It’s been all over the news, locally and nationally, even though so many of the reports are prejudicial in favor of abortion. The Iowa Heartbeat Bill is now legal and can be enforced! As of Monday, July 29th, babies CANNOT be electively aborted once a fetal heartbeat is detected. So many of the news reports spin the story as a “woe is me” for Planned Parenthood. They claim it is a bad thing that women won’t have access to abortion in the state but are still going to facilitate the continued slaughter of babies as they arrange appointments and travel to pro-abortion states like Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.

The good news is that Iowa Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs) are equipped and ready to handle the influx of moms-to-be. They are prepared to do what they have always done. They will provide insight and truth, connect women to prenatal care, help with essentials for the new baby; and continue to be the hands and feet of Jesus as they love both mom and baby. In a recent report published by Charlotte Lozier Institute, over a five-year period, approximately 828,000 lives were saved through the Pregnancy Resource Centers that were a part of affiliate PRC networks. This will be a time for Iowa to shine and demonstrate that pro-lifers are what they claim to be.

There is already proof that Heartbeat Bills save lives. Susan B. Anthony published a report in 2023 that stated since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, 32,000 more innocent lives have been saved in states with protections for the unborn. And Texas has reported at least 10,000 babies saved since their Heartbeat Law went into effect. These numbers are more than inspirational.

Even as we celebrate the Heartbeat Bill and Planned Parenthood reduces its presence in Iowa, our work continues. We will join our Pro-Life Coalition members in the upcoming legislative session to support additional pro-life bills. Our focus will be on Life at Conception, legislation that requires statistical abortion reporting, and a law that regulates abortion pill distribution. Still on our wish list is Baby Olivia, which teaches the science and biology of fetal development in Iowa classrooms. IRTL will do all it can in this existing culture, to advocate for as many pro-life laws as possible and advance our mission to change as many hearts and minds as possible.

The Iowa Supreme Court reiterated that there is no constitutional right to an abortion in the state. The new law will go into effect at 8 a.m. Monday.
