A fight at Hunter Park on April 15 illustrates exactly why parenting classes are essential, said Police Chief Dr. Gary Sparks. The problem is that those who need them the most are usually the ones who are least likely to attend, he said.

Case in point: Quantisha Wilson, a Douglasville mother, threatened a 15-year-old female with whom her 15-year-old daughter had fought at the park that day.

“As parents, we want our kids to be safe, but some parents respond by using the wrong form of instruction,” Sparks said.

Douglasville Police responded to Hunter Park the next day to open investigation of the fight, which was witnessed by a 7-year-old, Detective Coylee Danley reported.

The investigation by the Special Operations team led to the discovery of a video from the park and confirmed the identities of Wilson and her daughter, a middle-school student in the county.

In the video, which was posted to Instagram, Wilson instructed the other female to apologize to her daughter and to say that she was afraid to fight her, or she was going to allow her daughter to beat the girl up again.

Later that night, Wilson and her daughter ranted on Instagram Live for over two hours, where Wilson continued to threaten the other female. At one point, Wilson stated, “I will fight a child,” Danley said.

The Instagram Live message went directly to 150 middle-school students, he added. Wilson later attempted to delete the video, but it had already been downloaded by Special Operations investigators.

“These are some of the issues we see regularly that are caused by unresolved conflict,” Sparks said. “Youth violence, disruptions at home, lack of positive parental guidance, and intervention. All of this leads to our community being unsafe because we have a parenting issue.”

For her actions, Wilson was charged with one count of misdemeanor terrorist threat; three counts of felony terroristic threats; one count of felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor; one count of felony cruelty to children; simple battery/party to a crime; and disorderly conduct.

Since the Douglasville Police Department began offering parenting classes three months ago, parental participation has been weak, at best. It could be that parents work in the evenings and cannot attend; it could be that they believe they know what is best for their children. That may or may not be true.

Our next parenting class is May 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Douglasville Public Safety Complex, located at 2083 Fairburn Road. For more information, please visit our page or contact Sgt. Shannon Dean, community outreach coordinator, at [email protected]

“Whatever the reason, parents should be aware of the law and know that there are consequences to their actions, as well as their children’s,” Sparks said.

I don’t know what parent/guardian needs to hear this, but in 4th grade I took ~The Test~ to see if I could join the accelerated classes (aka “the smart kid classes”).

I failed.

One of the questions I missed -> I didn’t know the difference between a microscope and a telescope.

I remember crying in that test room because I felt so nervous and embarrassed.

I never did test into the smart kid classes. I had a teacher even suggest I wouldn’t be a good fit for Honors Science in high school.

Anyway, I ended up earning a Masters of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.

No single test defines your child. I kept trying and I kept pushing because I had parents who believed in me. They weren’t scientists or engineers themselves but they believed I could do whatever I set my mind to.

Love your child - make them know that YOU believe they are smart and capable (even when a silly test suggests otherwise). Everything else will fall into place. ❤️

Children born with depressants in their system will likely struggle with age-related development and emotional regulation due to the impact of these substances on their brain-body.

This doesn’t mean they can’t heal or improve over time. But it will be challenging, and it will require an adult who understands where the behaviors are coming from.

Knowing a child was exposed to substances in utero means we can be patient and empathetic instead of punitive and coercive.

They didn’t choose to be exposed, and they aren’t choosing the behavior that is a result of the exposure.

REAL LIFE EXAMPLE: damage to the brain from depressants and other trauma can look like a child who is not listening, can’t follow directions, won’t sit still, and forgets to do their homework all the time.

Likely diagnosis - ADHD.

Babies hold implicit memories in their nervous system and body even if they can’t visually or verbally remember what happened with a narrative story.

Examples of early childhood trauma:

Traumatic birth experiences

Separation from biological parents

Domestic abuse

Emotional neglect

Lack of caretaking

Natural disasters

Accidents / injuries

Surgery

Divorce

And many others.

When we acknowledge the trauma that happens in early childhood, we can initiate the healing process and support children through recovery.

Don’t gloss over it. Perhaps that’s easier for the adults in the short term, but it invalidates and retraumatizes the child.

How can healing occur if the trauma and loss is not acknowledged?
