We will be removing outdated content and adding new updates from our inactive period and upcoming plans. The response to our return to active social media engagement and storytelling has been overwhelming. Our online store is up and running with some items on clearance as we prepare for exciting summer and fall merchandise. Now that the address and the map is gone from the website we will begin to show you with pictures and video’s and tell you exactly what it took to open a 450 square foot storefront to honor the legacy of J.Dilla. The first pic in our post ,according to James Woods,formally of Goodwells in Midtown and the owner of the Corner Pocket in this space in the early 80’s is where Rosa Parks used to sit when she would come in for lunch at least one a week while working forJohn Conyers a coupe of blocks away on Library St. The second pic is July of 2013 and 7 month after signing our lease, the spot is completely cleared out and ready to renovate....oh but wait the third picture is Uncle Herm standing on top of a bunch of burnt lights and fixtures 3 months later. After the weilders from the contruction crew started a fire in the lobby and mezzanine and decided to dump everything in 242 John R...... dated pictures don’t lie.....

We're back at it again this Wednesday!! Hustle dance class this Wednesday at 5:45pm.

Ok friends, family and folks, I would appreciate it if you could take a look at the GoFundMe for my younger brother Al's daughter, Destinee. Al was a very huge influence on the development of young James Yancey's technical and musical skills. Most of Jay Dee's close constituents knew of Uncle Al when they came in town, they were always protected and anyone associated within his circle was on high alert. Al has been working on cars since handing me tools while I worked on some of my first cars (13 year age difference). He also either installed or perfected every sound system in every whip James had with the exception of the Cali ride. He was the closest in our family to James but rarely talks to anyone about him. I was really surprised that he agreed to talk to for the book Dilla Time. I have seen Al fix people’s cars, buy the part out of his own pocket, and put gas in it so they go to work or get a job. He learned to be an amazing father for those kids and he will shovel a 10-foot spot in the ice and snow to fix a car to feed them kids. I'm afraid that he's gonna take 4 or 5 old vans and put them together and put a damn wooden ramp in it. And Destinee deserves it, she is a wonderful and intelligent young lady with math skills beyond anything that most of us can comprehend. I'm sure she could probably help some of y'all with your bookkeeping now. So tell somebody to tell somebody. They need that break, the doctors said they couldn't do anything else. So she took matters into her own hands, locked them into HIS hands and now her new journey begins. Peace, appreciate your time to read this.

Yesterday we introduced you to Uncle Herm of and now it’s time to introduce you to Brewster’s Banana Pudding!! 🍌😍🍌😍🍌

Brewster’s Banana Pudding is a take on Herman’s favorite donut he created at his shop in Detroit. 🌟This hand-cut gem starts with a fluffy cake donut stuffed full of fresh banana, vanilla wafers, and nutmeg. 🍌 It’s topped with a creamy, dreamy glaze made with rice milk, fresh bananas, and pure vanilla bean paste, then finished with a chocolate ganache drizzle.😍 AND you can find it in Portland and LA shops starting National Donut Day (June 3rd). But only for a week so don’t 😴 on this one!

When he had his shop, Herm always pulled inspiration from the Detroit community, music industry, and culture to build his flavor profiles and sprinkle in a history lesson. ✨📕 He named his banana pudding donut to bring awareness to the history of the Brewster-Douglass housing project in Detroit which is celebrated as the home of the Supremes’ Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Diana Ross as well as Smokey Robinson, Lily Tomlin, Loni Love, and Etterlene DeBarge. 🎶❤️

At Herman’s request, this year we will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Brewster’s Banana Pudding to the of Detroit. UMA is on a mission to help build the next generation of electronic music artists and bring originality, quality, and diversity back to the forefront of the industry. 🎶⭐️

National Donut Day is FRIDAY! 🎉🍩⭐️😆 (June 3rd) And this year we’re celebrating an extra-special collaboration.

Back in 2014, two years into Blue Star’s life, we received an email from a man planning a donut tour to research for the opening of his dream donut shop. 👆That man was Herman Hayes (a.k.a. Uncle Herm) - uncle of the late J Dilla. He was opening a 🍩 shop to honor Dilla’s legacy in Detroit. J Dilla’s album - Donuts - was on heavy rotation in the Blue Star shop at that time, and we were a little starstruck. 🤩

We’ve stayed in touch over the years. Unfortunately, just last year, Herman had to close due to the impacts of the pandemic. When he decided he wanted to come to Portland we were all on board! 💖

So this National Donut Day We’re celebrating our friend with a ✨DELICIOUS✨collaboration. YES there will be a limited edition donut (ANNOUNCING TOMORROW!) YES there will be a donut party going down at our HQ on SW Jefferson on Friday (hosted by Herm on the turntables)🎧🔊🎶.
