The 25th annual White Eagle Pow Wow returns this weekend to Jester Park. Although most pow wows are primarily for Native Americans, this one is open to the general public “to mend the sacred hoop of life by bringing the community together and celebrating our differences,” according to the event’s website. A full schedule of performances — music, dance, stories and more — is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the county park in Granger.

Monica Goodlett founded Black Iowa Outdoors earlier this year to share her love for hiking with other local Black and brown Americans. Each month, she leads a group of up to 30 hikers of all levels along the trails and into the woods in Central Iowa.
She hopes the group will help her community reconnect with nature and get some exercise. “There were other hiking groups, but they didn’t quite fit,” she said. “I wanted to be among other African Americans and also inspire them to get outdoors.”
Goodlett also uses the hikes to promote mental health in the Black community, which is one of her passions. She is an ambassador for the statewide "Make It OK" initiative. “It’s not always about medicine or other coping mechanisms,” she said. “Just getting out there and walking can give us purpose.”

Happy 25th work anniversary to Jason Swanson, Business Publication Corp.’s vice president of operations.
Jason joined BPC as an account executive for Cityview and has held various positions before assuming his current role in 2017. He is responsible for a wide range of duties including audience development, IT, administration, photography and customer service.
Jason said the parts of the job he enjoys most are the connections with the community, the people he works with, as well as working with people in general, and the feeling that no day is ever the same because he works with several different departments.
He added that he has specifically enjoyed working for BPC Owner and Chair Connie Wimer.
One of Jason’s favorite projects that he has led is Forty Under 40.
“I took that over probably 15 years ago, maybe more, and I really take satisfaction in putting together that program, recognizing the people every year,” he said. “I get satisfaction out of seeing how proud their families are. Their parents come and they're excited. And it's a chance for us to give somebody a pat on the back for doing a good job.”
Thank you, Jason, for all you do to make Business Publications Corp. a strong and growing company.

Take note, hungry readers: It’s tacu tacu time.
The inaugural Iowa Latino Restaurant Week starts today and runs through next Saturday, Sept. 21, at 22 eateries in Greater Des Moines and a couple more farther afield. The idea is to entice Iowans to try some south-of-the-border fare besides tacos — not only tacu tacu, but pozole, llapingachos and other specialties your high school Spanish textbook probably never mentioned.

“All of us want experts to help tell us how to look our best,” said Naphtali Crouse, who owns Blend & Bright Salon Spa and provides House of Colour services in Ankeny.
She’s right. Just ask the millions of people who pay attention to on Instagram and TikTok. The notion of having someone else suggest what to wear, of outsourcing at least one of our daily decisions, seems like a small but welcome luxury.🌈

Raymond Abwe visited a lot of heritage festivals when he first moved to Des Moines from Tanzania nine years ago. It was a great way for him to learn more about his new home and the diverse mix of cultures represented in it.
“As an African, I thought, ‘Why not us?’” he said. “We should have a festival where people can come, see how we dress, and dance and learn about our culture, too.”
He was inspired to start the first Des moines African youth festival Awards – or DAFESTA for short – five years ago. Since then, it’s become one of the biggest celebrations of African cultures in Des Moines and attracts visitors from all over the United States.
Starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, DAFESTA will once again put African culture on full display. Tanzanian pop singer Hamisa Mobetto will emcee the evening’s program, which includes a fashion show as well as live music and dance performances.
“Everybody’s welcome,” Abwe said. “We have people from so many different places come, just because they have an interest and want to learn the cultures.”

Happy fifth anniversary to Emily Wood! As our incredible special projects editor, Emily is responsible for the editorial aspect of some of our largest annual issues and events, including Forty Under 40 and Women of Influence. We can also thank Emily for her reporting and editing on the award-winning weekly Fearless e-newsletters.
“I’m super proud of Fearless,” Emily said. “It continues to gain momentum. I’ve seen people take a quote they read in Fearless and have it pinned up in their office, and that’s really cool to make that kind of an impact.”
Emily started as a full-time editor for the Business Record and shifted to a more specialized role a year ago. “My brain is definitely geared towards the long-term planning and strategy work behind special projects,” Emily said.
Her big-picture thinking has been a major asset to our organization over the past five years, especially when it comes to navigating BPC’s ever-changing needs as a community-focused company. Emily leads our Racial Equity Advisory Board, an initiative that aims to empower our reporters to fairly represent our diverse community.
“I’ve grown more confident in my work as a journalist,” Emily said. “And I’ve learned more about how to take an audience’s needs and use that to create great work that I’m proud of and is going to be helpful to the audience.”
We’re looking forward to everything Emily has planned for the future, including expanding our special projects and engaging our past and future honorees in new and exciting ways. Emily, thank you for everything you do and for choosing to share your talents with BPC!

Congratulations to Sarah Gotto, who celebrated four years at Business Publications Corp. on Friday! Sarah is a leading creative force behind our dsm magazine and BPC Custom products, where you can see her mark in the magazine layouts, ads, e-newsletters and social media.
“I’m proud of the quality of work we do with such a small team,” Sarah said. “I recently got to create a completely new design and layout for one of our custom client’s annual publications, which is one of my favorite projects to do as a designer. It’s so fun to see the final product after all the work that went into it.”
Sarah’s role has evolved in many ways during her time. Over the past year, she’s helped BPC Custom expand and is excited about new products that will be revealed soon.
“I’m also excited for dsm Restaurant Week, which is coming right up on Aug. 16 - 25!” Sarah said. “Our team puts months of work into putting it together each year, so it’s fun to sit back and enjoy some good food when it arrives.”
Sarah, we’re so grateful that you share your incredible vision and leadership with BPC. Thank you for four amazing years!

Occupations: Founder and CEO of Sourced Thread, an apparel startup, and designer and owner of RÜTD clothing brand.
Describe your personal style: "I love wearing fun pants and hats, but I feel like I’m better at dressing other people than myself."
How did you get into fashion design? "When I was 5 years old, I went through treatment for leukemia. During that time, I had a lot of exposure to different art therapies, and I learned how much I enjoy building things, creating and working with my hands. After I recovered, I had the idea to be an engineer when I grew up. Fast-forward to high school: I got really into fashion. In a way, I combined my two interests and went to school for apparel design at Iowa State."
