Working primarily in thick, juicy oils, my paintings are composed of rural and urban landscapes

Hey y’all! Wishing you had an artist in your back pocket?

I’m excited to share that I’ll be MENTORING artists with Mastrius ✨
A learning platform for artists all over the world to come be trained and supported in their creative talent.

Our mentorship group digs into the technical aspects of painting like composition and color, as well as how to self critique, and much more!

In our group, you, me, and up to just 7 other artists will meet together ONLINE monthly. We’ll tackle the hurdles and challenges you face as artists and in your own individual art practices.

I’ll help boost your skill and confidence by assigning homework tailored to your specific goals.. Between sessions you’ll work on what I’ve assigned, supported and encouraged by the artists in your group.

There are ONLY 8 spots available in my group and it fills up fast, so register NOW! (Don’t worry, you’re not locked in & you can cancel at any time… but seriously, we’ll learn tons and have so much fun, you won’t want to 🤓)

When you think of western art what comes to mind?
I participate in a number of western art shows and see mostly the classic telling of the west…Cowboys, American Indians, horses, cattle, and bison, and desert landscape.

There is a slice of the west that also has its chapters—the Motel era. Nostalgia with notes of car bingo cards, Cheeto stained fingers, and roll down windows.

The healing power of art—especially when a group with purpose comes together ❤️🙏

You know that feeling of, “You had me at ‘hello’…”?😉

I hadn’t heard of Artma until I got an email in my inbox last year and I’ll tell you, that after having one—ONE—phone call, I couldn’t have been more excited to donate a piece of my work 😄👏

I’m so happy—grateful actually— to be a part of this fundraiser to benefit pediatric cancer research—

So very grateful to have captured such a cool sign in its original glory. (sigh…) New ownership updated the sign at some point—ughhh..! can’t tell you how bummed I was to see my ‘old friend’ gone 😕. I DO feel some appreciation that they didn’t scrap it completely but….
My fellow sign lovers, whaddaya think?

Irving, where ever you are, this one’s for you 😏👍🚗✨⠀

OK, let’s shake it up.
Whaddaya think—Which stage is your fave—The ‘before’ white or ‘after’? 😏🤓(I seriously love them both now)

I’m not gonna lie, it took me days before I loaded up that big brush and took the plunge. Lol My heart still races looking at these!

You never quite know if it’s going to “work“ but there’s only ONE way to find out. Be bold when curiosity taps you on the shoulder. It’s worth every bead of sweat 🫣😅

Such endless character in barns…it’s like a weathered wood tapestry out there!

A FAVORITE piece I did a few years ago. Yes, it took a long time, and yes, my brain hurt with all the detail… but man o man was it rewarding to paint!
‘Coupled’ 24x60 [sold]

It’s a big beautiful tapestry of light and dark…the journey of the shadow…, and the gorgeousness of rust, dirt and iron.
Swipe through to get up close 🔎👀

Down to the last notes with this piece.👏✨ (swipe to sneak peek a couple others) It’s been a slight ‘step left’ to focus on a body of small landscapes but the stretch feels good.
Excited for a terrific gallery opportunity in Laguna. Here’s to spreading wings a bit wider this year. Stay tuned!

Some paintings take you to places you never imagined, giving you a sense of newfound capacity. This past year I focused on the richness of all things AROUND the structures I paint: clouds, grasses and trees… it’s been absolutely amazing.
To those of you who ask, is it hard to let go of your paintings? Most of the time, no, not really. Painting them is a journey that feels satisfyingly complete.
But there are always a few I bond with deeply every year— my unexpected ‘teachers’ and I am forever changed by our dialogue. I keep them in view while I work on new pieces, reinforcing and soaking up as much as I can until it’s “time”. And when the day comes to drive them away, I desperately scan the studio in hopes of seeing another piece I could send instead LOL❤️

This one started as a tiny 5x5 whim a year ago and the seed was planted. 🌱😏 swipe left to see.

Love this view from the tracks by the Longmont Sugar Factory.

I’m so hopeful that one day the Mill will be saved and repurposed. Such rich history and connection to the community(120yrs). It’s a ridiculously tall order as the old girl is barely holding together--but her architecture is fantastic…! 🙌👏🤓

To know any painting is to get up close,…fold arms up across your chest, turn and fall in…

A couple of small works headed to a great group show in Indianapolis. 👏

As I tend to fall more in the “under-the-radar” category ‘round these social media parts🤫🥷, the organic connections/friendships that can spark here are, in a nutshell,…cool.

reached out to 40 artists for this event—and wow, what a group. I’m really honored!
“…artists whose career spans range from established national painters to some earlier career midwest artists to some national artists who continue to fly under the radar, but whom I love their work.”

Take a peek at what Justin’s up to —lot’s of beautiful works coming in!!

[‘Fence Line’ 6x8 ] It’s a bit of an exploration painted on a different kind of wood panel with a slightly different palette for me… I love how well it worked to describe the air and grasses, dry and parched of color. 🌾🌾

If you’ve been looking to get one of my small pieces for your own, hop on this little gem! This is my donated work for the Buy-it-Now Sale .

I wasn’t even two songs into my morning drive-about when I came to a full stop and u-turned back to this place. After a few minutes looking at view options from the road, a handful of family come out of the main house. Suffice to say, I made a beeline to the driveway, grabbed my card and introduce myself. Turns out the owners are also photographers 💚.

“Summer Orange” 10x16

I could’ve spent the entire week here… it has more than enough for a lifetime of paintings: main farmhouse, small red farmhouse, multiple barns and out buildings, gorgeous trees (the ashes full w orange berries) and acres of orchard

Another one for Door County Plein Air! I’m gaga for all the Queen Anne’s lace in bloom out here—it’s absolutely fantastic!

Down at marina with a couple other artists this eve…if only dusk could last twice as long—we could get a painting done AND sit back and chill with everyone else along the waterfront 😄

I pass this barn on my drives down to New Mexico. It’s the first marker of being past the network of cities and entering broad horizons and big sky that will usher me the rest of the way. 🌤🌾.

I’m usually gawking at this place in a post-city fog, seeing all the great angles to paint from…when I’m suddenly jolted by the fact that I’m WAY past the frontage road exit to stop and do anything about it. 😳😩

Sound familiar? How often do you find yourself in full bore strategy to come back and get it “next time”..?? 🤓🙏

Grateful I finally did it one day. This is the second piece I’ve now painted of this property

06/26/2021

Anyone lose track of the “where” but remember everything about being there? I was certain I had this barn locked in. Nope. 🥴🤭😂

I do know that this is in western Colorado.

AND I remember the details. The coolness of stepping inside, how your eyes adjust, air thick with hay, wood, dirt, the slightest bit of ‘Colorado humid’…
The way sound deadens in a barn, sinking into bales, wrapping around tools escaping through gaps between wall boards… how your hand flies up for a visor when you look back out to the contrast of light and heat outside. It was hot that day much like it’s been for the past few weeks here… this was welcome shelter.

A bit long for a title, but the backdrop for ‘Red’s Bale’ 18x36.

First plein air in awhile! Hot but beautiful…gratefully finding shade.
I cannot express how wonderful and meaningful it was to be out in the company of so many art-making and art-loving souls again. 🙏

It’s rewarding to pull out a piece from the abandoned-paintings pile (how big is yours..??), feel a renewed connection and make good progress with it. This was a plein air “start” from years ago—LOL I wimped out in the cold that day.🥶🤷‍♀️🤭
