The CDSLP crew rocked some mismatched socks today in honor of World Down Syndrome Day 💙💛
Why 3/21 you ask??
Read below for some information on the day from the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware…
“Every year on March 21, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. March 21 is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Ds chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks!”

Show us what you have been up to this weekend!
On Monday nights in the summer my son Cooper plays Miracle League Baseball. It’s adaptive baseball for kids and teens with disabilities.
This is his third year.
It’s been life changing for our family.
He doesn’t own a glove. And he uses a blue wiffle ball bat to hit. He uses a tee.
And he typically runs the bases with me or his dad. But lately he’s started running with his friend. And last night his younger brother Sawyer.
This is the hug he gave Sawyer after they crossed home plate last night together.
The photographer caught them at exactly the right moment.
The hug was umprompted. And came seemingly out of nowhere. It took my breath away when it happened. See displays of affection like that aren’t all that common with Cooper. So when we get them…we take note.
Brothers. Two years apart. Both baseball players.
This morning, over breakfast, Sawyer said to me…
‘Last night was the first time I felt like Cooper was my older brother. I loved it mom.’
It’s so much more than a game of baseball. ❤️⚾️
We are officially enjoying the weekend!
Reminder, we will be closed on TUESDAY, JULY 4, 2023 in observance of Independence Day!
Show us your fun fourth festivities!!
Last night a few of us got together to celebrate Ms Coleen as she steps into the next chapter of life. We are going to miss her but hope she gets to enjoy every bit of retirement
Ms Coleen has been an integral part of our company. Her contributions will always be valued and remembered. Her hard work, commitment, and dedication are worthy of admiration. Ms Coleen will be greatly missed and filling her shoes will be an almost impossible task.
On behalf of every one in Central Delaware Speech-Language Pathology, I would like to wish her the best of luck.🧡
Whether you are enjoying a BBQ🌭🍔, hitting the beaches☀️🌊, or going out of state this weekend🚗, take a moment for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice allowing us to enjoy those activities!🇺🇸
A reminder that CDSLP will be closed until 8:00am Tuesday May 30th. Enjoy your holiday!
DID YOU KNOW ???
❤️5% to 10% of Americans may have communication disorders, costing the U.S. approximately $154–186 billion annually.
🧡By the first grade, roughly 5% of children have noticeable speech disorders.
💛3 million+ Americans stutter.
💚Nearly 7% of Americans have some form of language impairment.
💙Approximately 1 million Americans suffer from aphasia.
What are some other things you know about speech and language? Is there anything you want to learn more about!?
Did You Know???
There are over 20,000 nerve/hair cells in the average cochlea; damage to these nerve/hair cells cause hearing loss.
Some medications, such as certain antibiotics and cancer treatments, can be toxic to the hair cells in the cochlea. In addition, some medications can cause the fluid in the cochlea to become thicker, which can also lead to hearing loss.
There are a number of other conditions that can lead to hearing loss, including aging, head injuries, and certain diseases. However, one of the most common causes of hearing loss is exposure to loud noise.
DID YOU KNOW???
The speech language pathology field began growth in the 1920’s as speech pathologists focused on treating soldiers returning from war. Today, throughout America, over 119,000 speech language pathologists work in a variety of fields. You’ll find speech language pathologists in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, schools, early intervention settings, universities and private practices. In 2010, the United States dedicated May 18th as ‘National Speech Pathologist’ day, a day to recognize these incredible individuals.
Here at CDSLP we are fortunate to have some the best SLP’s - their creativity, compassion and commitment to making a difference in your children's lives are just a few characteristics that makes our team so special. Not only do they take time to think of each patient individually, but they constantly seek to grow as individuals, a clinic and as a profession with continued education and research.
So today, celebrate an SLP you work with or you know!

Fun Fact of the day!
Can any of our non-speech friends figure out this phrase?
Speechies learn to write in the International Phonetic Alphabet, which has a character for every single sound found in all of the world’s languages. This helps us to accurately record the exact sounds your child says.
/pɹɪti kul ɹaɪt/
You see what our therapists do while working with your children, but have you wondered what exactly is an SLP?
Here is a quick view into what our SLP's can do!
"Speech and Hearing Awareness is observed in May every year. It’s a month dedicated to raising awareness for communication disorders, helping patients overcome any type of hearing and speech illness, as well as celebrating the contributions of professionals in the Speech-Language-hearing industry. From speech-language pathologists, audiologists, hearing scientists, and other support personnel, we pay them respect for the help they have given, which includes assisting their patients and providing life-altering treatments. This awareness month supports S.L.P. patients and the efforts to eradicate the stigma attached to communication disorders.
(If you see an SLP today, thank them for all of their hard work, it is their month to be recognized!)
Follow along to learn more about the ways you can support and celebrate the cause this May!"

"Increasing public awareness of the benefits of walking is the aim of National Walking Day.🚶♀️
On this day, it is strongly recommended that everyone set aside at least 30 minutes of their day to go for a stroll.🚶 According to the American Heart Association🫀, walking can help lower the risk of developing heart disease and stroke. It also supports maintaining a healthy weight.🚶♂️
In 2007, the American Heart Association🫀 established National Walking Day. It is observed every year on the first Wednesday in April."
