Founded in 1889, Schumacher has been “inspiring the design-obsessed” for over 135 years with innovative, bold, uncommonly beautiful textiles and pre-made home goods. They think of themselves as the ultimate resource for high-end designer fabric, wallpaper, trim, and furniture — we agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. Although the Denver showroom has only been around for a year, we’ve had our eye on Schumacher for a while and have incorporated their beautiful creations into many of our interior design projects. Naturally, featuring the brand in our Shop Talk series was a must.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Megan, Managing Director of the Rocky Mountain region, to discuss all things Schumacher, from their rich history to upcoming collaborations. Recently completed by Atelier Interior Design: Earthy Mountain Oasis in Morrison, CO ⛰️

Pristine white walls awaited us at this new build and our mission was to create a living space with warmth while embracing a colorful palette. At the heart of the design lies a custom TV shelving unit in a hue that echoes the earthy allure of the rug. A standout piece, the curved olive green sofa brings unique shape and color to the space, complemented by the coffee table and a sleek black leather chair. Styling shelves to balanced perfection is a task that seems so simple, but isn't always. To achieve the look:

⚡ Note Spacing & Height: How much space do you need to fill up and how tall can you go with your decor? It’s essential to include items that are tall enough to avoid leaving too much air above the items before your next shelf (or ceiling) starts.

⚡ Don't Include the Same Number of Items on Each Shelf: The secret to creating balance with shelving decor is to NOT include the same number of items on each shelf. This may not sound like “balance”, but it is. The balance is created by having each shelf vary slightly.

⚡ Jazz it Up: Shelves are not meant for just family photos or books - although these items do have a place. Mix it up by throwing in a funky lamp or a cool sculpture.

⚡ Always Edit: Style your shelves then take a few steps back and take in how they feel and look. Too cluttered? Take a few things away and then re-evaluate. Is an item too short? Remove it and replace it with something else. You’ll know when you've landed on the perfect styling.

Bonus tip: the task will seem less daunting if you look at it as a creative, fun activity. Remember, nothing is permanent so, have fun and test your creative skills.
