launched their Kentucky 95/5 rye today and I had chance to try it out. Big strawberry Pop Tart nose, surprising and robust caramel palate, all with a finish that just don't quit. It's a really impressive expression especially given its $35 price tag. Green River products continue to impress and I'm excited to see what they do next! Go check this one out! Cheers!

Couldn't find our picks for whiskies of the year? Well we offer up some alternatives on Episode 64: Best In Class Alternates - live now - link in bio, Spotify, iTunes, and anywhere you can find a podcast!

Here are our 2023 alternate winners:

Bourbon: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C923
Rye: Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye
Scotch: GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 11
Irish: Redbreast PX

We also drink Barrel Aged Malort and offer a handful of our favorite whiskies from each category.

12/19/2023

Last but not least is our 2023 Scotch of the Year - the Signet. This expression smells and tastes like classic Glenmorangie at first, but after an initial sip espresso and chocolate Malt flavors dominate the nose and the rest of the drinking experience. It's a truly dynamic pour that Scotch and coffee fans will love.

Don't forget to checkout our Best In Class 2023 Episode - link in bio, iTunes, Spotify, and anywhere you can find a podcast! Also stay tuned for our Debrief episode where we share all of our other favorite whiskies from the year!

Cheers and keep drinkin' tasty whiskies.

12/18/2023

We're thrilled to announce our Bourbon of the Year 2023: the .wine & single barrel! This expression takes everything we know and love from Bardstown's estate aged Origins series and amplifies it to a big 128.4 proof that showcases unrivaled and explosive bourbon flavors. This is one whiskey I describe as "laughably good" because when I first tried it, I actually stopped drinking it, started laughing, and couldn't believe how incredible the flavors were. I think there is some debate around awarding a single barrel because it will be hard to find this exact expression, but at the same time it sets the precedent for more phenomenal barrels to come and showcases how good they can be. This bottle was awarded a 9.5 from Mike and a 9.4 from Devin. Also if Discovery 11 from Bardstown isn't on your radar yet, it should be. It was my highest rated whiskey of the year at 9.8, but we opted to give Bourbon of the Year to this single barrel due to its availability and price point of about $79.

Today is the two year anniversary of Bardstown's World's Top Whiskey Taster competition and what better way to remember it than to celebrate our favorite bourbon of the year which just so happens to come from Bardstown Bourbon Company as well. Bardstown has the best people making the best whiskies and we can't wait to see what they do next!

Cheers and keep drinkin' tasty whiskies!

12/17/2023

We're thrilled to continue our Best In Class 2023 spree and share our budget pick of the year - the Bonded Rye!

Jack Daniel's ryes have been fantastic and we have their Single Barrel Barrel Proof rye as an alternate for Rye of the Year, but for about $30 the Bonded Rye packs incredible value with great flavors that allow this expression to stand on its own and punch through in cocktails. This bottle is almost gone, but luckily these are available and don't put a huge dent in the wallet!

Of course our budget winners are still around from previous years so if you need a whiskey that punches way outside of its weight class then look no further than here, at Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, Wild Turkey 101 bourbon and rye.

Cheers and keep drinking tasty whiskies!

12/15/2023

Continuing on with our Best In Class week - we're excited to announce our winner for the Best Irish Whiskey category: Kinnitty Castle Cider Cask Finish Single Malt Irish Whiskey!

Price increases from legacy brands have driven us to explore new expressions in Irish Whiskey. Luckily we are living in the Irish Whiskey Renaissance and finding new brands that are doing unique things is easy to do. Enter Kinnitty Castle Spirits, a new brand founded by veteran Bryan Bean and his partners who bought a Castle in Ireland and started their own distillery (talk about living the dream).

The Cider Cask is about 4 years old and finished in hard apple cider casks for 6 months. The result is a unique expression that showcases the harmonious marriage of Irish whiskey (a big ol' scoop of vanilla ice cream type flavors) and delectable boozy apple cider notes that are perfect for fall. We can't remember another Whiskey that we talked more about after trying, we loved sharing during the holidays, and that sparked a great conversation with a super charismatic owner. Robust on the nose, palate, and finish along with being an easy drinking and sessionable whiskey, the Cider Cask scored a 9.5 from Devin and a 9.2 from Mike. Not to mention this can be found for around $50 making it an approachable and economical option.

We're thrilled to award this expression with our 2023 Irish Whiskey of the Year!

Cheers and keep drinkin' tasty whiskies!

12/14/2023

We're so excited to announce our Whiskey of the Year from our Best In Class 2023 episode and feature it here:

The Peated Rye Whiskey. This is a blend of four lightly charred barrels and is bottled at natural cask strength. The result is a beautiful marriage of robust flavors where classic rye notes intermingle with bright citrus and smoke. This expression offers something so unique that cannot be found elsewhere and perfectly bridges the gap between American rye whiskies and Islay Scotch. Congratulations to the Liberty Pole Spirits team for winning our Rye of the Year and ultimately winning Whiskey of the Year. Their Peated Rye Whiskey scored a 9.7 out of 10 from our team for an unrivaled and unique drinking experience from start to finish, dynamic flavors throughout, a nose with so much to unpack, a long lingering fruit punch to***co finish, and an approachable price of $64. This is a stunning expression and we can't wait to see what Liberty Pole does next.

Stay tuned for more featured winners from our Best In Class 2023 episode!

Cheers and keep drinkin' tasty whiskies!

We're excited to announce that Episode 61 of All Things Whiskey Podcast is live now!

On this episode Hosts Mike Outcalt and Devin Mitchell welcome Dr. Tom Collins - Jackson Family Wines Endowed Professor of Viticulture and Enology at Washington State University to talk about his research; the impact barrels have on wines and spirits, and how certain levels of dilution in spirits can make them smell and taste the same. Dr. Collins is an expert in distillation practices which he has been studying in his chemistry lab since 2015 to determine how the char and toast levels inside barrels filter harsher components of whiskey and other spirits while aiming to understand the chemistry behind this process. More recently Dr. Collins has studied a close link between the aroma and taste of whiskies to determine how a certain level of dilution can make whiskies smell the same and further dilution can make whiskies taste the same. Additionally we discuss the demand for new barrels, used barrels, barrel alternatives, and sustainability initiatives around barrels in the spirits industry. We then open up the conversation to talk about Dr. Collins' favorite whiskies, brands, spirits, and discuss the future of his research.

Don't miss this episode - it is a great opportunity to learn about barrel, taste, and aroma science behind the spirits that we know and love.

Thanks again to our guest Dr. Collins! Cheers and enjoy!

Damn damn damn delicious stuff! I think I found my favorite Blanco Tequila ever with this bottle of Lot 150. and I were lucky to find this one in La Zona Romantica en Puerto Vallarta and we've been drinking it almost exclusively on our honeymoon. It's not going to last long, but luckily we've got a backup. The flavors are so bright, the mouthfeel is unrivaled, and the finish lasts forever.

¡Salud!

Exhibit A) how it started - a good 20ish bottles circa 2018
Exhibit B) the over 300 open bottles in the next 4 pictures

We started at the bottom and now I have no money because it all went to whiskey and podcasting.

Just reordered some sample bottles cause this is getting out of control yall.

I'm excited to announce that Episode 57 of All Things Whiskey Podcast is now live! Link in bio, iTunes, Spotify, and anywhere you can find a podcast!

It's been a while since Devin and I fired up the mics so that's exactly what we did in this blind tasting challenge. First we review the Freezer Door Old Fashioned, a batched cocktail recipe that our buddy inspired us to make. Then Devin gets 🎶Blinded by the Mike🎶 (be sure to sing that to the tune of Blinded by the Light) to prove a point about mashbills and how we classify whiskey.

Last but not least, we're giving away a bottle of Heaven Hill 7 year to patrons only so checkout the overhauled patreon page and stay tuned for more info.

We had a blast and hope you do too - cheers!
