Intermittent Fasting for the Right Weight Loss Candidate
Marie L. Veselsky RD, LD, CDE, BC-ADM
Historians believe our ancient ancestors practiced intermittent fasting naturally, as food sources and daylight were limited. Our earliest ancestors did not have a refrigerator or cupboard to open in the morning to get their food. They probably had to get up and move and look for a food source.
Animal studies suggest intermittent fasting can reduce the risk of metabolic diseases and obesity. Our bodies utilize sugar first for energy, storing the excess as glycogen in the liver and muscles as fat. Intermittent fasting encourages the body to burn up more fat cells for fuel.
Somatotropin, the human growth hormone (HGH), is important to many physiological functions, but we produce less of it as we get older. This decrease correlates with symptoms of aging such as lower energy. However, fasting naturally elevates HGH levels. Levels of the hormone rise significantly within 13 hours of fasting.
Intermittent fasting does not necessarily mean you eat one day and the next you do not. Even though there are various types of intermittent fasting diets out there the one that makes the most sense to this Registered Dietitian is the 16:8. This is where you wait about 16 hours between the last meal of the day and the first meal the next day. You are only eating in a window of approximately eight hours per day. During the eight-hour eating window, it is essential to eat enough nutritious whole foods to make feel satiated but not overstuffed.
In addition, you still want to practice reducing or avoiding too much carbohydrate especially processed bready carb and eating more “real food” like lean meats, and fresh fruits or vegetables.
This meal plan is not for everyone including people with diabetes and on insulin. You should always check with your health care provider and and/or your certified diabetes educator (CDE) to see if this meal plan is right for you.
It's best to make an appointment with a licensed Registered Dietitian to learn whether you’re a good candidate for this meal plan. Most private insurance will cover your visit if the Registered Dietitian is contracted with them with no referral typically needed.
Welcome to the 1st day of the rest of your life! 1/08/2023!
If you are having trouble balancing on one foot, why not do calf raises? Training your calves is particularly important to build calf strength, endurance, and explosiveness. It's great for improving ankle stability and overall balance.
Coming soon, we will talk about meal plans for 2023. Intermittent fasting for the right weight loss candidate! Stay tuned!
First, Happy New Year! Second, please check with your doctor before starting any exercise program!
Can you balance on one leg for 10 seconds?
That’s the question researchers asked 1,700 people aged from 51 to 75 years old. This led the researchers to find that good balance is a predictor of both good health and longevity.
Good balance is typically an indication of better physical strength and fitness. Prevention is always better than the cure, so doing simple balancing exercises is a simple way to retain strength, co-ordination, and the ability to move with ease as you age.
Start with the one leg balance exercise. If you have any concerns about falling, you can have one hand on a wall or a sturdy chair or handrail.
It's almost that time but why wait till January 1st, 2023, to start working at reaching your optimal health! How about today?
Need to lose some weight? Want to get to the root cause of your high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugars? Want an individualized exercise program or just want to be healthier in general?
First, buy a calendar and hang it on the wall and once or twice a week write your weight down AND every day you work out or exercise write what you did. I know you can put it on an app, but I think writing it down and the visual is important!
In addition, if you can create a happy place to work out in 2023! Could be a corner in the apartment or house and string some lights.
Stay tuned for exercises, health tips and trademarked meal plans to follow to help you reach your optimal health in 2023.
And yes, come visit us, NH Integrated Health Care LLC, at our Dover or Conway NH office to get your professional health analysis! Most insurance accepted!
Coming soon in 2023!

Spices have been used for centuries not only to give food flavor, but also for their health benefits. This was more so in the past versus modern day society. Nowadays many people may only use spices or herbs at Thanksgiving in their turkey stuffing.
So maybe it is time to “Spice up Your Life and Your Health!”
Start by trying some new recipes at Thanksgiving and Christmas that include several spices or herbs.
National nutrition guidelines stress the importance of consuming a wide variety of food. The healthy nutrition message is now one of increasing food variety and diversity to maximize the range of nutrients consumed on a regular basis. Herbs and spices naturally fit within such programs. Generally, the leaf of a plant used in cooking is referred to as an herb, and any other part of the plant, often dried, as a spice.
Here are a few common spices/herbs and their health benefits:
Rosemary is known as a potent antioxidant. It is anti-inflammatory and neutralizes free radicals in the body. This may give it anti-cancer fighting abilities. Add rosemary, along with your other favorite spices, to your holiday turkey stuffing.
Parsley is rich in many vital vitamins, including Vitamin C, B12, K and A. This means parsley keeps your immune system strong, tones your bones and heals the nervous system, too. Regular use of parsley can help control your blood pressure. Parsley fits in many holiday dishes.
Chives might help your body digest your food better and make use of more nutrient's food offers. Chives work by getting rid of bacteria, yeast and fungi in your intestinal tract so that your entire digestive system works as it should. Mashed potatoes with chives and garlic added is perfect at any holiday meal.
Garlic may improve your heart’s health. Studies suggest that an intake of between half and one clove per day can lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels by an average of 10 percent. One way to increase your garlic intake is to add minced garlic and chopped cucumber to plain yogurt for a light dip or salad dressing.
Cinnamon has been found to help lower blood glucose and may help prevent heart disease. A 2003 study found that about half a teaspoon each day lowered blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Add cinnamon to your holiday pumpkin and apple pies.
The safety of herbs (because they are a food) is very good, but if you take any medications and use a lot of an herb or spice, you should check with your doctor to make sure there are no potential food/drug interactions.

Sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees! Many people think reaching their optimal health is a lot harder than it really is. You need to get to the root of the problem and cut out most of the processed bready carb which is the macronutrient that affects your blood sugars most. This will help you lower your average blood sugar and also help with weight loss!

Recent research shows that weight loss through following an individualized lower carb meal plan can help prevent progression of diabetes type 2 and in some cases, even put people in remission from their diabetes type 2.
Many credentialed health care professionals that believe in a more integrated approach to diabetes and weight loss (through diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes such as stress reduction and medications as needed) routinely recommend carbohydrate intakes below 130 grams a day. According to research, low-carb diets can help stabilize blood sugar levels and facilitate weight loss.
At NH Integrated Health Care’s Choice Center for Diabetes and Weight Loss we know how powerful an integrated therapy approach can be for managing obesity, diabetes and lowering the risk of associated long-term complications.
Since type 2 diabetes is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels caused by impaired insulin sensitivity, it seems intuitive that controlling dietary carbohydrates, the main nutrient that directly influences glycemia would be a logical dietary approach for weight loss, pre-diabetes and a person diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2.
So, what is your individualized carb number for weight loss? We will do an analysis on you using our professional grade scale and assess your individualized carb number for weight loss!
