Presenting Lot 1009, an early work from artist LeRoy Neiman, titled "Boats and the Sea" (1953). This stunning oil on masonite, measuring 10.25" x 34", captures a more traditional approach, unlike Neiman's later works, which are characterized by their flamboyant and ostentatious Pop Art style.
LeRoy Neiman (1921-2012) is celebrated for his brilliantly colored, energetic depictions of sporting events and leisure activities. His unique style blends Pop Art sensibilities with impressionistic brushwork, making his works instantly recognizable and highly sought after.
"Boats and the Sea" is a testament to Neiman's early career success. Although it is not the same piece as his award-winning "Idle Boats," which won first prize for oil painting at the 1953 Twin City Show and was acquired by the Minneapolis Art Institute, "Boats and the Sea" reflects a similar period in Neiman's artistic development. This piece marks a pivotal moment in Neiman's career, showcasing his burgeoning talent and setting the stage for his future acclaim.
This painting emphasizes Neiman's versatility and his ability to capture serene maritime scenes with a refined touch, making it a rare and valuable addition to any collection. Learn more and bid at https://bit.ly/3VzH3Ya
Featuring Lot 1070 in Day Two of the June 2024 Auctions: Samuel Anderson Robb's meticulously crafted wooden figure of Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion. Known for his detailed carvings for to***co shops and circus wagons, Robb's work was a staple of 19th-century New York City. This rare and exceptional piece, originating from a Windsor, Ontario collection, stands out not only for its craftsmanship but also for its bold subject matter.
Jack Johnson's 1908 victory and reign challenged racial segregation during the Jim Crow era, making this figure a significant cultural artifact. Unlike typical cigar store displays of the period, this figure celebrates a prominent African American athlete, reflecting the evolving social dynamics of the early 20th century. Pictured: George Edwards Hering (British, 1805-1879) - Lot 1090: "Constantinople from the Golden Horn" and 1091: "View of the Grand Canal, Venice"
George Edwards Hering, born in London in 1805, was a distinguished English landscape painter with a penchant for capturing the essence of Italian and Eastern European sceneries. His artistic journey began after a significant life change; following the early loss of his father, who was a German bookbinder, Hering transitioned from a bank clerk to pursuing art as his profession. His formal education in art commenced in 1829 at the art school in Munich, a move facilitated by Lord Erskine's letters of introduction that also led him to Venice. Hering's travels didn't stop in Italy; they also extended to Constantinople (now Istanbul) and Smyrna, visits that made way for the works we are proud to offer today.
