This week, we had the pleasure of having our newest trainees participate in Basic Life Support (BLS) training with Aundrea Morris, our Douglas County E-911 Supervisor and a Certified BLS Instructor through the American Heart Association. Aundrea led an engaging, hands-on session that equipped our staff with essential lifesaving skills. The training covered CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants, as well as, how to effectively use an AED, and handle choking emergencies for all age groups.

On Tuesday, our Director, Katrina Harley, along with other members of our staff, participated in a tabletop exercise organized by Douglas County Emergency Management Director, James Queen. The exercise was a valuable opportunity to simulate a coordinated response to a large-scale incident, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen collaboration.
The event was well-attended by representatives from Douglas County and Douglasville departments, as well as the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services (Hazmat), Cobb County Emergency Management, Wellstar Douglas Medical Center, Georgia Department of Public Safety, Georgia Department of Transportation, American Red Cross, Paulding County Emergency Management, Rockdale County Emergency Management, and more.
Thank you to Director Queen for leading such a collaborative and insightful gathering!

Logan's Law is named after a teen with autism and other special needs. Under the law, each county in Georgia can have its own database (often referred to as Logan's List) that includes information about people in the home with any special conditions or needs so that public safety personnel can respond more appropriately. The list includes those with physical, mental, or neurological conditions.
This feature will help us identify any triggers that may be overwhelming to a person, assist first responders in knowing who or what they need to look for, and will ensure that the units responding do so with more knowledge and compassion of an individual's special needs on scene.
This information is for emergency personnel only, and you will not have to worry about it being shared with others.

Seeing your beloved cat in a tree can surely be scary! We sympathize with you. However, it is not a reason to dial 9-1-1. In the case of a true emergency, such as a bank robber running away, we need our emergency lines open and available to dispatch law enforcement as quickly as possible. Seconds matter.
. . . . . . . .
We know that accidental calls will happen, and your first instinct may be to quickly disconnect the call, but WAIT! Stay on the line, and answer a couple quick questions from the operator. If you disconnect before speaking with us, we will attempt to dial your number back to check on you. Our job is to ensure that you are not in an emergency situation.

Please be aware of this significant closure. Plan an alternate route if you need I20.
Did you know that your old phone that turns on, but doesn't have cell phone service can still dial 9-1-1? While this can be beneficial to someone in an emergency, that old cell phone is often given to a child as a toy. Every day, our agency and agencies across the country receive numerous calls from children playing on phones that their guardians thought to have been a "play phone" and a "pretend conversation" when that child is conversing with us!
Please keep this in mind the next time you have an old phone lying around and are considering giving it to a small child. We want our telecommunication officers to be fully available to answer true emergency calls from our citizens and visitors of Douglas County.

Please be aware of the road closure shared by DCFD!
π¨ Attention all commuters! π¨
An overturned 18-wheeler on Thornton Road and Switch Way is causing some major traffic issues. Roadways are blocked, so expect some delays .
Take alternate routes if possible and drive safe!
TIP TUESDAY!
Have you ever wondered whether to call 9-1-1? Since 9-1-1 is for emergencies only, it helps to understand when to call and when not to call. An emergency is any serious situation where a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical help is needed right away. If you are unsure of whether your situation is an emergency, go ahead and call 9-1-1. The 9-1-1 call taker can determine if you need emergency assistance and can route you to the correct location.
