🤯 Internet Coach Advice Correction 🤯

A big part of a PR agency’s job is securing companies, brands, and leaders earned speaking engagements at industry conferences. Those run by associations and such, like the one tagged in this post.

Speaking. Sessions. Are. Never. Paid. Only. The. Keynotes.

The entire business model is the benefit / credibility / thought leadership boost / sales potential from being a speaker in front of high quality audiences.

One of our CEO MALE clients was acquired and merged in a $750,000,000 deal, where he’s now the CEO of the new company - from one of these “free” speaking events. A panel at a telecom conference (where only keynote speakers are paid).

In fact he paid our team a significant investment year over year for us to be able to secure invitations for him that only come from your reputation. Not something that can be bought.

Companies. And. Male. And. Female. Executives. Pay. Us. Tens. To. Hundreds. Of. Thousands. To. Build. Them. Via. Earned. Speaking. Engagements.

Earned speaking engagements at reputable industry conferences are a huge deal. A foundation of the entire brand building industry.

This internet coach is projecting sexism where it doesn’t exist - leading women to alienate themselves with their ignorance of the process and its benefits for their reputation and growth.

If you are a woman who wants your business to grow, that happens much faster when you build a reputable speaking and thought leadership platform.

And stay cautious about whose advice you tune into. The internet gives everyone a voice. Not all voices know the truth to be able to lead you to it.

In today’s edition of how to start a PR Crisis meet 🔥Chick-fil-a Louisiana 🔥where 5-year-olds get to go to child labor camp.

Why is this not just a cute camp idea for kids who really love nuggets?

🤯 Commercialization of Childhood - Turning a summer camp into a fast-food training ground prioritizes corporate interests over the well-being and developmental needs of children. Childhood is time of learning and exploration free from commercial pressures.

🤯 Child Labor Trivialization - a summer camp that teaches children to perform fast-food jobs trivializes the serious issue of child labor. Child labor is a significant global problem that many organizations are working to eliminate. By presenting children as young as 5 working in a fast food restaurant as a fun activity for children, the camp diminishes the gravity of the issue and undermines efforts to combat child exploitation. It normalizes the idea that children can and should perform work typically reserved for adults, a precedent with dangeous psychological implications.

🤯 Child Exploitation - promoting parents pay for children as young as five to learn and perform tasks typically done by fast food employees blurs the lines between a fun, educational camp and exploiting children for commercial benefits.

We appreciate companies wanting to connect with the community in a meaningful way. There are so many ways to do that in authentic alignment with your community:

🐔 Lemonade Stand Support Van - send out a van with signage to find and support local lemonade stands, donating nuggets and lemonade to the young entrepreneurs. The community will do your PR for you for so considerate and integrated in authentic ways.

🐔 Community Garden Project - partner with local schools and community groups to create and maintain community gardens, teaching kids about gardening and healthy eating. Start with produce sold in your restaurants to keep it relevant… lettuce, tomatoes, kale. (Maybe this would lead to more menu nutrient diversity)

🐔 Summer Reading Initiative Support - schools and libraries do their best to get kids reading over the summer. HELP THEM. Host weekly reading events in partnership with local libraries and community parks where kids can enjoy storytime with a Chick-fil-a mascot and receive a free kids' meal.

🐔 Family Game Night - organize family game nights at local Chick-fil-A restaurants with board games, trivia contests, and small prizes. Emphasizing the benefit of, and create richer ways for, families to enjoy eating and playing together.

Bottom Line?

🔥 There are WAY better ways to build community connection than commercializing child labor. They may cost more than activities that double as a team training aid (another reason this whole camp is so cringe) but they engender community connection from a place of mutual benefit and respect - and that is the only way any company should be “touching” anybody.

Ethical Voices Podcast: Real Ethics Stories from Real PR Pros: The ethical challenges of weaponized communication – Elizabeth Edwards 08/31/2023

Applying Behavioral Economic principals without ethical boundaries must stop. It’s super effective to teach a kid fire is hot by burning their hand. Of course we don’t do it because it is amoral. Horrific. Abuse.

So too is the repetitive administration of pain messaging and behavioral techniques that only work due to the activation of fear. Behavioral Economics gives us a fascinating operating system understanding of human behavior. We can do better than to just push the red buttons 🛑❌‼️🛑

🎙️“We don’t always describe it this way, but communication exists to influence and change behavior. Whether it’s a tiny change in state of awareness, everything we’re doing is change.

We see a critical need for communication, both professional, institutional, and individual, to be considered through a lens of, how am I engaging others?

How am I engaging myself?

How am I engaging with respect to the agency of my audience, with respect to codes of civility?

What does that really mean?

We talk a lot about civility.

We talk a lot about being polite or being nice.

But what does it really mean to shift our language institutionally and individually in order to align with civility?

What are the specific actual practices, and not broad stroke things like being more empathetic.

But how do we specifically change our language?

As we study the science, we recognize the common theme. Rather than being combined with all the things we know from the sciences about how to engage people in a harmonious way to create organic, fluid, positive change - we’re seeing the use of some of these individual known scientific techniques to all but bludgeon people over the head.

Many of them are so based in fear motivation – pain, shame and very negative emotions.

