A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something.
Frank Capra
When he was in his early 20s, chemical engineer Frank Capra was working odd jobs near San Francisco, such as pruning fruit trees and selling books door to door. Then he saw a 1922 newspaper ad: Workers were needed at a gymnasium to help adapt a Rudyard Kipling poem into a silent short film. With confidence, Capra — who had grown up in Los Angeles but had no cinematic ties — told the production he was from Hollywood, nabbing his first directorial gig, en route to helming several classic films. By the following decade’s end, he had won three Best Director Oscars, for "It Happened One Night" (1934), "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936), and "You Can't Take It With You" (1938). And 1946 saw the release of perhaps his most enduring and beloved film, "It's a Wonderful Life." Capra urged people to follow their instincts, regardless of their past experience. Curiosities should be pursued, for every half-formed idea has the potential to become a work of art.

Steve Jobs

Some might look at Steve Jobs’ early career and label him foolish. The future Apple co-founder was known as a school prankster, initially dropping out of college despite obvious intelligence. But his curiosity led him to garage tinkering with computers along with his high school classmate Steve Wozniak, and they founded Apple Computers shortly after. Though Jobs was squeezed out of the company early on, his return in the 1990s — and the innovation that followed — is considered the main driver behind Apple’s current reign over the tech world. Jobs’ path serves as a beacon to those of us whose creativity may not fit the mold. What some consider foolish may actually lead us to our best ideas and richest experiences.

Progress is not possible without deviation.
Frank Zappa
Fittingly, this quote comes from the guitarist whose influence spurred a band called the Soul Giants to become known as the Mothers of Invention. Frank Zappa assumed leadership of the rock group in 1965, after his predecessor suggested that they could only make money by playing covers. The fundamental goal of Zappa’s career was to create original music — when he died at age 52 in 1993, he had released more than 60 albums as a collaborator or soloist. The Baltimore-born artist proudly identified as a “freak” and regarded complacency as the biggest threat to creativity and the American citizenry. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer believed progress depended on originality, and that a willingness to deviate from the norm could inspire others to do the same.
