Guest commentary: Our new Afghan neighbors deserve the security of permanent safety in the U.S. 03/30/2022

While humanitarian parole granted immediate entry into the United States, it comes with the ultimatum of only two years of residency unless individuals shift to a more permanent immigration status or are under threat of deportation.

Guest commentary: Forcing local governments to bargain with public unions is not the “Colorado way” 03/29/2022

Coloradans have always preserved a careful balance between labor unions and employers. This balance is at grave risk in the state capitol now.

Opinion: Denver’s housing plan doesn’t go far enough to help those facing displacement 03/28/2022

As it stands, this is not an equitable policy for those in our city who have been the most exploited through our city's exclusionary housing policies and practices.

Kafer: PERA isn’t a political pawn in an international game of chess 03/27/2022

Ben & #38; Jerry’s decided to no longer sell ice cream in the occupied West Bank because it is inconsistent with company values to be “present within an internationally recognised illegal occupation.” Explaining their decision in the New York Times, company founders Bennett Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, both Jewish and supporters of the State of Israel, described the occupation as “a barrier to peace violates the basic human rights of the Palestinian people who live under the occupation.” The company will continue to sell ice cream in Israel.

Silverii: Colorado Republicans gather and support the worst of the worst 03/26/2022

Last weekend’s state assemblies showed that Republicans could squander their 2022 opportunities -- Biden's low approval rating, inflation, a pending war. So embarrassing were the assemblies, I almost feel bad for them.

Letters: Readers skeptical of “working paper” on COVID shutdowns 03/24/2022

"While one of the authors is a Johns Hopkins professor, that institution did not endorse the paper. A number of medical studies disagree with the conclusions, in large part because the studies they used and the methods were economic, not medical." -- Lael Moe, Arvada

Kafer: DougCo parents shouldn’t fall for these divisive union tricks 03/23/2022

The acrimonious board meetings, the theatrical protests, the righteous Twitter battles, and sadly the lost instructional time—is going according to plan. This is how unions remove troublesome reformers from public school boards.

Opinion: Why we should bid the anachronism of valedictorian farewell 03/23/2022

Critics of Cherry Creek School District’s decision to retire valedictorian titles and ranking students by GPA couldn’t be more wrong, and the district should be lauded, not maligned.

Opinion: Step up for our mobile home park residents before it’s too late 03/23/2022

As a child, I lived in in the Basalt Aspen Mobile Home Park between Basalt and El Jebel, off of Willits Lane. The community we created there made a lasting impression on residents like me. It gave us a sense of belonging and a stable place to grow up.

Opinion: Mobile home park residents will suffer if rent is capped 03/23/2022

Manufactured and modular housing offers a unique solution to the affordable housing crisis. Unfortunately, HB22-1287 unfairly targets mobile home park owners and applies rent control to mobile home parks in Colorado, putting this affordable housing option in jeopardy.

Editorial: Make Roe v. Wade irrelevant 03/23/2022

Limerick: Academia is bogged down, reform the counterproductive FRPA to shed some weight 03/21/2022

Opinion: Protect Coloradans from this crushing housing inflation 03/17/2022

It’s no secret that the American dream of owning a home or starting a business is unattainable for the average Coloradan. Every day, we hear from our constituents about the record-breaking housing and property costs squeezing them out of the market, and in some cases, the state. In fact, Colorado’s real estate value last year skyrocketed to $1.2 trillion, according to a study by Zillow.

Opinion: DPS is attacking the innovations that make schools excel 03/16/2022

At Beacon and other innovation schools in Denver Public Schools (DPS) teachers have worked for years to create plans to ensure we’re able to meet the unique needs of our students - and our efforts have paid off with our kids’ academic success. As educators, we relish the opportunity to be creative and now more than ever uphold freedom and flexibility in practicing our craft to ensure our students receive the high quality education they deserve. In fact, we all know that developing skills in differentiating instruction is essential to becoming a great teacher. So as members of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA), we find it absurd that the union and some members of the school board want to deny innovation schools the freedoms in the name of ‘teachers rights.’ This proposed change came as a complete surprise to us and we’re fearful of a board that wants to apply the same set of rules to all schools, regardless of how things are going at the school or what its teachers think. It is not differentiation to mandate blanket rules for all schools without considering the diversity of successful programs.

Kafer: If lockdowns saved lives, they’d be worth it. This analysis says they didn’t. 03/15/2022

The two year anniversary of two weeks to flatten the curve is this week. The lessons learned over the past two years can be summed up in one word--don’t. A just published meta-analysis of the impact of lockdowns, shelter in place orders, and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) on COVID mortality rates by Johns Hopkins University researchers found: “Overall, our meta-analysis fails to confirm that lockdowns have had a large, significant effect on mortality rates…Shelter-in-place orders (SIPOs) were also ineffective. Studies looking at specific NPIs (lockdown vs. no lockdown, facemasks, closing non-essential businesses, border closures, school closures, and limiting gatherings) also find no broad-based evidence of noticeable effects on COVID-19 mortality.”

Silverii: Big Oil profits when prices surge, and corporations will cash in on this crisis 03/14/2022

Masket: The problem with campus “debate” 03/10/2022
