Women’s Equality Day, celebrated on August 26th, commemorates a pivotal moment in the fight for gender equality in the United States: the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. This amendment, ratified on August 18, 1920, marked a significant step toward equality but was just one part of a broader struggle that continues today.
The Fight for Women’s Suffrage
The battle for women’s suffrage was long and arduous, involving decades of activism, including protests, lobbying, marches, and civil disobedience. Suffragists used diverse strategies, from passing state suffrage laws to challenging male-only voting in courts and engaging in direct actions like picketing and hunger strikes.
Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul were key leaders in this movement. Catt, as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), developed the “Winning Plan”...

10 Essential Tips for Supporting a Grieving Child
1. Communicate Clearly
Use age-appropriate language to help the child understand what has happened. Clear, simple explanations encourage them to ask questions and express their feelings, setting the stage for healthy communication.
2. Be Honest and Open
Children appreciate honesty, even in difficult situations. Be transparent in your conversations and allow them to ask questions, even if the answers are tough. This openness fosters trust and can lead to important, healing discussions.
3. Maintain Consistency
During times of grief, children benefit from structure and routine. Maintaining rules and boundaries helps them feel secure and provides a sense of normalcy amidst the changes in their lives.
4. Listen with Empathy
Empathetic listening is key to supporting a grieving child. Allow them to share their thoughts and feelings without interruption, validating their emotions and showing that you are truly there for them.
5. Affirm Their Emotions
Children may experience a range of emotions that can be confusing or overwhelming. Affirm that these feelings—whether sadness, anger, or confusion—are normal and okay to have. Reassure them that there’s no right or wrong way to grieve.
6. Encourage Creative Outlets
Creative activities, such as drawing, journaling, or crafting, provide children with a safe way to express their grief.
7. Share and Celebrate Memories
Help the child remember their loved one by sharing stories, looking through photos, or listening to favorite songs.
8. Offer Supportive Resources
Books about grief can be valuable tools for children. Select age-appropriate books that address loss and read them together, using them as a way to spark meaningful conversations and understanding.
9. Participate in a Support Group
Consider involving the child in a grief support group designed specifically for children.
10. Prepare Them for the Funeral
Funerals can be intense and overwhelming, especially for children. Prepare them by explaining what to expect and discussing their feelings about attending.
Helping Children Cope with Grief: A Compassionate Approach
Grief is a complex emotion, and when it comes to children, it requires a delicate and thoughtful approach. Children process loss differently than adults, and understanding their unique needs is essential to helping them navigate this challenging time. Below are some strategies to support a grieving child, each designed to foster healing and provide comfort.
1. Listen Attentively
One of the most important things you can do for a grieving child is to...

While this is not an exhaustive list, it is a good place to start. Abusive behavior is often meted out lightly and sporadically at first, making it hard to detect. It can seem like an occasional irregularity in behavior or a “bad mood.” However, it is imperative not to dismiss early warning signs. The abuse will continue, and it will increase in frequency and severity. As it becomes more and more destructive, it can become much more confusing. This might sound counterintuitive, but it is all part of an abuser’s ability to exert power and control. If you have even the slightest inkling that you are in a relationship that is veering toward intimate partner violence, immediately and confidentially contact the Domestic Violence Hotline 800-799-7233 and ask for guidance. Do not wait. Trust your gut.

🌟 July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month 🌟
This month, we pay respect to the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities. Mental health is a vital part of our overall well-being, yet many individuals from various cultural backgrounds encounter barriers to accessing the care and support they need. These barriers can include cultural stigma, lack of representation in mental health professions, and systemic inequalities.
At STOP COVAD, we believe that everyone deserves compassionate, culturally competent mental health care. It’s crucial to recognize that mental health issues don’t discriminate – they can affect anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background.
💬 Let’s start the conversation:
1️⃣ Educate Yourself: Learn about the mental health challenges specific to minority communities. Understanding the cultural context is the first step to empathy.
2️⃣ Support and Listen: If someone in your life opens up about their mental health struggles, listen without judgment and offer your support. Sometimes, knowing someone cares can make all the difference.
3️⃣ Advocate for Change: Use your voice to advocate for mental health policies that address systemic inequalities. Support organizations that are working towards better mental health access for minority communities.
Remember, your mental health matters! If you or someone you know needs support, don’t hesitate to reach out. STOP COVAD exists, in part, to be a resource for essential services!

experienced a traumatic event, from military veterans to survivors of accidents, natural disasters, or personal assaults.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder isn’t just about reliving trauma; it can fundamentally alter the way someone interacts with the world. Symptoms include intense flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. But there’s another side to PTSD that we need to talk about—its potential to lead to violent behavior.
PTSD can cause individuals to experience heightened states of arousal and irritability, making them feel constantly on edge. This heightened state, combined with the difficulty in controlling anger and frustration, can sometimes result in aggressive outbursts or violent actions. It’s crucial to understand that this is not because the individual is inherently violent, but because their trauma has rewired their brain’s response to stress and perceived threats.
Many people with PTSD may also struggle with substance abuse as they attempt to self-medicate their symptoms, further exacerbating the risk of violent behavior. This doesn’t mean everyone with PTSD will become violent, but it highlights the importance of providing appropriate support and treatment.
Awareness and education are key to supporting those with PTSD. Here’s what you can do:

STOP COVAD was founded on the belief that violence and discrimination impact everyone. While certain groups may face these issues more severely or frequently, it’s crucial to recognize that, in reality, everyone in society is negatively affected by violence and discrimination.
Why does this matter? Ignoring violence or discrimination in any part of society allows these problems to grow unchecked. What might initially seem like a minor issue can escalate to dangerous levels if left unaddressed. To effectively combat violence and discrimination, we must understand that it affects each and every one of us.
Understanding discrimination in the United States 🇺🇸 | According to U.S. law, discrimination involves unfair or unequal treatment of individuals based on race, color, religion, s*x, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. This impacts many areas of life, including employment, housing, education, and access to public services. It’s crucial to recognize and combat these injustices to build a more inclusive and fair society. Join the fight for equality and stand up against discrimination today!
