August 13 is the feast of Blessed Michael J. McGivney, American diocesan priest, founder of the Knights of Columbus.

Born in an Irish immigrant family in Waterury, CT being the oldest of 13 children, six of whom died in early infancy. He entered the seminary in 1868 at the age of 16. Five years later, he left the seminary to help raise his family after his father's death. He was able to return to the seminary and was ordained December 22, 1877 in Baltimore, MD. Based on his own experience with the impact to family's with the passing of the main wage provider, he founded the Knights of Columbus as a mutual aid society to provide financial assistance to widows and orphans. Today, the Knights of Coumbus have 2.1 million members in 13 countries and it is the largest Catholic fraternal lay organization in the world. Father McGivney was beatified on October 31, 2020 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hatford, CT.

Let us pray to Blessed Michael J. McGivney so we are protectors of our families and that our zeal for service may be the reflection for his caring to the needy, the outcast, and the migrants.

Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us. Vivat Jesus!