Certain fields are hyper manufacturing and falsifying known behavior triggers like scarcity and urgency.

It is not right what it is doing to our employees, to our teams, to our audiences as marketers, professional communicators and leaders.

I think the ethical challenge we all face and what is the core goal of Civil Influence is - how can we all shift and evolve our communication with what we now know so as to affect change from with one another and in ourselves from a very positive base?”

Listen for more on the Ethical Challenges of Weaponized Communication on the Ethical Voices podcast with Volume Public Relations and Engagement Science Lab founder, Elizabeth Edwards and Mark W. McClennan.

Interesting crisis/brand/consumer behavior research in this week. Consumers see brands with a cute logo as still mailable, and therefore more deserving of forgiveness. Consumers are less likely to punish and more interested in protecting brands with a cute logo.

World Conference 2022: Elizabeth Edwards 06/22/2022

Communication exists to create change. Changes in awareness. Changes in behavior. How can communication maximize behavior change at scale?

Join our founder in NYC at the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)World Conference on June 27th for an unprecedented look at how to impact individual, institutional and global change by aligning with new Civil-Social Behavior Change Communication strategies.

3 Key Lessons:

🧠 A shift is underway. There are more effective (and more civilized) ways to message and engage without fear, scarcity, and urgency in the lead.

🧠 What are civil alternatives to communication norms that manipulate and exploit subconscious pain available? Is there a place for FOMO marketing, bro marketing, or hyper-emotion stimulation? (There isn't.)

🧠 How to create one-to-many communication based on an appreciation of audience agency, which deepens authentic consideration.

The future of communication is created with attunement to science and civility and leads us to new ways to change ourselves and our world.

How do you communicate to change behavior? 🦄 Join us tomorrow as we share the behavioral science shifts we applied for BMW, Charter and Transamerica to increase communication outcomes.

Because the future of engagement is behavioral 🧠🧐

Timeline photos 02/17/2021

Behavior science teaches us some interesting ways to increase communication effectiveness. One of the most important is to put your audience's motivations, cares, concerns, lives, and issues, before your own.

Does your website talk all about what "we do" versus what "you need?" While a subtle change, tuning your communication to focus on your audience is important in every context.

Timeline photos 02/16/2021

Do you know the most common communication mistakes? Thanks to human behavior and mind science, we have a whole new set of insights into what creates confusion, and what encourages comprehension.

Check out our free eBook on the top 9 "Cognitive Messaging Mistakes" that may be undermining your ability to connect, and how to fix them.

Timeline photos 02/15/2021

Do you think about how your communication is "tuned"? The words we choose and the way we use them has everything to do with how our audiences feel and respond. Will they agree and participate? Or will they disagree and possibly even backlash?

At Volume, we've learned from behavior and mind science how to tune strategic communication to appeal to the mind's reason, emotion and decision centers. Now we use that science to help ethics-based communicators create messages, content, and campaigns that spur change.

Because when we tune communication for comprehension, we are better able to connect, to be understood, and to make sense in this noisy world.

Your words are your superpower. Use them wisely.

Timeline photos 02/12/2021

Do you ever wonder if your audience likes your message? Transamerica needed our help decoding why a message wasn't working. New language from their big agency was supposed to attract customers, but instead seemed to be sending them running.

Our Behavioral Communication Audit mapped where their words were offending the mind's emotion and decision centers. We then trained their team how to activate the mind with words that connect and counterbalance biases.

After our report and training, their team had everything in hand to rebrand, remessage, and relaunch to triple-digit improvements.

Not all communication is created equal. Not even close.

Timeline photos 02/11/2021

WHY do you communicate? Just to yell stuff out there? Or so the people hearing you will understand and care in some way?

Traditional Communication definitions and teachings do not bother themselves with whether or not understanding happens. They just load you up with grammar and style guides. And that is a dangerous mistake. Communication is not the key, comprehension is. You can communicate all day long but if you aren't understood, you're just making noise. And we have more than enough of that.

Because of our 15 years of research at the intersection of communication science and human behavior, we are now leading the way for a new communication framework and field - Behavioral Communication - where communication is tailored to the behavioral science, behavioral economics, and neuroscience maps of human engagement preferences. Where words are skillfully selected to connect, create relationship, and convert based on the science of the mind.

Not all words are created equal. Not even close.

Council Post: Why Your Current Communication Strategy Is All Wrong — And How To Fix It 12/08/2020

The time has come to sound the alarm🚨⏰

Today in Forbes we are calling FOUL on one of the biggest problems facing professional communication.

Long ago someone decided communicators would be too powerful if our skills were combined with what scientists know about the mind.

So we call communication an art, and ignore the fact that science holds the keys to what happens while we process communication and make decisions.

Then backfire happens. Misunderstanding flourishes. Debates and divides grow. This madness has to stop 🛑

Join me in declaring it’s time for communicators to have access. It is time for the field of “Behavioral Communication.”

Communicators deserve to be trained how to engage not just the latest tools, but the mind.

“When consumers are bombarded with instant communication, social media and never-ending distractions, grabbing their attention and keeping it requires more than a catchy headline or well-rehearsed pitch. It requires us to understand how humans behave.”
