We got to chat with British artist Laura Ellen Bacon when she was here in June creating and installing her mesmerizing sculpture titled "Rejuvenation."

Laura Ellen Bacon is renowned for transforming raw, natural materials by hand into sculptures in both interior and landscape settings. Her inaugural US installation, "Rejuvenation," measuring over 20 feet in height and made of more than 500 pounds of willow branches, will be on view at the museum through this fall.

"I feel as if all the fibers inside the willow will listen and soak up the environment. I imagine every strand of willow and every willow knot in the work is absorbing gentle vibrations and listening to the building and the people within it." – Laura Ellen Bacon

We are excited to announce that the artist for the next iteration of the Denver Art Museum Mural Project is Chelsea Hart! A local contemporary painter and muralist, Hart plans to collect the dreams of Denver to inspire her final design of the mural that will be installed in the DAM's Duncan Hall in January 2025. 🎨

"My inspiration behind this mural is to create a piece that showcases the interesting communities of Denver and what makes those communities unique while celebrating the commonalities between these groups. More specifically, I want to know the dreams of these communities. We'll involve the community by asking questions like "What about Denver allows you to dream big?," "what sparks your imagination and brings out your creativity?" etc. Answers to these questions will be collected throughout the city in "dream boxes," where anyone can submit their answers. I will design a mural that weaves together these answers and creates a vibrant, playful mural full of recognizable imagery, coming together in a quilt-like fashion." - Chelsea Hart

Want to get involved in the Mural Project? We invite you to attend the next Untitled: Artist Takeover on July 26 from 6pm to 10pm to meet Chelsea Hart and help decorate one of the dream boxes that will go out into the community this fall! Can't make it to Untitled? August 13 is a Free Day at the DAM and another opportunity to decorate a dream box! Stay tuned here and on our website for more ways to get involved and for exact locations of the dream boxes once they are available.

Take a minute to slow down with us in the exhibition "Biophilia: Nature Reimagined." 🌼

This installation, titled "Meadow," created by DRIFT, beautifully bridges technology and nature. It draws inspiration from flowers that open with the warmth of sunlight and close at night. Using advanced robotics and complex software, this piece creates a field of blooms in perpetual motion. The meditative rhythm and exaggerated scale of these upturned blossoms form a wondrous landscape, encouraging reflection and reconnection with the natural world around us.

"Meadow" features custom colors inspired by wildflowers native to Colorado, including purple coneflower, Rocky Mountain iris, Colorado blue columbine, black-eyed Susan, and sulphur flower. 💜

When you're in the exhibition, scan the QR code located on the wall label of this artwork for a Mindful Looking experience that will guide you through a journey of mindfulness and tranquility, offered in both English and Spanish. And don't forget to check out the digital catalog at the following link to learn more about the artworks on view in the exhibition: https://bit.ly/4crhuy6

"Galih Podo," picured here, is a natural dye batik "kain" (which means “long traditional cloth” in Indonesian) made by the Indonesian batik artist Sapuan.

Based in Tunjungsari, a small village on the northern coast of Java, Indonesia, Sapuan combines his family’s multi-generational interest in batik with his training in the natural sciences to express his own fascination with the existential dilemmas of being human.

Requiring over two years to complete (2020-22), "Galih Podo" was created by applying layers of liquid wax by hand, through small brass vessels called "canting," and then dying the fabric in phases.

Learn more about Sapuan and the many symbols included in this textile, which is on view in "Weaving a Foundation: Cornerstones of the Textile Arts Collection," from Carla Jones, Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado Boulder: https://bit.ly/3VOOaL2

Earlier this month, on June 10th, was Maurice Sendak's birthday!

In honor of the artist's birthday, and the upcoming exhibition 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘬, we gathered 20 of our favorite Sendak quotes. Read one below, and click this link to read the others: https://bit.ly/3KXEFEl

Let your true colors shine and be proud of who you are, you're a work of art! 🏳️‍🌈 We are proud to be participating in Denver Pride this weekend in support of the LGBTQ+ community and The Center on Colfax.

About this artwork:
Designed for Etcétera, a store owned by fashion journalist Felisa Pinto in Buenos Aires, this composition likely relates to the free love movement of the 1960s and 70s, propelled by a desire to embrace all forms of love. Along with "Love (Butterfly)," Gimenez’s "Love" posters both center masculine figures through a fantastical, romantic lens to amplify q***rness and q***r love.

We had the pleasure of talking with Dixon Lu, Associate Partner at MAD Architects, and wow, did we learn a lot about the incredible work they're doing! MAD Architects' model of the Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center (located in eastern China) is in our new exhibition "Biophilia: Nature Reimagined," which brings together more than 80 imaginative works, including architectural models and photographs, objects, fashion, digital installations, and immersive art experiences that collectively highlight the transformative power of nature.

Founded by Ma Yansong in 2004, MAD Architects is more than just a global architecture firm; it's a movement that defies conventional boundaries. Inspired by nature, MAD's designs strive not only to construct buildings but also to create experiences that enhance both human life and the environment. From their stunning projects worldwide to their current endeavors like One River North in Denver's RiNo neighborhood, MAD Architects is truly redefining architecture's relationship with the world around us.

This model of the Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center features mountainous towers that evoke a traditional Chinese landscape painting. Meandering pathways invite people to wander among water features, gardens, and buildings. Promoting well-being, the project challenges the rectangular, homogenous structures that have shaped our urban environments. In describing cities as "steel concrete forests," the architects suggest that our urban environments fail to match the diverse ecosystem of the natural landscape.

Check out this model in "Biophilia," on view through August 11, and included in general admission, which is free for everyone 18 and under every day, as well as museum members.

As Bridgerton makes a dazzling return to our screens, we can't help but draw parallels between the Regency-era drama and our engaging painting of Queen Charlotte by Benjamin West on loan as a “guest of honor” at the museum, in the heart of our European Art before 1800 gallery!

This portrait, dating back to the 1700s, offers a captivating glimpse into the enigmatic figure of Queen Charlotte. Yet, beyond its aesthetic allure, it ignites ongoing debates surrounding her features and ancestry, underscoring the complex interplay between art and historical interpretation.
