We are proud that the work of our faculty and students regularly has positive, real-world impact on not only local communities, but also nationally and even internationally. That is why we are extremely excited to share the work of Dr. Betcy Jose, whose expertise directly led to nearly 100 Afghan refugees receiving asylum in the United States!

Dr. Jose provided a memorandum in support of asylum applicants in Vermont attesting to the devastating political and security situation in Afghanistan. These applicants have thus far experienced a 100% success rate with the help of her memorandum, and it has reportedly been widely circulated nationally as well.

Congratulations to Dr. Jose on her dedicated work!

We are thrilled to share this recent article that was co-authored by Dr. Sasha Breger-Bush and a number of her students! Published in economics magazine Dollars & Sense, "Will the World Ditch the Dollar?" explores the global dominance of the U.S. dollar and argues that its supremacy may not be as secure as many economists today believe.

The Harding Fellowship in Student Hunger and Homelessness was created to identify and expand services, conduct research, and engage the community in order to alleviate hunger and homelessness on the CU Denver campus.

One of our fellows, Levi Brower, is a first-generation student focusing on urban politics and ways to make cities more equitable and enjoyable places to live. He has a background in agriculture and forest management. "So far, my favorite part of the fellowship has been connecting with community members and learning about the support systems in place for students," Levi says. "There are so many faculty members who want to help student connect with the resources they need to succeed."

We are excited to have fellows doing this important work this academic year!

The Political Science Department is proud to share the work of faculty member Dr. Jim Walsh, who recently unveiled a historic memorial that was the result of years of dedicated research!

On September 16th, 2023, Dr. Walsh's years-long project came to fruition with Unearthed: Voices of Leadville’s Shanty Irish, where the newly installed Leadville Irish Miners’ Memorial was unveiled. This memorial statue commemorates the more than 1,300 immigrants buried in unmarked pauper graves in the Catholic Free section of Evergreen Cemetery in Leadville. The event was attended by members of the Irish community, union representatives, U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Claire D. Cronin, and Senator Michael Bennet!

“The unveiling of the Irish Miners’ Memorial in Leadville was the culmination of decades of research and activism by Dr. James Walsh, CU Denver students, and the Irish community in Colorado and beyond. The beautiful memorial not only commemorates the memory, spirit, and humanity of the named and unnamed miners interred there but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of labor movements across the globe past, present, and future.” - Dr. Mike Berry

Congratulations to Dr. Walsh on his historic accomplishment!

Migration and refugee/asylum law has been vitally relevant to the U.S. since its founding. Immigration law and policy bears even greater relevance to the outlook of the rest of this century as issues like climate change and globalization alter the political and literal landscape of the world.

This fall, Professor Jim Walsh explores immigration and migration in PSCI 4545: Immigration Politics. Join Professor Walsh as he introduces students to central theories of migration and explores a survey of immigration history, law, and policy in the 19th and 20th centuries. This course highlights the experiences of migrants and refugees from many parts of the world, as well as important, related topics like U.S.-Mexican relations, bilingual education, undocumented immigration, and globalization.

Politics in East Asian countries is increasingly relevant to those living in the U.S.—whether it be the growing influence of art, media and cultural power of countries like Japan and South Korea, the foreign policy challenges shaping relations between U.S.-allied countries and other East Asian nations like China, or the deep economic relationship between the U.S. and East Asian nations.

Join Professor Tony Robinson in PSCI 4186: East Asia in World Affairs as he explores the political-economic systems and foreign policies of East Asian powers like China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Professor Robinson analyzes how these powers interact with each other, how they impact politics and economics at the global level, and discusses major theoretical approaches to the study of East Asian powers.
