Thank you to everyone who came to our Grand Reopening last weekend! It was great to see everyone back at DBGC! Special "thanks" to Supervisor Hilda Solis for helping welcome everyone back to Diamond Bar Golf Course.

How Dr. George F. Grant went from African American dentist to golf tee inventor

The next time you reach into your pocket or the zippered lining of your golf bag for a wooden tee, think of Dr. George F. Grant, an African American dentist from Boston.

Yes, the ancient practice of preparing a pinched mound of damp sand to elevate a golf ball was trampled without fanfare thanks to Dr. Grant.

Born in 1847 in Oswego, New York, Grant gained entrance into Harvard Dental School, the first university-based dental program in the nation. In 1870, Grant graduated with honors, the second African American to earn a degree in dentistry.

He was hired by Harvard Dental School in mechanical dentistry. His inventive skills took over and he developed inserts for patients with cleft palates. Grant developed a love for golf, first at Franklin Park just outside Boston, the second public course in the country. His daughter, Frances, also caddied for him on a meadow course that Grant built next to his country home in Arlington Heights.

On Dec. 12, 1899, Dr. Grant received a U.S. patent No. 638,920, the world’s first patent for a golf tee – a wooden spike with a flexible rubber peg for the ball.

In 1991, the United States Golf Association recognized Dr. Grant as the original inventor of the wooden tee.

It’s always enjoyable to take a quick drive to see the progress being made at Diamond Bar Golf Course by the team. Here’s a couple of quick pics of Hole 1 green ready for seed and a pic of the new and improved Hole 2.

This is what you call a light at the end of the tunnel.

Hole 1 tee box was sodded this week.

Hole 10 tee box was sodded this week.

Hole 18 green was seeded this week.

Not pictured…many holes were seeded or sodded in the last few days, so Diamond Bar Golf Course is working towards a completion of our improvements.

Also, in case you forgot, when we reopen, we will resume our banquets and events business. In preparation for the event later this week, we brought the chairs and tables out of storage.

Just a few quick pics of the continued renovation at Diamond Bar Golf Course. Great work is being done by everyone involved and I’m confident that you will all enjoy your golf course when we are done.

The gentleman on the right is Fidel Guzman. Fidel has worked for American Golf Corporation for 35 years. Fidel has worked his way from starting as a greenskeeper, to a mechanic, to a foreman and is currently an assistant superintendent and doing a great job at Diamond Bar Golf Course. That’s great and all but to me, one of the most impressive things about Fidel is his desire to teach the rest of his team how to reach higher and how to do more. Even after 35 years, he’s always smiling and always looking for something to teach his team.

Someday the guy on the left might become a great superintendent and one of the reasons will be because of the 12 months he spent working with Fidel.

One of the newest additions to come along with our renovations of Diamond Bar Golf Course is a short game practice green where the old #9 green used to be that will include a wonderful practice bunker.

The new #3 green, which used to play as hole #9 is getting ready for grass and looks like a much more enjoyable green to attack over that water.

Hole #1 tee box is also ready for grassing and finally, the tee box for hole #10 is ready as well.

As you can see, some holes will be considerably different and some will get a few tweaks here and there, but more importantly each hole gets a new tee boxes and greens. It’s truly very exciting to see these great changes that are happening to your golf course.

They may seem like little things, but getting the little things done gets us closer to reopening Diamond Bar Golf Course for everyone to enjoy.

First pic is the finish shaping of the new #3 green, which used to play as #9.

Second pic is the base going down on #10 green in preparation for installing the new grass.

Third pic is the west side of the new tunnel from #9 to #10.

And lastly, our wonderful new maintenance building keeps getting closer and closer to completion.

All of these are just a few of the wonderful improvements being made to your golf course and we really are excited to once the work is complete.

Really love the look of the new carpet and paint in the pro shop, bar and cafe. We are getting closer to welcoming our guests back to see all of the wonderful improvements made to our golf course and clubhouse.
