Lauren Cutts
My work goes through techniques of smearing realism portraits to explore the imaginary. I was born in 1997 and grew up in North Texas.
Art became my outlet during a turbulent upbringing. In high school, I experimented with various dry mediums like pastel chalk, colored pencil, and charcoal to express my emotions. I was drawn to using unconventional colors on everyday subjects, especially portraits and the emotions conveyed through the eyes. I pursued my passion by starting at Tarrant Community College and later earning my Bachelo

The crescent moon shape is created from a shadow & reflection of light from the sun. Representing balance once you embrace your shadow side to live a bold life. The blend of the moon to the face & movement of the smears show that it is apart of who she is…Into The Blue Moon.
Incredibly proud of how well this print turned out. Photographing such dark colors + complex shades of blue are tedious & time consuming but was so worth it.

Current work in progress. After vs before. I’m not sure why I’ve been obsessed with feeling my fear before I smear my oil paintings but I can’t stop. Maybe it’s a representation of my own way of being bold from a life of being afraid to be seen. Maybe it’s a passion of healing a world that rewards unrealistic perfection rather than the beauty of imperfection and how the confidence of imperfection is what creates the life you want that you see in “perfection”. Maybe it’s me trying to be more playful and display a visual representation of letting go. There are so many possible “whys” but what really matters is that I’m obsessed with it and obsession creates art.

Lucy’s portrait is 1 out of 6 in my series painting YOU.
Getting an accurate depiction of the color for this painting has been quite the experiment 🥹 but well worth it. Swipe to see in photo 2. Wanted to make sure you can see the slight purple variation through the blue that you can see in person.

No matter how hard you try, you’ll always be wrong in the eyes of others. Not say enough or say too much. Too quiet, too loud.
This is a play on the negative comments I have gotten over the last year.
I’ve hid myself through my life. Quiet; blend in. Never going for it in fear of opinions. I’m sure many others have lived life this way, too. While I had big dreams to make an impact on people’s lives since very young, just never knew how I’d do it. Trauma wound of not feeling heard made me want to make art to help others feel seen. Including myself. Then came the last semester of senior year of undergrad where I took Jim’s advice of “don’t be afraid to f**k it up” literal. It clicked.
Getting so many negative comments made me want to try to please them all. Then it made me mad because I was taking on their own self reflection. I refuse to play it small. That’s never who I’ve been. I will be odd, annoying, psycho, trying too hard, explain too much, contradicting, whoever you view me as. The last thing I will be is mean to others. Truthfully, I don’t give a damn anymore what others think I’m doing wrong. I’m not perfect and never will be.
Let’s start 2024 taking our power back and being who ever the f**k we want.
‘Self Portait’ Oil on canvas. 20” x 20”. 2023.

What I’m working on. Stay with me, the last layer tomorrow will make it all come together…then we smear!
‘The Time Is Now’ touches on spirituality and growth. Greatly inspired by the renaissance depictions of angels. Renaissance, a French word, means re-birth, new beginning. Two figures smeared in different directions yet joining together in the center signifies the understanding and acceptance of the guardian above giving confirmation that it is time to go forward in the new change, re-birth, new beginning. The All knowing. Often times we have resistance to change within ourselves. Once we accept and flow, we grow. We go through many of these lifetimes in one.

I cannot stop staring at this hand/jacket on my current project. The colors are so ethereal. Looking at it makes me feel the same way as the riff in Oblivius by The Strokes (reference sound is included)

It’s magic to deconstruct something to create something even better. To believe in yourself. Maybe less magic, more perseverance but you know what I mean ;)

My favorite moment after finishing the smear tonight🎊 sanding down and redoing was such a good decision. A lil teary eyed at how much I love this painting so far + the amount of work that has been put into this piece.
One more layer of detail after this! Will share the smearing video soon 🫶🏻

‘Form Into’ is a visual representation of embracing all parts of ourselves. True acceptance of past versions. In that, finding power to create a stronger you.
Incredibly tedious process. Sharp lines with the organic subject matter is going to contrast but compliment each other so well! Reveal reel coming soon! Here’s to the series of celebrating powerful women!
Sneak peak into the smear I just did. Two figures. Too excited about the result. Can’t wait to go back in and re-render and add wings!
This is one of those paintings that you flow with. Combining two photos together to add to my winged women series. Two more paintings to this series left!
Black on this print compliments the painting so well.
‘We Know’ is SOLD but do not fret, prints are available for $40 on my website (laurenbonham.art)
Printed on luster paper.
Seeing my prints all together that give off an overall theme is so satisfying. Once an original sells to go to it’s new home, having a print of my own is so valuable. Offering the same option for others because fine art is for everyone and should be affordable when possible.

It’s not that serious and never has been that serious. My response when someone says I messed up my painting or the importance of preserving paintings when I try to make a statement about perfection. Reminder: nothing is real.

Color theory is difficult, it takes me an hour alone to mix paint. This is why original paintings are priced high. It takes a lot of experience + trail & error. Pretty proud of this in progress piece due to the complex colors. Stay updated on the smearing of this piece!

Moving Forward. Oil on Rives BFK Paper. 15 x 22 in., 2023.
The piece and prints are available on the main page of https://laurenbonham.art/
I’m on YouTube now! I’ve been planning this for awhile before the possible tiky toky ban. Longer form content is where I’ve always wanted but hasn’t due to imposter syndrome LOL. I did my hand at it when I was 18 in 2016 to show my art but felt like people didn’t care. (Don’t we all think that way?) Follow me @/laurenbonham I hope to post more insight on my process on there. As well as other parts of me that is not just art ;) I have many passions I’d like to share including sculptural experimental pieces, etc.
