Brooke Morris said she “finds immense joy in teaching because it allows her to forge meaningful connections” with her students. Morris, who has been an educator for 10 years, teaches the Early Childhood Education and Teaching as a Profession pathways at Alexander High School. She also serves as the cheerleading coach at AHS.

Morris earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of West Georgia. She is also certified to teach family and consumer sciences education for grades 6-12. She is currently working on her master’s degree in workforce education at the University of Georgia.

Morris calls teaching a “reciprocal exchange” where she not only imparts her knowledge but also learns from her students.

“Their unique perspectives, experiences, and personalities enrich my own life, fostering a sense of understanding and mutual respect,” she said. “It's through these interactions that I am constantly reminded of the importance of empathy and compassion. Ultimately, it's the relationships formed in the classroom that drive my passion for teaching, as they embody the essence of connection and shared growth."

Outside of the classroom, Morris cherishes spending time with her family. She loves exploring the beauty of the mountains, enjoying the ambiance of the beach and going on walks and runs. She also loves watching her son play baseball and her daughter participate in gymnastics. She is a huge UGA football fan and attends church, which she said “provides me with spiritual nourishment and a sense of community, grounding me in faith and values that shape my life.”

Pamela Corley recalls a moment that has stuck with her during a long career in education.

It was 8:36 a.m. on a morning in 2008 and she was in her second year at Chestnut Log Middle School, where she is the 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year. A student was laying face down at the top of the eighth grade hallway. CLMS was the first school in Georgia to use an Automated External Defibrillator.

“Assistant Principal Greg Williams and Coach Brad Jackson rushed to the student to start CPR, and I began directing other students to their classrooms and closing hallway doors to create privacy for the miracle that would soon change my pedagogical priorities to revitalize their heart's motivation,” she said. “The next 10 seconds would simultaneously challenge what it means to be an exceptional teacher.”

Days later she was featured on the front page of the Douglas County Sentinel for helping save the student’s life.

Today, Corley is an AED/CPR certified P.E. coach, a 15-year head track coach, 14 year ASP 21st Century instructor,10-year department chair, Mary Corley Educational Scholarship founder, W.A.R Fitness creator, Relationship Goals Mentor Program president, Georgia Southern University (BS Health & Kinesiology) and Strayer University (MA Leadership) alumni, two-time Teacher of the Year recipient, author, traveler, avid reader, manager and mother.

“If the mediocre teacher tells, but the good teacher explains and the great teacher demonstrates; what does the exceptional teacher do?” she asks.

“Exceptional teachers are like an A.E.D,” she said. “They are readily available when you call for them, they save precious lives and they inspire the hearts of students to continue in life's perfect rhythm. The reward for accepting a role as an exceptional teacher was that he lived.”
