Riyah Halverson, daughter of WWE Billing & AR Specialist Tina Halverson and her husband, Rick, had her wish granted by the Make a Wish Foundation in August. After winning a 10-month fight against osteosarcoma, a kind of bone cancer, and managing a full-knee and bone replacement, forward-thinking Riyah requested, and was granted, a full-ride scholarship to the Aveda Institute cosmetology school in Denver. Riyah will attend Aveda next summer after she graduates from Erie High School, and Aveda will generously provide all Riyah’s supplies for the 11-month program. Riyah plans to follow up the cosmetology training with a degree in psychology. Congratulations go to Riyah and the Halverson family for getting through an extremely tough year and cheers to Riyah’s very bright future!

WWE's Scott Schreiber participated in the Homestake Community Science Day on July 20. This full-day event provided hands-on exploration of wetlands in the Homestake Valley, near Minturn, which is home to incredible biodiversity, native flora and fauna, and numerous threatened species.

Community Science Day featured scientists from the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, naturalists from Walking Mountains Science Center, and other local experts like Scott. The event focused on a three-acre wetland area, where locals were taught to find, identify, and log many of the ecosystem’s more than 150 species. Scott’s role was to describe the impacts of a reservoir in a sensitive watershed and how it affects hydrology.

The educational event was sponsored by the Wilderness Workshop and Eagle River Coalition.

One of our staff members recently visited South Point on the Island of Hawaii, also known as Kamāoʻa-Puʻuʻeo. It is the southernmost tip of Hawaii and, therefore, the United States. A local legend says, in this area, divers would use coconut shells to collect fresh, potable water that filtered through porous lava rock and emerged deep in the ocean.

Did you know? Around the country, roughly 9 billion gallons of water are used on lawns every day. That is enough to fill over 13,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

In response to shockingly high irrigation rates, turf replacement is on the rise. Opting for a low-water garden can reduce water use rates by 50-75%. Furthermore, low-water gardens foster a healthy environment, reducing runoff and the use of chemical fertilizers. Additionally, one of the biggest perks is that low-water gardens require much less maintenance. Sounds like a win-win situation all around. Learn more here:
