When should your child have their first eye exam?
Eye doctors recommend that children have their first eye exam at six months of age to ensure that their eyes are developing normally.
It is important for an eye doctor to monitor their ocular health and development of the visual function. If your child does not need any vision correction, you can follow this schedule!
Welcome to the world sweet baby boy! Dr. O’Brien gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Monday, August 5! He arrived at 10:06 pm, weighing exactly 8lbs and was 19.25 inches long! We are so excited to welcome our newest Denver Eye Care baby!!
Most pediatricians and many schools conduct vision screenings to identify any vision problems that may affect a child’s ability to learn. But what is the difference between a vision screening and a comprehensive eye exam at an optometrist's office?
A Vision Screening is a brief screening performed by a primary care provider, school nurse, or trained volunteer and typically only uses an eye chart to test distance visual acuity. There is also very little, if any, testing done to detect the presence of ocular health issues.
A Comprehensive Eye Exam is a thorough exam, using high-quality optical equipment and is performed by a licensed optometrist. They have the ability to look at the back of the eye using Optos photos or pupil dilation along with assessing refractive status to determine nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. The optometrist will also diagnose and treat any ocular health issues and keep their prescription up-to-date.
Did you know...
Worms do not have eyes but they can sense light, especially at their anterior (front end). They move away from light and will become paralyzed if exposed to light for too long.

While cataracts are a relatively common condition, most people know very little about it. Here are five surprising facts you may not know about cataracts.
Happy National Sunglasses Day from your favorite eye care professionals! Make sure you are sporting the best sunglasses today and all summer long! Need a new pair? Stop by and visit us to get an updated pair!
While cataracts are not 100% preventable, there are some things you can do to lower your risk of developing cataracts!
How do cataracts affect your vision? The main symptom is blurry vision. Having cataracts can be like looking through a cloudy window. When a cataract gets bad enough that is begins to interfere with your day to day life and activities, the cloudy lens can be surgically replaced with a clear, artificial lens.
We are so excited to introduce you to Dr. Owens sweet baby girl! She arrived yesterday, June 20, 2024 at 11:12 am, weighing in at 7lbs 10oz and 20.5 inches long. Both mom and baby girl are doing fabulous!
Dr. Owens, who will officially be joining our practice in August, is at the hospital waiting to welcome her little girl to the world! Lets all send happy thoughts and wishes for a safe and speedy delivery! ❤️
Here are just a few early signs that you may notice if you have or are developing cataracts. Of course, the only guaranteed way to know is to see your eye doctor, so it is important to keep up with your annual eye exams!
Sleeping in your contacts can put stress on your cornea and limit how much oxygen gets to your eye. Eventually, this can lead to open sores (ulcers) on your cornea. These ulcers can permanently and severely damage your vision. Untreated, they can even lead to blindness. So make sure you are taking those contacts out every night!
June is Cataract Awareness Month. We hear that word a lot, especially as we age, but do we really know what a cataract is, what causes it, how it affects our vision? Stay tuned this month to learn all about cataracts!
Happy Wacky Wednesday!
We all know there are sunglasses out there in all shapes and colors! But not all sunglasses provide UV protection! Make sure your sunglass lenses are polarized and have 100% UVA and UVB blocking in them! We would love to help you pick out the perfect pair of sunglasses for the summer... stop by anytime to work with one of our wonderful optical members!
Now that summer break is officially upon us, make sure those kiddos have good sun protection for their eyes when they are outside playing. Sun and UV exposure is especially harmful to children's eyes because they are still developing and their lenses aren't able to filter UV light as effectively as adults' eyes can. So grab some sunglasses for those little ones and have fun this summer!
We are closed today in observance of Memorial Day. We will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday. Have a safe and happy holiday!
What better time to go online and book your next eye appointment? We have openings as early as Wednesday, May 29! We would love to SEE you soon!!

People often associate UV damage with skin cancer, but prolonged exposure to UV can increase the risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on the eye, including cancer. All of these can ultimately lead to blindness. Unlike skin damage, which can often be visible in the form of burns or wrinkles, you may not notice damage to your eyes until you are older.
