Campion Obituary 2024 - Applebee Funeral Home 07/25/2024

Kathryn D. Campion

Kathryn Ilene (Dunn) Campion, “Kathy”, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving husband and sons on July 25th, 2024 at age 65. Born in Dedham, MA to Irene Dunn and the late John Dunn, Kathy enjoyed early life in the Boston suburbs with her older brother Terry and younger sister Maureen where she attended numerous Boston sporting events and beach trips to Cape Cod. Kathy graduated from Dedham High School in 1976 and enrolled at Boston College where she majored in teaching and second languages, becoming fluent in both Spanish and French. Kathy then started an adventurous life journey of traveling to European countries to immerse herself in these languages and cultures. During her post-college days of traveling and teaching, she met and fell in love with Patrick Parker Campion of Albany, NY.

Kathy and Pat began building their lives together living in New Hampshire before getting married in Cape Cod in 1984 and eventually settling into a home in Delmar, NY. In 1989, Kathy and Pat welcomed their first born son, Patrick, after Kathy had begun teaching Spanish and French at Mohanasen Middle School and then Bethlehem Middle School. At Bethlehem, Kathy would go on to build a second family of amazing teachers, administrators, and students that she cherished with all her heart. In 1994, Kathy and Pat welcomed their second son, Bradford, and enjoyed raising their two boys alongside great neighbors, friends, and family throughout the Albany area.

Kathy loved taking her boys and their friends to endless soccer games, ski trips, waterparks, and any other activity to enjoy life. Kathy was never scared of an adrenaline filled moment, having frequently ridden roller coasters with her boys, going cliff jumping in the Adirondacks, surfing in Cape Cod, and even ziplining with her mother and brother in Costa Rica just several months ago.

After an amazing teaching career of 32 years, Kathy retired in 2019 and got to spend more time traveling and sharing laughs with her friends in Albany and family in Massachusetts. She touched thousands of lives through her passion for other languages and appreciated all the love and support everyone sent her over the last few months as she battled pancreatic cancer. Kathy enjoyed getting up early in the morning to read a book, sip a cup of coffee, have a muffin, and sit with the family’s dogs over the years (Casey, Shelby, Cody). She carried a compassionate spirit and a strong Catholic faith throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and community.

Kathy is predeceased by her father, John Dunn, and is survived by her husband, Patrick Campion, and her sons, Patrick and Brad and Brad’s wife Meghan Campion; and her mother, Irene Dunn, her sister Maureen Hall (Dunn) and brother-in-law Bucky Hall, and brother Terry Dunn and sister-in-law Maura Dunn. She was a loving sister-in-law and aunt to dozens of nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00am, Friday, August 9, 2024 at St. Thomas The Apostle Church 35 Adams Pl. Delmar, NY.

Eleanor U. Digeser Obituary 2024 - Applebee Funeral Home 07/24/2024

Eleanor U. Digeser

New Scotland - Eleanor Ursula Digeser lived in the hope of eternal life in Christ and passed away on July 19, 2024. Loved and loving wife of Henry, Eleanor was also a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Eleanor is survived by her four children: Hank (Nancy) Digeser; Paige (Beth) Digeser; Ann (David) Miele; Sue (Billy) Stebbins; her eight grandchildren: Mathieu (Jenna) Digeser; Robert (Carley) Digeser; Drew (Alexa) Digeser; Amy (Brian) Brownell; Katherine (Daniel) Rice; Sarah Miele; Elizabeth Miele; Nicholas Stebbins; 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was predeceased by her husband (Henry), her six sisters (Catherine, Anna, Martha, Domie, Theresa, Gert) and one brother (Jackie). She worked for a number of years at the General Electric plant in Pittsfield where she met her future husband. She had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and an uncanny ability to sense when something was wrong. She did not take seriously those who held position or power. Such individuals would usually prompt a response from her of “big deal.” Yet, she was proud of the accomplishments of her husband, her children and her grandchildren.

When she was able, Eleanor loved to travel with her family, especially to beaches. She also made trips to Europe and went to Rome with her husband for the Great Jubilee year of 2000. Her most memorable trips, however, were with her grandchildren. When she was not travelling, she lived at Sleepy Hollow Lake where she would sometimes observe that there was nothing like living next to water.

With unbounded love, Eleanor cherished her family. She raised four children and in one way or another helped to raise another two generations. She was not a joiner of groups, but when she was alone, she was never lonely. She loved to read. Despite being a very private person, she always enjoyed a cup of coffee and a good conversation with her friends. She was a great listener and had the unique ability to walk away with the life story of any individual that she had just met. She was so well loved because she always was more interested in learning about you. She was the kindest, most thoughtful, most generous person you could know.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities, 40 N. Main Ave., Ste. 1, Albany, NY 12203, www.ccrcda.org/give-help/donate-online/
