As the manager of the sterile processing department at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Miguel makes sure every instrument is safe and functional before our providers use it in patient care.
Asked why he pursued a career in health care, he said: "Simple. I enjoy helping people." He's constantly learning, and his favorite part of work is seeing his team's skills develop and grow.
For the past 42 years, Jean Lowe, Nurse of the Year at Advocate Sherman Hospital, has touched countless lives, including every patient and family she has served. Her biggest asset is her ability to meaningfully connect with all the patients she comes in contact with.
Jean initiated many improvements and led her department through Advocate Sherman’s Magnet designation and redesignation journey. Her most memorable nursing accomplishment was the site’s first Magnet designation. “I was so proud to be a nurse practicing at a high-level Magnet hospital.”

Advocate Condell Medical Center recently celebrated the opening of their milk depot in partnership with Mothers' Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes. The milk depot offers families a place to donate their excess milk to help babies in need.
Donated human milk is an important part of care for babies in Advocate Health Care’s NICUs and special care nurseries as well as for babies in the postpartum units when parents want to breastfeed their babies, but are struggling with low supply, poor latch, or other challenges. Donated human milk provides numerous health benefits in the absence of the mother’s milk, including infection-fighting factors, active growth and development hormones, improved digestion and ideal nutrition. Milk donations are pasteurized and tested at the Milk Bank WGL’s facility to ensure safety and quality.
Jessica Neumeier of Libertyville donated 700 ounces of frozen excess milk the grand opening event.
“Donating breastmilk is a great way to support other parents. It is convenient for me to donate at the Condell milk depot since I am already coming to the hospital once a week for the parent support group,” shared Neumeier.

As a rescue nurse at Advocate South Suburban Hospital, Lauren Konczal jumps into action when responding to Rapid Response Team events. She remains calm under pressure, displays sound decision-making skills and is attentive to patient needs.
Lauren instituted a meaningful program for patient families called “Heartbeat in a Bottle,” which is a practice of printing a patient’s final electrocardiogram strip and placing it in a medication vial as a memento for families.
Her ultimate inspiration for her career as a nurse came from her grandmother. “Watching her as I grew up, I knew there was nothing else in this world I would want to do. I want to be just like her. I can only hope she is just as proud of me.”

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital recently performed its first tricuspid valve clip repair, a new minimally invasive approach to treating a leaky tricuspid valve.
Also known as tricuspid regurgitation, the condition occurs when the valve between the two right heart chambers doesn’t close properly, allowing blood to flow backward into the right atrium. A leaky tricuspid valve can lead to shortness of breath and cause fluid to collect in the abdomen or legs, often resulting in swelling.
With the tricuspid clip procedure, physicians insert a catheter through a vein in the leg and maneuver up to the heart, where a device is clipped onto the tricuspid valve to reduce the backflow of blood. The first-of-its-kind device recently received FDA approval and is designed specifically for the right side of the heart.
The technique allows the heart to pump blood more efficiently, relieving symptoms and reducing the risk of future heart complications, says interventional cardiologist Dr. Neal Sawlani, who performed the procedure at Advocate Lutheran General – the first in Advocate Health’s Midwest region.
“The tricuspid clip procedure is lower risk and has a shorter recovery time compared to traditional open-heart surgery, which is the only other treatment option for this condition,” Dr. Sawlani says. “It’s a safe, effective alternative for repairing the damaged valve and improving the quality of life for many of these patients.”
Kudos to the Advocate Lutheran General structural heart team for their commitment to advancing innovative, leading-edge cardiac care! Learn more about Advocate's heart and vascular services: https://bit.ly/3trHhoi

42-year-old Stanley Pinkston left Advocate Christ Medical Center today with a new heart – for the second time. His inspiring story marks the 300th heart transplant surgery performed at our Oak Lawn hospital.
Earlier this spring, Stanley received life-saving heart transplant surgery at Advocate Christ. His first was more than 13 years ago in December 2010.
Stanley first came to the hospital after having a stroke in his 20s. He has a family medical history of heart failure. His father passed away from the disease at 28 years old and his grandfather at 32. This makes Stanley especially grateful for his gift of life. He’s inspired to live to the fullest and is looking forward to returning home to his wife and sons in Bronzeville.
